Manually Update to 2.0.1

This is prob a dumb question but... we are operating on Android 2.0....... and our firmware is also 2.0 "before the update"....

So are we updating just our firmware to the phone or Android itself?
My best guess is this is a Android update since screens etc are being changed...

But the phone clearly states the firmware has been updated?

Sorry, I'm new to all this still.

We are updating the firmare to 2.0.1. Not the hardware.

There really is no difference if I am understanding your question.

The 2.0.1 update is an update to the Android OS which is in OUR phones.

seems even though it claims to have failed.. it worked.. hope that doesnt mean it didnt complete the upgrade.

Still hasnt fixed my dang no 3G icon problem..

What happened to the "edit" button for this thread?

I forgot to mention in my last post about my successful update:

My camera is working MUCH snappier now! Green line focus is almost instant! Pictures now do justice to the 5 megapixels! Awesome!

Also, when a phone call is disconnected now, my screen reverts back to the home screen. Before the update it would always revert to the call log screen. Much better!

At first I didnt have the Verizon tab but it has since replaced itself? Figure there is some type of web based updating going on behind the scenes for those of us manually installing from google. Everything seems to be working just fine. Browsing seems a little clunky though.

I hate to say it, I'm a computer guru, and had flashed my V3, and V9 many times, fooled with flexes as well, but I think after throwing $$$ to get the droid and my wife's LG Chocolate touch, I'm just hesitant about something that in my mind I know is a simple process ...

Seems to me that one could conceivably incurr the same issues encountered by either doing the manual update, or the OTA. Only way to tell would be for someone to do a comparison from an update file pushed and the one's currently available. My guess is that they're the same, just that no EU intervention is required as deeply for the OTA.

So count it as me having a bit of a confidence issue with my new friend at the moment, I'll wait for the OTA, but Damn! I'm soooooooooo tempted. Maybe if I don't see it by Friday noon ... :)

THREAD REDIRECTION FOR A MOMENT:
Question on the programming (*228 option #2 and so forth), do we have a sticky on just what this does for us, etc. ? I updated my roaming settings now, even though I didn't update, any benefit? Can any options in there kill an activation? I believe this would make a good sticky for everyone from a guru versed in it.

I RETURN YOU TO THE OP THREAD, THANKS. :)

Reinstall it Heem, several people ran into that last night. A second install worked. If you dont, something (think its called the baseboard) lists the wrong info.

That works for all phones, it just lets your phone know the closest towers.

Really, so the Not call log app is not necessary then? Hmm, I'm going to check on this.

To the people with the Downloads tab, where did you get your update from?

I got mine DIRECTLY from the Google website and I still have the Verizon tab. I even cleared the cache of the Market application and still the tab is there.
I just now downloaded the zip file from here and ran the process. Rebooted, #228/#2 and rebooted again. All is well.

I have the download tab - VZW is now gone. Have rebooted 3 times (shift/alt/del) and no change - download tab. So - I guess that's how they want it now? Can anyone that was pushed the update confirm whether they have the Verizon or Download tab?

I don't like the lock button, took me 2 swipes to open. Still used to sweeping in an arc. That's a reflex action that will go away after normal use.

I don't see any speed boosts on apps opening - pulling down notification bar is jerky where before it was smooth. Sweeping home screen left or right seems about the same.

What I did notice a dramatic difference in is scrolling up or down. My screen was very sensitive before, it was difficult scrolling without opening an app. Now it works like a charm. No accidental apps opening. I like this!

Maps are quicker at redrawing. I see a full screen map instantly now instead of seeing pieces of the map as they load.

Deleting mail on secondary accounts (optimium email) takes 15 seconds now or more - before they were gone in a blink. Hmmm.

I'll work through the day and see what effect if any on my daily apps used (Docs to Go being the most important).

Up to date with 2.01 - mikey
had "downloaded" tab for a while, then Market locked up, restarted and came back with the "Verizon" tab

I had the downloads tab also and was browsing around and checked again and voila, verizon tab was back.... what a tease.
