News on the release of 2.1

this is getting annoying. Idk wth is wrong with these guys. If anything, it looks bad.
Leaked doc, leaked this and that, and then pull the info once the ETA arrives. It stupid and i hope they realize how bad they look. regardless how great the Moto Droid is, its mad annoying when they do this. This is the 2nd time they did it, if not the 3rd.

I think what everyone is missing is the fact that the update is ready to, and was ready last Thursday, and was held up to due to Bitfone's capacity issues. I have not seen anything that refutes that yet. CK posted an article in the other 2.1 forum that stated that Bitfone was hiring a 3rd party consultant to advise them on how to fix the capacity issue..... If that is the case, then we are looking at a couple of weeks minimum until this gets sent out (unless it does happen this week, then, I will be very surprised). If the distributor is having to call in a consultant to help them plan a "redesign" of their distribution infrastructure, that indicates to me that something went horribly wrong over at Bitfone on Thursday....

I can imagine that it was a long weekend for some people at Bitfone, Motorola, and VZW. I am sure there are quite a few people at all three companies under a lot of pressure to make this perform right. One has asked the question "Why doesn't Motorola find an alternative way of getting this to us." That might take more time than having to wait for Bitfone to complete their work. Whether they post the update.zip online for users to download. (Bad idea, would be more problems than it would be worth) or contract another company to distribute it, doing that takes time, probably more time than they want. We can't see it, but internally, I am sure Moto, VZW and Bitfone are reacting to this mess... Bitfone, because it screwed up, the other two companies because this is costing them reputation, which in the short and long term, is going to cost them money. To think that VZW and Moto are sitting around toying with us, and acting as if they don't care, is the wrong assessment. VZW and Moto have large investments in this product, and it's performance, and keeping current users happy, and getting more Droid customers into the fold. It is not something that is being taken lightly in the corporate offices of both companies. Rest assured, someone out there at all three companies is having a bad Monday because of this, and I will bet that the principle players are scrambling around for a solution right now.

That's how business works...especially when there are hundreds of millions of dollars involved. The problem will be fixed and we will get our update, and there will probably be a press release or two to read when it does come out, about how the last Thursday got messed up. Both companies are going to have to do some "damage control" if you will over this, and they will, in one form or another. I am thinking that we might hear something later in the week... who knows....

I'm sorry, but I zall - BS.

Take care of firing Bitfone later, however were they the 2.0.1 distributor?

Basically it comes down to this:

If a capacity issue, then roll it out like 2.0.1. with smaller increments.

If they cannot handle it with the number of Droids that have increased since then, then you roll out with smaller numbers over a larger period of time. The roll out could have began last Friday, and gone to 50,000 users, then 50 again, etc.

Let's face it, we're never going to find out the WHY.

They have burnt their customers again, posting that it's coming then killing the process, and at this point I'm ready to go CyanoGen.

VZ posted it was coming, updated their pages, etc. Now - nothing but a DA quote from one PR rep saying they are pleased.

Pleaed? Hey, sending it out to 1k of you own engineers for a test must be quite an accomplishment in todays internet. Cigars to all involved!

Then, line them up to be shot, without blindfolds.

agreed, the organization of this was poorly done. Thats my main issue. I would like to have the update, but damn...why keep playing the whole chasing game?

"Hey guys! We know you have been waiting for the update and we will be pushing it out the update tomorrow, haha. or will we?"

geez...

I have no doubt that most members here would have little problem with the update.zip file... but we represent about .001% of the total Droid users. The goal of Verizon and Motorola is to make the user experience with the Droid as effort free as possible, and that includes making phone updates automated....

The thing that you missed in my post was the bit that THEY should integrate this functionality in the updater. What difference does it make to the user if he/she is downloading the data via HTTPS protocol from a single source or via BitToRent protocol from multiple sources. As long as the app that is retrieving the data still behaves like the current one, without requiring any additional steps.

I understand that this may quickly saturate the bandwidth of the expensive wireless 3G network, if so then the turbo update mode can only be made available if you were on WIFI. This would also be otherwise transparent to the user.
They could make a small note: If you would like to get the update faster, please enables WIFI connection for the duration of the download. and add a button (Allow WIFI connection for the duration of the download) which can be turned off after update installation finishes.

The first computer I bought had a 20MG hard drive and my husband swore we would never use that big a HD. I have seen technology change rapidly and not so rapidly over the years, I bought the DROID for what it does and wish for a few extra things. Having worked in the IT world MANY years I have been the recipient and even deployed apps before they should have gone primetime....not pretty. I am very happy to wait for the finished and perfected product! That being said, I do enjoy the forums and actually have learned quite alot from the "civil discourse" :)

I know I am a newbie. I joined this site to learn new and exciting things about my droid from people with ALOT more knowledge about these devices than I do. I am having trouble doing that because I am trying to root through what amounts to be a 3rd grade playground ***** session over something that somebody wants now and cant have. It will be here when it gets here. Stop the whining and let those who enjoy reading through these threads do so in peace. Thank You.. the Newbie..

:welcome: to the Forum. These type of threads take on a life of their own, are very difficult to moderate but believe me we are doing the best we can at trying to keep everybody on the subject. Some post are going to get past us but we are trying to keep up as much as humanly possible.

Thank You very much kind Sir...

I just installed Smoked.Glass 6.0.1 Final and I no longer care if or when the 2.1 is going to come out from Verizon. I like updates on MY schedule!

Please do not discuss ROMs or Rooting on this thread. It's only for the discussion on any news on the release of 2.1 for the Motorola Droid.

I don't want this thread to get out of hand. Let's just keep it on topic.
