[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

DO NOT USE THAT SBF.

You have flashed a 2.01 kernel onto a 2.2 phone. That is what's causing your issue. You need a fullfile sbf, or a working backup/update.zip ROM.

Thanks Guidot, this definitely helps explaining the odd behavior. Where can I find the fullfile sbf or a working update.zip/backup? (I did a backup post flashing so I assume that would be useless).

Thanks again for your help! ;)

I wanted to install MIUI 1.7.15 on this DROID would that have anything to do with the update.zip? I guess not because MIUI is a ROM and I need a 2.2 Kernel right?

That has a 2.2 kernel in it (or higher) so that could potentially fix your issue.

teddyearp has the fullfile on his server, link in his signature.

With "That" you are referring to MIUI? Thanks for the pointer to Teddyearp signature! :) I am chatting in web irc with the peeps at MIUI.us and they are being very helpful... one more thing to love about that ROM :) I am keeping my fingers crossed! ;P

THanks again, will post results...

Yes that is what I meant.

If you have more trouble don't hesitate to open another thread in the rescue squad section.

We try to keep this clean (it is a million pages long!).

Thanks!

Yes I know... already 187 pages! (Maybe that's why the guys at MIUI added IRC to the forum). We could delete our exchange or pass it to a new topic "DROID 1: No signal, no battery, loop rebooting after sbf flashing" or something like that :)

Way to go! Not only the people at MIUI are nice and very available as much as here, but with the IRC chat if they have time they are extremely helpful and responsive... wow.
Add to it that the MIUI ROM looks very sharp and clean, it has all the apps and many UI improvement, requiring to get almost no tweaking apps/widgets since the functionalities are already there and that makes it already (as of today) the only ROM I'll ever use.
Then there is also the fact that is updated every Friday... and all of this is free!

So one ends up saying: Wow! What more could I want from a ROM and a support community? ;D

Ok enough with the MIUI kudos... and I have to give you props here for pointing me in the right direction. You were spot on Guidot! It was a kernel issue and it was fixed with the MIUI install which I did via SPRecovery using the "deprecated" update.zip install.
On that note I am a bit puzzled... why is it deprecated since all ROMS come as zip and none as tarballs, which is what the "select ROM to install" expects... in fact if trying to use that "non-deprecated" option it will fail complaining that the SD card had no tar file... ?:|

Thanks again to all of you who pitched in with invaluable tips and info!

PS: Sorry to make this thread longer with these extra posts releated to flashing issues that came from using the method in post#1... I would move the whole chunk of our exchange to a separate thread to shorten this one, but I don't think I am authorized to do so hence if someone who is wanted to move it elsewhere go right ahead, it'd be a good house cleaning since it's all in sequence since I started posting ;)

Hello,

So I read through the procedure and attempted it. I am currently stuck.

I got up to step 16 when "install/sdcard/update.zip (deprecated).

It fails during this step and I am wondering what to do. My phone reads...

--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
opening update package...
verifying update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

So what is my next step... Do i restart my droid or will that mess things up? or do I remove the sd card and recopy the update.zip file back on to it and retry the rebooting holding "x"?

Please help!

Thanks,
Mike

Seems Im not the only one who has gotten this. Yes I made sure the extensions one the file were correct. I will download again and reinstall on sd card...

Did you select "Allow update.zip" first?

Thanks, just got it!

Chrome was corrupting the file (both times). When DLed in IE it works. odd.

But thanks for the help!

I just wanted to point something out. This method that you posted in #1859:
On my Droid 1 after rooting with RDSlite 4.9 and SPRecovery_ESE81.

Is not at all the same as post #1 in this thread as you seem to imply here:

PS: Sorry to make this thread longer with these extra posts releated to flashing issues that came from using the method in post#1...

I just want to make sure of no confusion for the readers who come along later.

And I haz all the Droid files.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place. I just spent about half an hour browsing this thread, but at 188 pages, I was quickly overwhelmed, and I don't know where else to turn.

I rooted using the method described in post #1 and everything went fine. Two things escaped me.

1) The instructions didn't recommend to do a backup prior to Rooting the Droid, so I didn't.

2) That with a manual Rooting process, it isn't a 1-click step to UN-root the device if I should ever need to.

With that said, is there a simple process that is easily outlined to remove Root access (or even hide it), should I need to? If it is somewhere else in this thread, if someone could point to it, I'd be very grateful.

If you need more information about the Droid 1 that I've rooted, I can gather that information as well. I don't have the device with me right now.

I don't need to immediately remove root on the device at the moment, but I may have the need in the near future. I just wasn't thinking ahead.

I searched on unrooting on the web, and found a few forums describing theoretical processes that might work to remove a manual root, but I'm wondering if this particular method has a specific method which should be used to remove root. Before I go off and try those methods, I figured I should check back here. Again, my apologies - I should have thought about and asked these questions before I moved ahead with rooting the device.
