P3Droid: Some Food for Thought - Bootloaders, Rooting, Manufacturers, and Carriers

Wow 17 pages. Didn't know people thought p3droid was a prophet. He's almost as bad as Engadget with the trafficing.

All I have to say about this... is that if you are worried about them figuring out you're rooted... theft of service (wifi tethering) is not the way to do it.

Is anyone going to flash back to stock because of this? I want to make a poll about it. :D

Please don't get into snide remarks on a thread that hasn't been overly volatile.

And no, not unrooting. Unless I read part of the article wrong, it inclined it would be FUTURE devices that were going to really be set up to give the capabilities of reporting the users to carriers, not necessarily current devices.

As far as being glib about P3's article, he isn't the only one that has mentioned this. Make no mistake, there is reality to the situation. You may not like it, but it is there.

Not this again. Always boils down to two things. The people who swear they're doing nothing wrong when they know they are, and the smart people who know what a smartphone data plan is

I don't think it has as much to do with intelligence or academic achievement as much as it does with morals. People with good moral standing do not steal. Plain and simple.

Lol where does Verizon fall into this catagory?

Either way I don't believe my network is slow because of the millions of unauthorized people tethering.

I don't steal. I don't want to steal. If at the time of my contract there was no tethering service offered, and my contract has not expired yet... how am I stealing? Especially when I specifically informed VZW that I planned to occassionally tether, then he ADVISED me on an app that would facilitate it?

That's like saying everyone that buys the thunderbolt and gets grandfathered into unlimited data before tiered pricing, has a moral obligation to go back to verizon and say they feel as though they should now be on tiered data once it hits.... regardless of how long is left on the contract. Will everyone on their high horse do that? No? Then you are also stealing.

I stand by my opinion.

I will most likely be under tiered pricing by the time I renew my contract. That is fine, I welcome it. I will discuss tethering with them when I renew. If they say I cannot, then I will not. In the interim, I have not violated my contract. It was not a service offered at that time.

Here's a test. If you use Verizon's actual Wireless Hotspot that they specifically put on the phone to tether (and you aren't on the TB which gets free tethering initially), are you charged for tethering? Is there a requirement to download a secondary app or nonapproved app to tether for free?

Those questions make things rather clear.

I think the whole outcome of this is that verizon will put data cap and might not care if we root or not. Thats the only way to control the people who hog the bandwith with their tetherings.

Everyone needs to get out of the mindset that this whole thing is about tethering. It's not. Not by a longshot.

You talked to a rep who didn't know better. If you talk to a higher up they will very specifically tell you the droid 1 cannot tether (which is not true) but they will tell you that.

Well lets put it this way. I'm not thinking about rooting agina because of this. At least that's a large part of it.

That's why I'm looking specifically for my next device to be something that I don't feel like I have to root because I feel it works good, or at least good enough, untouched.

I still have my D1 with an upgrade on my account and another upgrade set to kick in, in November. If this does prove true I will upgrade to the phone of choice and be happy with what I get. The D1 has been very good to me and I have loved the rooting process and really getting to know about the inner workings of our phones. But with that being said, the specs being released on these phones now are really remarkable. Overclocking and stuff like that may not be necessary anymore. I will say I would love away to be able to remove pre-installed junk. I think a lot of people root for that very reason alone. Fine take away rooting but give us some control over stuff like that. Afterall, this is supposed to be open source right?

Absolutely and completely agree!
