I'll be looking forward to 2.1 when it comes out. I do hope it comes with the live wallpaper, but no big deal if it does not.

I have a friend back home who has a stock Droid. If the update comes this week, I will be able to compare mine (Sholes 2.0.2 OC to 800Mhz) to his when I drive back for the weekend.

I have complete faith that they will have 2.1 rooted within days.

So I'd rather get the update and then overclock it.

What's auto rotate?

Here's my question. Can I stay rooted until they roll out this update, and then get feedback on what on it has in it before I decide to take it. Or will it be too late if I don't take the OTA when it's offered? Does that make sense?

You honestly believe Moto is gonna update the Droid till the end of time, even when they have 2 new Android phones coming out in the near future? I don't know man. I give it one year of little updates/bug fixes and that's it. But hell I could be wrong, you could be wrong. We are just guessing right now.

No, but I seriously doubt they would stop supporting their best smart phone to date, four months after its release.

So, how much are you willing to bet on it, since you seem so adamant about your lack of faith in Moto. :)
Aren't they coming out with the a new Android phone in fall? No not the Devour or whatever, something else that's suppose to be better than the Droid? If so, I'm thinking they might forget about the Droid.

The only thing that might save the Droid for a long time is Verizon is backing it pretty hard. Then again they also backed the LG Dare hard too and that phone never saw any upgrades out side of bug fixes. So its anyone's guess.

I for one won't be upgrading. Until I can put Flash on either as a download from Adobe or a ROM update...no point. What does 2.1 offer that I don't already have besides Flash that makes it worth losing different ports from the Milestone, the ability to overclock, the ability to monitor real time temps, the ability to take a screenshot without having to use a home replacement app, etc etc?

Nothing.

Well you are perfectly able to stay at 2.0.1 with 2.1 apps, but moto did make the phone and would be able to make significant optimizations for battery life, graphical performance.... things of that nature. We won't really know until it comes out. Even if there was nothing "cool" added the optimizations that moto might have made would probably worth it since I don't think any dev hackers are privy to specs for things like the omaps gpu...etc

Only thing really on my mind is that apparently all the OC kernels are only based on 2.0 kernel code so I don't know how that works. Would all the kernel changes if any be released with the rest of 2.1 or are those locked away with moto? It will suck having to wait for a real 2.1 based overclocked kernel so we get any optimization that are made.

anyways.... WOOOOO 2.1 finally

When did I say two years? You need to learn to read my friend.
The phone is about 3 months old right now. The update still isn't out, and no one (including Cereal) can predict EXACTLY when it will be. You said one more year of updates after (perhaps).

So basically the phone stops getting updates about 6 months or so before anyone can get a free upgrade? Who gives a **** at that point?

And you still didn't answer my question - what MUST you have from even this update (let alone future ones) that you can't get with custom ROMs, apps, etc?
I don't know, I haven't rooted my phone, so I can't say.

Grey you doubt that the Droid is their flagship device for the years ahead?

If you're rooted with the latest SPRecovery you won't be able to take the OTA. If you are JUST rooted you will. If you don't take the update you can just hit "don't install" or whatever and then go into settings and about phone and check for updates when you decide to install it.

I will be unrooting my phone on Thursday goodbye fake 2.1 hello new 2.1.

Question though: Should I delete the 2.1 gallery and music player or will the update automatically negate them??

According to articles it does not...but who knows until you get it.
Exactly why I am waiting to see what happens when the update finally gets here. It's been interesting to see the 2.1 evolve from where it first started on here to the present day.

In my mind though after seeing the live wallpapers there is no reason to think that it will slow the Droid down all that much if at all. Especially since they can tap the GPU to handle it. If it doesn't come on 2.1 maybe it will on a later version or I can always root my phone if I want it that bad. I just like the idea of it, and I liked the ones I saw on my friends N1 plus it is fun to bring that up with my iPhone friends too. :)
