P3Droid: Some Food for Thought - Bootloaders, Rooting, Manufacturers, and Carriers

Hypothetical $15 for 500mb!?! I hypotheticaly could not stomach that rip off.

It's not a rip off for somebody like my wife who only uses about 150MB max a month. It's a savings of $180 a year. I would bet that a lot of Verizon customers only use less than 500MB a month. I normally use less than 500MB a month too and have never hit 1GB in a month, so we would be very happy with my hypothetical pricing structure. Actually, your stomach doesn't concern me. Me saving money is what I care about.

Lawlz I don't doubt that.

I meant paying $15 for 500mb is ,if not a rip off, then very expensive for such a small amount of data in 2011. $5 is (sort of) reasonable for such a small amount.

Again, it's not just tethering. What about people who root and remove the bloatware. VZW doesn't want you to do that. They are hoping you'll press City I.D. and like it. I'm sure Amazon paid them good money to put their app on there as well. When people pull these apps off their phone, that's revenue loss.

Hook, you got it all wrong. It's all about the tethering - keeping the man down!

Seriously, I never thought thought this was about tethering. I still don't. It's just a nice side effect.

The phone companies want to end root, so we cannot remove bloat. Plain and simple. Amazon, Blockbuster, etc. paid to have their apps on our phones. The phone companies will be able to charge more if they can guarantee 100% of phones will have the apps permanently.

You guys want NetFlix streaming? Not until root is gone. Studios won't allow it until Android is locked down.

There may be govt implications here. If Android is locked up tight, think how many Blackberrys could be retired.

Oh, and before I get accused of fanboyism, I'm not. Far from it. I've been rooted since the day D1 root was available. Anyone remember what an adventure that was? I tether, not a ton, but I do. If this is all true, I'll be devastated. My phone will go back to being an appliance.

most logical explanation given the carriers/manufacturers' approach. You wanna get rid of tethering, you go after the devs first

I doubt Verizon cares if 15k out of millions remove bloat. They get paid whether it stays on or not. The problem with rooting is customization. Instead of buying their gingerbread 1 ghz phone you have a gingerbread 1.8 ghz overclocked phone with everything and every look you want. Why would you upgrade?

I disagree completely iPhone is jailbroken and they have netflix. Why is android the faulty one?

Personally until I see 100% proof of this from VZW I don't care and am gonna continue flashing my heart out. I see nothing about this anywhere but here. I will stay rooted. Plus they have to go thru the fcc. And they been wanting.g to tax internet for a long time now and nothing.g has happened.

Personally P3 should release where his source got this info. He cause a big uproar for something with out cold hard facts.

I like how people believe him so easily.

So check this out: Team Black Hat got removed for selling stolen property. Does him selling a unreleased firmware and covering his ass by putting out this sound more believable now?

Streaming compatibility is the cause for not being able to stream movies and shows. It's an easy fix though. Has absolutely NOTHING to do with being rooted. I would suggest lockman do his research before making the faulty assumption that rooting is the cause for this error.

well it does make more sense than a lot of the other conspiracies being floated... what's more effective for VZW, going after 1000's of end users or just a handful of devs who enable those end users...

sorry p3droid, I still respect your work... questions do arise tho

I second this.

Sorry if this was already asked but I couldn't find it - I saw a few people mention this was brought on by something that happened specifically to him dealing with firmware or something or other? I might just be under a rock but what happened?

I second this.

I third this. These people with inside "sources" are rarely right and just cause an uproar for no reason. And people just blindly believe everything a dev tells them. Reminds me of when people were saying "I'm seeing double download speeds!!!" after applying the placebo throttle mod. I don't know why the devs are worshiped blindly but I don't buy this crap.
