Posted this about three pages back and was told not to post Milestone stuff in Droid section

Please keep the focus on the subject of the Motorola Droid 2.1. tehpriest has already made a thread in the the Milestone part of the forum for discussion of 2.1. Kindly take take conversation of Milestone to that section of the forum.

this is getting annoying. Idk wth is wrong with these guys. If anything, it looks bad.
Leaked doc, leaked this and that, and then pull the info once the ETA arrives. It stupid and i hope they realize how bad they look. regardless how great the Moto Droid is, its mad annoying when they do this. This is the 2nd time they did it, if not the 3rd.

I think what everyone is missing is the fact that the update is ready to, and was ready last Thursday, and was held up to due to Bitfone's capacity issues. I have not seen anything that refutes that yet. CK posted an article in the other 2.1 forum that stated that Bitfone was hiring a 3rd party consultant to advise them on how to fix the capacity issue..... If that is the case, then we are looking at a couple of weeks minimum until this gets sent out (unless it does happen this week, then, I will be very surprised). If the distributor is having to call in a consultant to help them plan a "redesign" of their distribution infrastructure, that indicates to me that something went horribly wrong over at Bitfone on Thursday....

I can imagine that it was a long weekend for some people at Bitfone, Motorola, and VZW. I am sure there are quite a few people at all three companies under a lot of pressure to make this perform right. One has asked the question "Why doesn't Motorola find an alternative way of getting this to us." That might take more time than having to wait for Bitfone to complete their work. Whether they post the update.zip online for users to download. (Bad idea, would be more problems than it would be worth) or contract another company to distribute it, doing that takes time, probably more time than they want. We can't see it, but internally, I am sure Moto, VZW and Bitfone are reacting to this mess... Bitfone, because it screwed up, the other two companies because this is costing them reputation, which in the short and long term, is going to cost them money. To think that VZW and Moto are sitting around toying with us, and acting as if they don't care, is the wrong assessment. VZW and Moto have large investments in this product, and it's performance, and keeping current users happy, and getting more Droid customers into the fold. It is not something that is being taken lightly in the corporate offices of both companies. Rest assured, someone out there at all three companies is having a bad Monday because of this, and I will bet that the principle players are scrambling around for a solution right now.

That's how business works...especially when there are hundreds of millions of dollars involved. The problem will be fixed and we will get our update, and there will probably be a press release or two to read when it does come out, about how the last Thursday got messed up. Both companies are going to have to do some "damage control" if you will over this, and they will, in one form or another. I am thinking that we might hear something later in the week... who knows....

What they need to to is add BitToRent-like functionality to the system update feature and let the clients get the update amongst themselves. I would assume that huge numbers of people would be downloading this concurrently.

That would work, to a limited extent, for those out there who have no technical savvy, and their knowledge of the Droid is limited, and if they were to download the update in that manner, there would be many, many calls to VZW's Tech Support/Customer Service from people who messed up either the download, or couldn't install it right. If they thought distributing the update.zip in that manner was a good idea, they would have done it that way from the beginning. In dealing with users of technology, one must keep in mind that not everyone is a "power user"... A large majority of people just want their technology, be it smart phone, computer, laptop, or cable box to work "out of the box" with little or no difficulty. As a computer tech, I would take calls from people who needed help with what many tech/computer savvy people would consider "simple" things. You have to remember, technology is very intimidating to a lot of people, and they don't want to deal with having to push buttons, or touch screens or follow prompts. Anything the companies can do to automate processes, they will do... it makes the customer happy, and reduces calls for solutions to simple issues. I have no doubt that most members here would have little problem with the update.zip file... but we represent about .001% of the total Droid users. The goal of Verizon and Motorola is to make the user experience with the Droid as effort free as possible, and that includes making phone updates automated....

I was in the Verizon store on Saturday to get some screen protectors and asked the guy there about the update. He told me it is being pushed in batches (something we already thought we knew). When I asked him if he knew that or was just pushing the company line, he said he's seen a few customers come in with the update, and that he has it on his Droid. He said everyone should have it by this Friday. We'll see.

Shoulda asked him if you could see his Droid.... :icon_ devil:

Motorla you wont make it

Very poor handling of this, this phone is a pos and they know it. Obvious it still is after 2.1

JUNK

Honestly, I would just appreciate a statement from Verizon or whoever to let us know what is going on with the update. There needs to be better communication with the public.

I'm sorry, but I zall - BS.

Take care of firing Bitfone later, however were they the 2.0.1 distributor?

Basically it comes down to this:

If a capacity issue, then roll it out like 2.0.1. with smaller increments.

If they cannot handle it with the number of Droids that have increased since then, then you roll out with smaller numbers over a larger period of time. The roll out could have began last Friday, and gone to 50,000 users, then 50 again, etc.

Let's face it, we're never going to find out the WHY.

They have burnt their customers again, posting that it's coming then killing the process, and at this point I'm ready to go CyanoGen.

VZ posted it was coming, updated their pages, etc. Now - nothing but a DA quote from one PR rep saying they are pleased.

Pleaed? Hey, sending it out to 1k of you own engineers for a test must be quite an accomplishment in todays internet. Cigars to all involved!

Then, line them up to be shot, without blindfolds.
