[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

So i followed this method to add root to my brothers stock droid (did the same thing to my droid back when it had 2.1). I downloaded all the files from the op, followed all the steps.

I follow the steps exactly, including holding up on dpad after the sbf finishes flashing so i get the 'PASS' message in RSD Lite. Once that is flashed i press power to turn off the phone from the bootloader. Then I press x and power and get into sprecovery. I made a backup, then rebooted first just to make sure the backup would be there. Then when I rebooted to get into recovery to apply the update.zip, it went to the stock recovery.

For some reason, sprecovery won't stick. The sbf is flashed correctly, but once the phone is rebooted, the recovery goes back to stock. If i go straight to recovery after flashing the sbf from the bootloader, it is sprecovery. After a reboot, it is stock. Anybody know why??

Edit: Oh, maybe i should mention this. When he had frg01b, he rooted using easy root. So when he updated to 22d, he lost root, but the easy root app was still there. So before i used this method, i just uninstalled easy root.

Have you tried another USB port? Is it plugged into a hub or directly into the computer?
Have you ever plugged your Droid into your computer? Did it recognize it then?
I might try uninstalling the drivers and see if it tries to see it then.
Are you running as an admin?
Also try booting into stock recovery and see if it recognizes it.
I'm guessing you have no problems with other USB devices?

*Tried all 3 usb ports on my Lenovo T61
*Tried connecting to girlfriend's T400 w/XP Pro
*Directly connected to USB ports
*Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, restarting
*Running as admin
*No trouble with other usb devices
*Can boot into stock recovery

Here are some new clues:
*My computer makes a noise, signifying that the device is connected when I turn on the Droid into bootloader
*Although connected, I do not see the droid under my computer as an external HDD
*I do see it under my computer as 'SE Flash OMAP3430 MI'

I am coming from a rooted Eris and the control afforded by rooting terribly. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

You have to install the update.zip with SU in it or a custom ROM the first time you get into SPRecovery -- otherwise it reboots stock, which is explained in the guide. I'm guessing you missed it? ;) Unfortunately you have to start over.

Oops!!! Ok my mistake :P Thanks fur for the explanation.

Will "rooting" my phone make my internet experience faster? Also, will my apps stay intacked after I've rooted? (I realize these questions have probably been asked/answered several times on this forum, but I'm pretty overwhelmed with all this already). Thx.

The biggest detrimental effect I've noticed from rooting is that it causes the Droid's owner to become more curious about new modifications to their phones. It usually starts with a few special "root-only" apps that make maintenance easier and are just plain cool to use. Then it moves to overclocking, and once you're used to that it'll be about 2-3weeks before you'll be on your first custom ROM. And afterward, you'll be wondering why you waited so long to do it? dancedroid

@ drpaul07: To confirm and further eloborate on Mr Mammal's post, MotoCache1's update.zip file needs to be applied not only because it puts the proper files in the right places, etc., but the script it contains also runs the all important
Code:
mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p.old
command to rename the file that checks for and flashes the stock recovery if it has been modified.

Not using this method. Files for the A855 won't work all that well on the A856 Milestone. Try alldroid.org or cyanogenmod.com.

good luck

i have read around and cannot find an answer on this for sure, my dad wants to root but only to overclock and be able to back up his phone, he does not want to wipe his phone or install anything that will. following this procedure will his phone be the same as now just rooted? i used easyroot and thats how it worked on my phone, so im not familiar with this way.

This works the same way. The update.zip only adds root (su, busybox etc.) You can also backup stock before you apply the update.
This method just adds sprecovery to block OTA updates that will remove root, and to backup/restore nandroid backup files.

PS you should think about doing this yourself if you don't have a recovery. Sprecovery or clockworkmod recovery.

no i have rom manager and clockwork. i have a mac and so does my dad, but my sis has windows we can use. i was going to help him cause i sent him this thread and he said he has no idea what any of that means, i do. he is techy like me so im sure eventually he will go with roms and other stuff

I cant install the usb drivers. Is there any way i can still root? Thats the only thing holding me back. No access to a better computer either...
