P3Droid: Some Food for Thought - Bootloaders, Rooting, Manufacturers, and Carriers

Personally until I see 100% proof of this from VZW I don't care and am gonna continue flashing my heart out. I see nothing about this anywhere but here. I will stay rooted. Plus they have to go thru the fcc. And they been wanting.g to tax internet for a long time now and nothing.g has happened.

Personally P3 should release where his source got this info. He cause a big uproar for something with out cold hard facts.

P3 Droid clearly states the reason why he can't reveal his sources. People would lose their jobs.

Suffice to say his reputation is spot on. I've never seen him personally make a statement and get it wrong. I've seen other people translate his statement and be wrong.

If you choose not to believe him that's entirely up to you. A little common sense however makes it seem like it is entirely possible and coming down the pipe.

Your advances no longer will be in rooting, it's going to be in hardware. But I can't force you to accept that, so continue rooting as long as you can.

If you like, pop over to MDW and read his statement again. Or maybe it's on the front page, I don't know the threads were merged now. You make your own decision.

Well said Hook. I am cautiously suspicious of this but P3 has been right about many things long before an official VZW notice hit. Take it for what its worth but don't be surprised if this does prove true.

maybe i don't know the reputation of this guy? what has he been right about, and please don't cite sweeping generalizations like "the thunderbolt will be out either the end of Q1, all of Q2, or beginning of Q3" haha...

Mostly about updates, like froyo, GB stuff like that. I can't cite any of the top of my head, I am sure I could go back through some threads and find more definitive examples.

Yeah like I said I am suspiciously cautious as of now. But if this does happen I won't be taken by surprise. I mean there is a good chance he could be misinformed. But I don't think he would be saying this unless he had good reason too. Obviously there is a chance his source is wrong. It's all a waiting game as of now. Until I see something definite I will remain rooted though.

I can agree with that.

But I look at it this way with info. Example if I was to tell someone I couldn't stand "john doe", and that info went down the "pipe" eventually it would end up sounding like hate said person I hope they die I am gonna kick there a** etc... So info gets lost in translation from one person to the next.

Even if P3 is correct it has to go thru court. VZW isn't stupid, if they did this they would loose many many customers. But we will see I guess

Also, when you're at Verizon renewing your contract, do they take the time to go over everything that you're actually signing to? When I initially got a smartphone, the rep kept pushing "unlimited data for only $29.99". There wasn't any mention of tethering or what you can and cannot do with your "unlimited" data. They get your money and tell you to sign on the machine without going over the contract or telling you what you're signing. Honestly how many of us actually read the contract and ToS before signing them?

If you are foolish enough not to read a contract you sign...I have some great ocean front property to sell you in Arizona.

It is your responsibility to know what you are buying, not the salesman, if you do not ask him what is included, that is your fault not his.

Bottom line is, what you chose not to read in the ToS, or you chose to ignore, that's on you. If you dont like it, dont sign it.(but I guess you'd have to read it to know) No one held a gun to your head and made you do it.

So I take it that you are not rooted, never rooted, never uninstalled the bloat, installed a ROM, etc?

so I finally read this thing and I must admit I wouldn't mind if phones were unable to be rooted. I mean yeah I like being able to root my phone, change theme's, ROM's, and so on. But I dont care about tethering....pretty much anything my laptop can do my Droid 2 can do as well. So no need to tether. In addition ever since I rooted my phone I have thoughts of just going back to stock and being done with it.

one thing about not being able to root is the chances of "bricking" your device just got reduced to the chances of being struck by lightning or winning the powerball....instead of the 50\50 chance we are on right now.

Blocking ads is a dealbreaker for me. Ill go get a virgin mobile android phone and root away if I must.

Maybe there's something I don't know about newer phones, but I've still yet to hear about someone who truly bricked an android phone while rooting. I'm sure someone out there figured out a way, but in no way should it be a 50/50 chance!

This is not, nor has it ever been about tethering. If it was, they would have pulled the apps from the Market and put a stop to it with a simple software update, or throttled people who were obviously tethering.

To all of you condemning tethering, stop it. If you are rooted for any reason, you have ZERO room to point fingers. None.

You violated your ToS as much as anyone that tethers.

The joke is on you, as you feel that you are somehow "above" the people that tether, because they are stealing while you are not. False. You are stealing as well, by removing the bloat and crap that someone paid Verizon to put and KEEP on there. You are stealing when you install an app for free, that gives you a feature that Verizon charges for. You are stealing when you return your phone, knowing that the warranty was void the second you rooted it.

The bottom line, is that VZW is not going after tetherers. They are going after ROOTERS. They will cite tethering because that helps them justify going after rooters in general, because in their eyes, it is rooting that ENABLES tethering. And removing bloat. And installing apps that VZW would rather charge you for. Etc...

They do not care if you personally never tethered, they really don't. What they care about is that if you root, then you have the ABILITY to tether, or remove the bloat, etc... Whether you do it or not is irrelevant, merely being rooted allows you those options, and they do not want you to have those options, period.

So whether you tether or not, you should be against this whole thing. Because if you just root to theme your phone and improve battery life, you are being judged GUILTY of tethering/removing bloat and all the rest, just because you have the potential to do those things.

That is no different that accusing someone of drunk driving, simply because they have a car and beer at home. Just because I have the ability to get drunk and drive, doesn't mean that I am doing it. So locking me up because the potential is there, is morally and legally wrong.

Just as taking away guns from the 80 million or so legal gun owners in the US, who on average have less than 0.005% of them commit violent crimes with those guns, would be wrong, simply because having the gun would ENABLE them to commit the crimes. The fact is, the majority of them are not, so proclaiming them guilty simply because they have the MEANS to do it, is wrong.

That's what this is about. They want to control the phones, so that they can control the content and increase fees. In order to do that, they need to eliminate the ability to root.

They will cite tethering and some other things that have some degree of merit, but they are not really interested in that. It's a means to an end.

It's an argument to get people on board with what their real goal is; To control content and increase fees.

So I don't care if you tether or not. It's a moot argument. If you root, for any reason, you are just as guilty in VZW's eyes. You are not better than a tetherer, and it gets annoying to see some of you pretend to be.

It would be like I am sitting in a holding cell for reckless driving, and you are looking down your nose at me, while you yourself are in the same cell for buying weed. You(the general term) come off as a hypocrite.
