[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

Great, thanks. I realize the answers exist on the forums, and I have been trying so hard to sift through things and find answers. Thats why I gave up and came here. I would like for someone to explain things in plain English to me.

Can someone tell me exactly what SBF is? Is it the firmware for the phone?

And will a new SBF or ROM fix the random restarts?

Thanks for your patience

It was the Droid I was looking for.

Just got an R2D2 version 2 days ago. Haven't set it down yet. Phenomenal device, and great looks. Only problem I have with it, is Motorola. It has the same chipset as the Droid 2 World, but was downclocked to only 1Ghz. Also, all the motorola apps are annoying. Would prefer it to be regular Android OS, with the Artoo goodies.

System Boot File. After flashing this file, your phone will be out-of-the-box stock.

The most recent version of the D2 SBF can be found here. This is the only SBF that works with the R2D2.

TBH & MyDroidWorld Present: Droid 2 (2.3.20) Triple Threat

It might fix the reboots and then again, it might not. There are several reasons reboots happen. Conflicting apps, wrong app removed, bad files, etc.

Hey everyone, first post here.

1. I have a R2D2 Droid 2, and the novelty of the Star Wars stuff has worn off. The phone is rooted, and I would like a clean vanilla ROM with no bloatware. Can anyone tell me what ROMs work with the R2D2?

2. The main reason I am so eager to replace the ROM is because my phone reboots itself multiple times each day, usually after it is locked, or during unlock. I have been told that this is a common glitch and some custom ROMs fix this problem.

Thanks

Searching the forums will turn up answers to most of the questions you have...

SBF the Full 2.3.20 SBF and then install whatever ROM you want.

that's the simple answer.

I gotta admit it is hard shifting through all the threads to find the exact one you need. The search bar doesn't seem to work that great either, I search photo editor and found this :/

For Reboots......
I've learned that some problems with rebooting can be fixed by installing an app that can "fix permissions". I use Rom Manager from ClockworkMod. In the setting run "Fix Permissions", in will take a minute or two to complete. I helped my phones.

Why so much hate?

Fellow R2 owners (and trolls that read this thread),

Can anyone tell me why there is so much hate and discontent over our beloved Droid? Droid Life, Droid Forum and pretty much any forum that advertised the R2-D2 Droid 2 has such nasty comments about the phone. I happen to LOVE my R2 unit and proudly wear it in a holster on my belt. It has become a conversation point practically everywhere I go.

Some comments I've read:

"Can you imagine sporting that phone around a party or a bar? That thing is chick repellent. You'll be laughed at for that ugly thing. They should get rid of the R2-D2 graphics and leave it white, that will sell better."

"If they ever do a re-make of Revenge of the Nerds, the Louis and Gilbert characters could have these phones prominently holstered on their belts. As they walk through the campus, the big jock Ogre sees R2-D2 and yells out "NERDS!" This phone could be the pocket protector of the 21st century. "

"of course they do, because it was a lame idea from the start only a select few chumps bought into it. friends dont let friends buy an R2D2 phone "

For the record, I am over 40 - not a kid by any stretch of the imagination. I have worn it to bars (and have had NUMEROUS comments from both men AND women), have worn it to management meetings, and even interviews - and not once was I called unprofessional.

If you don't like it, that's fine, but
1) I do (as do many others)
2) I am not a "chump" for buying it (nor are any of the others)

So, what do ya'll think?

I think I really want one, however the price tag is a bit high as I am 8 months away from being able to upgrade at a reasonable price!

I think it looks awesome and if you are using your phone to get chicks you are doing it wrong.

Who cares bro, this is the coolest phone, or toy, or gadget, all of the above. I really enjoy the hell out of it. All the cool people I know like it as well. As for the rest of the world, again who cares!!!!
Enjoy your toy, if Star Wars gets any bigger it will become a religion. LOL the most popular movies of all time!!

Hahaha. I know I wanted it when I saw it, but it was a $100 more then just the regular D2 and they had to order it, and I want a phone that day. Now I see that you can buy it in a package with all the excessories for the same price I paid for my D2.

Verizon to give D2 if your R2 unit needs replacement?

Has anyone else been told that if you have to have your R2D2 phone replaced it will be replaced with a standard D2 unit. When I purchased one this past weekend I was told that this is the case. Verizon rep said they don't have R2 units available to swap if you have to return yours under warranty.

Not that big a deal, just wondering if anyone else has been told this same thing.

I ran into this once back in the day of the razor. I got them to find me one, but I can see there being a shortage of these. Did you ask if they plan on fixing this problem? Make them give you a phone of equal value as these cost more than the Droid2. This maybe a limited edition phone, but it comes with a one year warrenty. Right?

I was told just the opposite. When I was having trouble with an R2D2, I asked to get the regular D2 that didn't have that noisy bootup, but they said it had to be exchanged for the same model. (Thank goodness for Fission and its silent bootup.)

New to the forum, new to smartphones (previously on the VZW freebie phone)

I ordered my R2D2 droid today, so it should be arriving Friday and I'm psyched! I've wanted a smartphone for a while, but I'm too much of a cheapskate and too worried that technology will go out of date to have gotten one sooner.

I'm just doing research so that I know what to expect when I get my phone. I read through this thread and it was helpful to clear up what ROMS and rooting are, but I'm not sure if I'm going to root my phone yet. I want to be able to do wireless tethering, but here is my question: is this the same as the $20/month option that you can get from VZW? If it is, and if it's legal (i'm doubtful of this), I'll just do this and save the money... why not?

Also, I think I'll be happy with the starwars themed stuff, but I could see how it could become annoying to have a clip of 'the best of R2' and that Hoth binocular app permanently taking up space on my phone. With rooting, I would be able to delete extraneous pre=loaded files, right? I'm not a dummy, so I could probably follow the instructions to root the phone... but I don't really know what I'm doing, so I'm leaning towards just leaving it stock. Also, that sucks that it makes noise every time you turn it on... but I don't think that getting rid of that would justify me risking turning my phone into a 'brick'.

Dude they best of r2d2 vid and the binoculars really don't take up tht muchbspace plus the phone comes with an 8 gig memory stick free. Also I have had my phone rooted and been using wireless tether for about a month and I still haven't had any problems or extra charges for using it. I would recomend just rooting it and using only the wireless tether for free cause I personally don't wanna take the chance in messing with roms and stuff and bricking my phone I really don't kno much about it so im not risking it. But I use my wireless tether everyday and play on xbox live with no lag its badass
