Motorola Droid Bionic Joins the Droid Family!

For me, the bootloader doesn't matter. I have a X now with a locked bootloader, and I am rooted, I can overclock, use roms, and themes. All of the extra stuff doesn't matter. What matters to me is my phone's specs, build quality, reception, and battery life.

I'd like to expand on your comments Brian. I used to be in the camp on locked bootloader = no go but with these new devices the hardware far exceeds my "need" to theme and ROM an Android device. I'll just grab me ADW with Koveleski's Dark Edge theme and I'll be good to go. Overclocking holds no interest for me neither after I have my hands on the Nvidia Tegra 2 Bionic. Overclock? What for? : )

With the Tegra Zone all the games will be optimized to run on my little processor. That architecture will be plenty cutting edge to everything I need the device to do and more. Overclocking in my opinion will be a thing of the past. There comes a point when it becomes overkill and I think with these new processors we have reached that point.

Anyhow, customization is great (custom ROMs) no doubt but I can't pass up superb hardware for an unlocked bootloader on a device I'm not to fond of.

Give me a GREAT handset with a locked bootloader and I'm one happy camper. Things and times change. We are entering a whole new era with these new Android devices and it is only going to get better from here.

Sadly I do see the modding community eventually fizzling out as more manufactures lock down their devices.

Debating between this and the Thunderbolt. The Bionic appeals more to me though, especially since I've never had a HTC phone. First phone was the Droid 1 :D

Here is a question. If the bootloader is locked, would you all look around at other phones? The LG Optimus 2x perhaps? If the specs are pretty close, would an unlocked bootloader help make your decision to go with one phone over another?

You will care when motorola and verizon decide its time for you to buy a new phone (history shows usually 1 year after release). The roms you are seeing on the dx are just themes. They are not roms. Roms will never be possible on the dx.

I'm on Gummy Jar 2.5 right now, an AOSP rom w/ no blur, rooted and overclocked. You can definitely run roms on the DX.

I'm in CK's camp that the need to overclock will be a thing of the past.

I look at it like I did PC's. Used to always overclock the processor, but having purchased a quad-core a while back that desire went away... my machine screams already, why push it?

I am still going to get this phone... I am not going to root my phone so it doesn't matter to me if it is locked or not!!!!

I totally agree. I never did it before anyway, but overclocking is starting to seem pointless. I would still like the ability to remove things like Twitter, Google Googles, Facebook, and the like however.....

I think custom kernels is a HUGE advantage android platform has over iphone. On one side I've had my OG droid which can get better quadrant scores than any stock android phone (not including ones that aren't on the list yet), and on the other hand you have apple where people pretty much buy a new phone every time a new iphone comes out, and if you don't the new os slows your old device down and makes it SUCK hahaha I even think some lady sued apple over that (I'm sure she lost but its still hilARIOUS). Not to mention at least setting up the overclocking tool will save you a crapload of battery life ;)

Come on people! How are you NOT going to take full advantage of your phone, of course depending which one it is you might have issues OCing, but android is ALL ABOUT that beautiful linux open source do whatever the heck you want/can to make the most out of what you have!

I overclock a little on my Incredible. Currently at 1075 mhz. But nothing crazy. When you have dual-core now coming out, I agree, there won't be a need.

BUT there will be a need for those custom kernels! Developers can make your phone so much snappier with their kernels, along with improving the battery life further (even though it sounds like the Bionic will have tremendous battery life already). The Bionic (with unfinished software) ran a quadrant score of 2284, with finished software it'll probably be in the range of 2800-3000. With an amazing custom kernel, it'll be almost 4000 for sure. Just little things like that will help in the kernel area.

One thing I will want with root still though...STOCK! I'll want stock android with no blur eventually. It's just too nice to not have. Which is why I root, and I can't wait to see what ROMs come for the Bionic.

But this will DEFINITELY be my next device, no matter what the bootloader situation is!

Dang not being able to edit haha, its not entirely the actual overclocking that makes you go way faster BUT IT IS the custom roms and kernels. Even if you leave it @ stock speed (personally I prefer 800lv to combine spears and rediculous battery life) at least do some major tweakage! :P

That's simply having root access. SetCPU would still be wonderful for underclocking the CPU when not in use in order to conserve battery life. In the beginning that's all I did with my wife's Droid Incredible. Root and add SetCPU. It doubled her battery life.

The one thing I would miss though is not being at the mercy of the manufacturer for software updates. Droid doesn't look like it'll be getting Android 2.3 at all unless you run a custom ROM. Look at all those poor Sony Xperia people. Not even getting Android 2.2. That I would miss terribly if the Bionic has a locked bootloader.

I agree. I'm already running GB on my D1, and it's hard for me to imagine that samsung people don't even have Froyo yet....that's just pathetic.

But as we all know, VZW is notorious for not supporting their phones past a year (if you're lucky...more like 6-8 months), so it is going to suck if the Bionic is locked...I'm still holding out hope that it won't be, but really there is not really any reason I can think of that Moto would unlock it...

Motorola Droid Bionic Quadrant testing shows some impressive numbers

What happens when you pile a bunch of people into a room and tell them to play with a just-announced Android device? Some folks will play with it and then quickly move along while others, will be bound and determined to test it out to the max and see what kind of limits can be reached.
The Motorola Droid Bionic shown above got put through its paces when tested via Quadrant installed on it sometime before or after our own hands on with it. While the Quadrant test isn't exactly the be all, end all of testing, the Droid Bionic did give off an impressive score of 2284 without Quadrant even being optimized as of yet to run on the device. You can hit the break and see a video of it running the test yourself. Thanks, lsramair, for sending this in!

I pretty much agree with CK. Yes I OC my D1, but at stock speeds it can feel a bit sluggish. A T2 chip at 1GHz each should alleviate that issue. As long as I can root to remove crapware, and use SetCPU to underclock when the screen is off, I am fairly happy. Adding something like a CM or GEM based ROM so I can get the Galaxy S style pull down notifications and I cannot think of anything else I need for now.
