SBF to root and to unroot

new to the boards. I researched rooting my stock 2.1 for 3 days from every board imaginable. just as a heads up, the links on the first post of this thread are obsolete/inactive. I finally found a great step-by-step thread here How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid

Just a heads up to anyone attempting this on Vista**the tips/hints on the above mentioned site for rooting on windows 7 also apply to Vista. Make sure you have winrar or some other type of unzip proggy installed on your pc also. Other than that it took like 15 minutes. Have fun! :)

Edited for question:::**

Now that I am stock 2.1 rooted, if i want to download a custom ROM, i would need to find one that is 2.1 base correct? to avoid loseing my apps and stuff?

It says, copy file from computer onto root of sdcard, where is the root? i'm having trouble finding the root of my sdcard

when u look in windows explorer at the available files the root is where the files are.. there is not a folder called root. drop the .zip under all the folders, and that is the root

sprecovery rooted and using terminal/tools and MM

christim, I used your guide for the loading sprecovery and then using the update.zip method to load bb1.1, I have the ninja icon and everything is running fine, my question though is this..Even though I am rooted, not through traditional standards of terminal commands, can I use terminal to apply MM themes, busybox or any other type of linux tool set OR is there another way to load these apps and use them?

or does this require a traditional rooting method (by traditional I mean, doing everything through terminal and not sprecovery)

well apparently, busybox was installed and active, in terminal I ran

su
busybox
and it asked too allow superuser permissions then spit out all the busybox info such as the makers and what not, then I installed MM which did the same thing with superuser permissions and did all the checks and started up fine...sorry for the question since it was already there

Ya you are still allowed to run commands in the terminal. Busybox comes with bugless beast and is you go to his forum you will see all the commands you can enter to get different scripts for your phone.

np, and rooted, however you get there is rooted. It means you have the access to now edit any file on the phone and therefore can replace any file on the phone, which lets you mod, or modify it to your liking (or even really mess it up:))

Some use Terminal Emulator, others use Root Explorer others use the SDK kit and push files with ADB. For premade MM files I just mount my phone and put them into place and let MM do the rest.

new to the boards

just as a heads up, the links on the first post of this thread are obsolete/inactive.

just scrolling through the last few posts here. The links work for me so maybe the site they were hosted on was having an issue when you tried. sorry about that. This weekend I'm hoping to have some time to review and update the op of this thread without changing too much as we want to keep posts referencing that op relevant so they can assist others.

Welcome to the board...glad you got rooted ok!

you had directed me to your post to try to fix my problem. I have tried everything you recommended and I am still not getting it to work. I have tried on Vista and 7. I will have to try on xp. I am still getting the error when I try to flash it ( 0 x 7100). I tried seeing if it worked anyway and I can not boot into recovery. My phone just keeps looping on the droid words and red eye logo. Any other suggestions? Thank you for the help.

Is it normal for RSD lite to recognize my phone as "flash se OMAP..."?

mod edit: came from this thread originally: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/re...ill-not-start-up-boot-into-recovery-help.html

Yes that is normal for it too say that..if you are running windows 7 you can go to run-->type msconfig and hit enter then go to Tools-->highlight Change UAC Settings click Launch--> slide bar to the very bottom click ok, reboot PC..uninstall RSDlight, then reboot then reinstall RSDlite and reboot PC again..then try

Before you plug the phone in, in RSD go to config-->DeviceID-->click the bottom option First Come First Servce-->click ok-->then follow the options to mount and flash thru RSD, if after you plug your phone in you don't see it show up as the flash se OMAP then click on show device then it should say it...then follow the directions

recap of the basics..

You have the latest rsd lite? (others have tried earlier version and had issues)

Regrab the sbf file. Do any sbf files work? You can always flash back to 2.01 then get sprecovery via other methods than rsdlite if sprecovery is the sbf file not working for you.

Have you been able to try RSD Lite from other computers? (if the same sbf file is failing on multiple computers, it becomes more likely there is an issue with the sbf file)

I just tried all of that and I am still getting the same error.
