Swype Android Beta!!

ok i got it installed, and it said "the swype package is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality" and i tried using it and it wouldn't even work

My Droid is not rooted. I installed beta Swype last night (had issues, but got it working) and all was good this morning. Just now, I clicked on xscope (my default browser) and the favorites page is gone. I shut down my droid and pulled the battery and when i turned it back on I got the same message that you stated above. I tried to text using swype and got nothing but a beep. I uninstalled beta swype. will try to install the leaked version again. good grief.

My Droid is not rooted either. I was using the leaked version from the onset, but scrapped it in hopes this new one would have better functionality. I'm sorry I deleted it.

I downloaded it through the stock browser and, like you, I can't get it to do anything more than "beep" at me. I'm looking at reinstalling the "leaked" version again as well. Not happy with this outcome. :(

Well, it's still not working. The xscope browser was a separate problem. The developer sent out a bad update, but fixed it and xscope is good. Still nothing on beta swype. It looks like it should work, but I can only tap letters. I also have the window that says this version of swype may not work with your phone or it has issues. I get the swype swirly thing when I swype, just no letters. I also get the suggestion box for words, but nothing else.

The problem with xScope is covered in great detail on the thread dealing with xScope. Uninstall and Reinstall and you'll be fine.

As far as "reinstalling the 'leaked' version," that's likely impossible since the reason the beta was released is that the 'leaked' version has timed out. (At least the original 'leaked' version.)

I'd recommend trying the install of the beta version again making sure that your credentials on the Swype website match those you're trying to use to install the software. And you may want to check to see that you don't have another version of the "install" application for Swype installed. If you do, try deleting it before you go through the install procedure for Swype.

P.S. It's also entirely possible that the install is not universally OK with different devices. There have been problems reported on some of the early Android phones as well as on the Nexus One. Swype has apparently indicated they'll look at the install issues beginning on Monday.

I noticed they finally made it so if you hold down backspace it will delete everything instead of just one word and stop.

Yay for official swype! Suggestion list popup is pretty snazzy looking now too!

I think I might have found a solution for us latest SmokedGlass ROM users. I'll post back in a bit to test if I finally got it to install correctly.

Also waiting for a reply. I was thinking about going back to stock and installing then rooting again but thats too much, and i dont even know if that would work.

I reinstalled the beta version now 3 times.. each time that I initially install it, it works great, but my Droid gets "laggy" so I'll restart the Droid and then this is when I have problems with Swype. I also made sure I deleted all files related to the "leaked" version before I installed the new version (beta). Any suggestions would be great! Again, this isn't a rooted Droid, so I don't know what is going wrong...

I kept getting the same error about not configured for my phone but thanks to all of you, I deleted all old files using Astro, copied the URL using the stock browser and it worked perfectly. Thanks!! I am seriously keyboard handicapped with the Droid but love Swype.

Great news, everyone! I've finally got it to work after doing a lot of deleting. So it is official that after getting rid of the "leaked" version and installing the beta version of Swype that it will work for us SmokedGlass ROM users. Let me take a couple of minutes to type all the steps necessary (there's a lot to do just to install it properly LOL) and I will post back again so you can all do it too.

Yay! Sype beta works! :)

Great Work man! Can't wait for the guide!

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere here but,

Each time I reboot the phone I get an error message saying I have the wrong version. I can then only hit individual letters. Then I have to change back to the stock keyboard then back to Swype keyboard in order to get it to work again.

Anyone else with this problem?

Yup, same problem. Wish they'd go back to the trial until they get the reboot issue fixed.

This morning I installed the leaked version. It said it was expired, so I uninstalled it. Then I signed up for the beta and downloaded it to my phone. It installed fine and just as I was starting to test it out (seems way cool) my wife reminded that I was going to put skins on our phones (bestskinsever.com), so I had to stop, shut off the phone and put the skins on. Now they have to dry for 24 hrs. I miss my Droid already.

Steps To Install Swype Beta For SmokedGlass ROM Users:

Steps To Install Swype Beta For SmokedGlass ROM Users:

1. You will need Root Explorer and Astro

2. Go to the phone menu and go to Applications

3. Next, go to Manage applications and click the menu button on the phone

4. Choose Filter and then choose All

5. Uninstall everything in there that has Swype (even the beta installer for those that installed it already and didn't work)

6. After uninstalling Swype, open Astro

7. Click on Search for Astro and type the word "Swype" (without the parenthesis) in the search box

8. Next, click on the Show Advanced Options below the box

9. Click on the drop-down arrow to change which directory in which it will search

10. Choose "/" instead of the current "/sdcard/"

11. Put a check mark on the boxes "Include directory names" and "Search sub directories"

12. Now click on the magnifying glass icon to search

13. After a couple of seconds it will list all the directories where it has Swype files (remember all of those since you would want to delete all of those files)

14. Now, open Root Explorer (I suggest Root Explorer because you can mount and unmount from there) and go to each directory that lists all the Swype files that you need to delete (the ones you found from Astro)

15. After you have deleted everything, reboot your Droid

16. Once rebooted, open your browser and go to your e-mail that you used to sign up for the beta (I just used the stock browser)

17. Click on the link to download the Swype-Installer.apk and install it

18. After it says it's done installing, on the bottom choose Open

19. After opening it, it will prompt you to enter the e-mail and password you chose when you signed up for the beta, so sign in

20. After signing in, it should automatically download the Swype.apk file and install it also

21. After installing that, Enable it so you can use Swype, but reboot first just to make sure no other problems occur after it's done installing

That should be all of it. Try it and if you have a question just post in the thread.
