Motorola Droid Bionic Joins the Droid Family!

It's pretty obvious they split the RAM up to run the 2 OS's it just stands to reason

Depends on the usage of the other system. I have boxes with dual or tri boots with different OS for testing and they are not equally split in terms of ram.

I will concede that in terms of ease of manufactor and set up that it makes sense to split it down the middle that may not be the case and many are running rampant spreading this as fact.

The phone could just as easily dictate 256 MB of ram to the dock OS and the other 768mb to the phone OS.

This isn't dual booting. This is both OSes running at the same time at all times.

Call me 12 hours or so behind then.

Nonetheless none of those state that the other 512 is dedicated solely to the dock OS...

Of course you are right on that account, but the docking application is ALWAYS running so it's ready to go for the instant on feature when it docks. It's living in RAM. how much RAM, no one really will know until live ones get out in the world, but there is RAM usage, probably large RAM usage.

Reading through these forums the last couple days I have come to conclude some people just cannot be pleased ever. Yes, the Atrix is a sweet phone. Nope, it's not currently available for VZW (although it may be). For those who have to be able to use their smartphone as a netbook, AT&T is currently the only option. For the rest of the users who do not need to use their smartphone as a netbook, the Bionic is better in every spec sans total RAM (and we honestly have no idea how much RAM will be needed).

One thing I am pretty certain of though is that at some point people will figure out how to install more programs on the Desktop OS side of the Atrix and as soon as they do, everyone will be complaining about the lack of RAM in the Atrix. Load a few full fledged Linux apps up on the Atrix, keep Android running as it needs to and RAM starvation will ensue quite rapidly.

I'd note though that the Atrix's "4G" is HSPA+ and not LTE. At least I've not seen LTE used in conjunction with Atrix.

I would not say many of us are never pleased but are more likely always excited and eager for the next best thing!!! We are on Android as an example of that. I am fine with the Bionic and imagine it will be my next phone though I do need to see the costs of 4G when they fully release everythign and what all it will do to my plan with the wife staying non 4G...

So do you guys think this will be the most popular 4g phone? Biggest user base with hackers and customization?

First off it's not a Dual boot, secondly why allocate 768 to one OS (when 512 is more than enough) and only 256 to the other. 256 to run Linux? Webtop/Linux doesn't exactly look like it doesn't have a memory demand. It's pretty intensive with what it can do.

I thought about it last night. With the Android phone OS still running while also using webtop mode, its logical to think they split the Ram between the 2.

Its like running VMWare. (I dont know how other VM software works with Ram)

For those that never used VMWare, when creating the virtual machine you have to assign a specific amount of Ram from what you have installed on the PC. With the phone powering it, and we are not doing the assigning of the Ram, its logical if they just split the Ram between the 2 OS's.

And I thought last night about the updating challenges the Atrix might face with updating that Linux OS. That could wind up being some mighty big updates as far as file size.

But, with VMware when not using the virtual machine its not using the Ram you assigned it. If webtop starts up when the phone starts, then I would say its a good guess the Ram is already assigned on phone start up.

Whatever the case is.....the Bionic is no slouch...lol

Yeah, I'm def gonna get the bionic... any word on dates yet? I've been saving my upgrade for like 5 months now... I am thinking of getting the xoom on launch (valentines day?) But if the bionic is coming around that time i'd rather get that ...

How on earth can anyone be disappointed in the Bionic? I say that sincerely. Has anyone taken the time to actually look at the specs on this handset?

Its a letdown because of no docking capabilities? Its a let down because it has ddr2 memory, a Tegra 2 processor and a high res 4.3" screen? The Bionic has the best hardware of any device coming to Market. Help me understand the rationale of being disappointed.

1) I wanted a 4" screen not a 4.3".
2) 512mb of ram
3) Blur
4) 2.2 at launch

The screen thing isn't that big of a deal. The ram thing is. So maybe the Atrix actually can only access the other 512 when it's using the dock mode. If that's the case then it doesn't have enough ram either. While the dock modes are nice, I don't have to have them. Just think about it though, now that we have dual core processors more and more applications will probably be able to make use of both the processors and more ram. I know we might not necessarily need it now but I would like to have room to grow. Blur is going to using up some of that ram too and I don't even use any of it so I'll already be down at least a couple of MBs. You also have to think about future OS upgrades, I want to have enough to run those comfortably. To me, 512 just isn't enough. I have plenty of other electronics that I'm satisfied with, so I'm not one of those nothing is ever good enough people. I just think they could have done better. None of the other phones they announced were that great either, so I guess I really have no choice but to get this one. It doesn't mean that I have to be happy about it though. I'm definitely only signing a one year contract though so I can upgrade to something else later. Of course this was probably there plan all along....

I wonder if I wait long enough and my dx has an "accident" if I could snag a bionic through insurance. Hmmmm......

Why is 512 not enough? What Android phone out there has more than 512MB devoted to Android (please do not quote the Atrix as we have no clue how the RAM is divided)

Sure you have other choices. Don't buy any of them.

If the Atrix is what you are looking for, wait for the VZW version. It will be out, just not on the same day as the Bionic. Otherwise, go get the Atrix. AT&T isn't as good as VZW imo, but they are not bad. HPSA+ while not LTE isn't a bad technology either. The speeds seem decent enough.

^Did you not read the rest of my post? I didn't say any phone out there had it. Plus I said if the Atrix has it divided up to where the rest of the phone can't use it, then IMO it doesn't have enough either. Yeah, one choice is to not get anything else, but my OG Droid is starting to show its age. It doesn't have enough space or ram.
