Ran the update and it worked like a charm........ Thanx for whoever made it available to us and for those of you that are still having problems, make sure you name the file update and not update.zip...... Once I made that change it worked as promised!
Nothing has changed.... if your file browser does "not" show extensions, then don't add one... "because its already there, you just can't see it because you have your browser set to "not" see them".. if you add one, you will have two extensions of .zip and the install will not see the file as its only looking for a update.zip.... not a update.zip.zip
Remember.. just because you can't see the extension.. its really there and the install process sees it too.
No one is changing the rules of how to install.... its just that people are messing with thier files and can't see the extensions "a very bad practice because if the extension gets altered, that determines which app tries to utilize it"
you shouldn't be downloading this directly to your phone (if you can help it). download it to your PC and copy it to your SD card.
if you need to download it to your phone, you don't need to install additional apps. just turn off the "allow unknown sources" in the application settings in the main settings screen. be sure to turn if off again after done.
To the people with the Downloads tab, where did you get your update from?
I got mine DIRECTLY from the Google website and I still have the Verizon tab. I even cleared the cache of the Market application and still the tab is there.
Ok. I don't think I've seen this one discussed. As far as I know I'm following the instructions perfectly. I named it update.zip and not update.zip.zip, I've downloaded the file from different links and different browsers and have tried it from the computer and all on the phone, but I get the same thing every time. Here's what I get:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check("MTD:boot:[tons of letters and numbers]")
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

Got my update from the Google site. The OP's instructions worked perfect and my phone is now updated.
Scrolling through webpages is much jerkier, that bugs me. I also still have the Verizon tab in the market, no download tab. Haven't done much else with the phone. Are there "patch notes" somewhere out there that list the major changes this updated made?
Well updated mine with this update and so far so good
couple seconds quicker on camera
browsing is just fine very fast and smooth
also have downloads tab in market app??? not biggie all them apps were in reg section
works great with home++ very smooth
have to wait and see about battery life........
facebook worked good, will wait and see about updates etc
gps did turn off after closed maps, very nice so dont drain battery if you forget too
