Motorola Droid Bionic Joins the Droid Family!

Why is 512 not enough?

The Thunderbolt has 768ram....It's rom was supposedly leaked and it weighs in at just over 500megs. Some of that's on the SD card but it should be pretty obvious 512 will be inadequate very soon.

There's nothing that prevented all these phones from getting 768 or 1gig, none. But the mfrs want you to have to upgrade again next year as Android continues to grow and apps get beefier for the dual cores.

Perhaps I am just so used to living with the D1's 256MB RAM that 512 seems like a lot.

You are of course right in the desire to keep pushing upgrades. Honestly 2GB could be standard on phones.

OT, I am not sure how much the extra RAM would shorten battery life, probably not much though.

4.3" qHD screen + lighter version of Blur + possible unlocked bootloader + "Droid" branding + Tegra 2 + 8MP camera + HDMI + large battery = giving this phone a chance. What's not to like aside from the 512 vs. 1 gig issue? Is that really a deal-breaker for people? Where's the love for dual-core finally arriving? Also, I could care less about a computer docking station. I don't get it, why would anyone need to hook their smartphone up to use on their computer, just use the computer if you're already carrying it around!

Also, it appears that the LG Revolution might be "Binged," so the Bionic just leapfrogged over it to the top of my list, followed by the Thunderbolt. Looks like its a race to release date now.

The 512MB of ram is DDR2 though, which the thunderbolt doesn't have. That sort of equalizes it.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too... do the other phones have slower ram? If that be the case less ddr2 is much better and either way the extra core more than makes up for it...

WTB 2.3 and keyboard. Also the Atrix has more ram =0(

Where are you getting 2.3 from? AT&T's site says 2.2.

WTB = Want to buy

Yeah Android 2.2 is like a year old now. They needa step it up to 2.3 and get ready for Honeycomb.

Just to add another un-needed, wild speculation, about the Atrix.

What if someone found a way to crack it open and delete the other partiton? Any chance that the phone partition would have access to the full Gig of RAM?

<<<doesn't care about the Atrix since its going to AT&T

this is the Bionic forum...take the Atrix talk to another forum plz

kthxbye

Don't see why not, and it would seem a definite possibility, unless there's something in the phone architecture that prevents the joining of potentially 2 512 chips into 1gig.

Of course, the rom would probably need some special coding to take advantage.

The more I think about this phone, the more risk of failure I see. Updating and maintaining two OS's seems like a daunting challenge, and if the Android updates are slower or non-existent it kills what could emerge as a significant brand on AT&T.

Not to mention, aside from how much the dock will cost, how can it be much more than an novelty when AT&T caps you at 2gigs? That will burn A LOT of data with full PC browser rendering.

Seems like a pretty risky proposition. When you push the envelope that much you better get it right

If by "like a year old" you mean barely six months, yes you are correct. The Nexus One started getting 2.2 in the late June early July time frame. The rest of the Android community started getting Froyo officially in September - not even yet.

Actually 512 ddr2 could be better in a lot of ways. Similar to having your harddrives raided, you have half as much space but it processes TWICE as fast. So, I'm going to have to disagree on the point "it's still just 512"... at least when comparing it to 1gig of non ddr2... which we aren't even clear of weather or not you can use it all (without modding)... I personally am looking forward to how fast this thing could potentially be.

Stepping up the processor without stepping up the ram just seems wrong... what came first? Dual core processor or ddr2 ram? (Rhetorical question) seems like they should have had it FIRST lol
