Tethering - Here's why I wouldn't do it...

As I read these threads "debating tethering" I don't understand the rational behind those that seem to claim that because VZW doesn't offer tethering for their particular device, they should be able to do it for free or by using some 3rd party tool or app which makes it work.

And I don't understand the talk about smart phones are different, and Droids, Blackberries and other smart phones are all "lumped together" by VZW.

Especially when reading the TOS or T&C's for the data plans on smart phones, blackberries, droids, and even feature phones and they have the same/similar verbiage, that tethering isn't permitted unless the user subscribes to VZW's Broadband Access (BBA) or Mobile Broadband Connect (MBBC) plans.

I guess to me, just because VZW doesn't offer tethering or a BBA or MBBC plan for a particular device, or class of device, doesn't make it "OK" or "justified" to go against what is clearly written in the TOS or T&C's signed by the customer.

then don't, I'm not trying to convince you to start tethering, but the 'non-tethering group' sure is trying to convince those that do to stop.

$18k bill
you'll be cancelled and have to pay ETF
the boogie man is real
you're ruining it for the rest of us
you get what you deserve....

I can't remember anyone is this thread telliing people not to tether. My message is, if you tether you might not want to go too crazy on the bandwidth because Verizon has shown that it will charge by the KB for unauthorized tethering. That being said, do what you like!

Encrypted proxy would hide tethering from Verizon.

Yes, I am one who has pointed out what VZW's written and posted TOS/T&C says.

Is that telling people to stop?

I think its more letting people know what VZW has in writing so that they can make an informed decision.

Is that wrong?

I'm sure you'd say I'm "fear mongering" because I posted two links of stories... one which I poorly researched and turned out to be false, and the other which turned out to not be, as examples of possibilities. But they were BB users (which has the SAME clause in their TOS as Droid data plans do) who tethered, not android users.

Is it unreasonable for me to say I don't understand why some in these threads (maybe not you in particular), who DO appear to have that feeling of entitlement towards tethering even though VZW's TOS is expressly against it?

im NOT rooted but i "easy tether" on my phone, i dont use it that much, only when or if my power goes out and if i need it i will use it. like if its in the market, i say its legit to use. and where does it say where we cannot tether on the vzw website?

^^In the Mobile Broadband Connect Terms of Service...

Yea, A thread like this is not fearmongering...its informing ppl...maybe someone who does go crazy with tethering might think twice. And maybe they will say so what...whatever. But for the folks that dont actually know, it helps them. Ignorance isnt always bliss when dealing with major corporations.

I like one of the comments posted on the Boston Globe site:
Here's what the Verizon spokesliar should have said: “Bills of this nature are quite common rare given our policy of obfuscation and complexity in price plan details at the point of sale and even more indecipherable doubletalk in our confirmation letters, making it impossible for the customer to know what he is buying or how much it will cost. This combination of convolution, inflexibility, and technological jargon serves us well, since most customers just shut up and pay the bill.

Verizon has finally forgiven the $18k bill...

So there ya go, tether all you want.
Seriously, if you just tether here and there when you need to, no biggie. Consistently use 50GBs a month and you may just get a larger than expected bill.
You apparently are not old enough to understand credit.

Yeah he may not have to pay that $18,000 but that's the end of his credit for the foreseeable future. Settlements are usually not a good mark on your credit report. Especially an $18,000 settlement.

Are you not old enough to understand sarcasm? And this won't be on his credit report much longer. But you would know that if you understood credit.

7 years from time of settlement.... but who cares? Credit repairs itself and the money you spend (due to a lower credit score) is still less than 18K

So that settles it for you? 7 years of bad credit and all the worry and effort that goes into settling is no big deal?
