Update Radio to Newest Version (does NOT require root)

 If someone would be so kind to help out a newb with more detailed instructions on how to do the radio update (un rooted) - After reading the thread I still don't understand how to rename the download, add it to my SD Card, or add it to my root on the SD Card - Sorry

ok ill try to help you. download the dinc_ota.zip to your desktop so you know where it is. once you download the dinc_ota.zip, right click it and choose rename. just rename it 'update' because windows coputers add the file extension automatically. next, connect your droid incredible to the computer and change the mode from charge only to disk drive(on the phone, pull down the notifications bar and click where it says charge only) now two disk drives will show up. one is the phones internal memory and the other is the microsd. find out which is which.(the phones internal memory has htc sync somewhere in it. choose the drive without htc sync) now with the drive for the sd card open, simply drag the file you renamed update into the sd card.

Dinc Newbie here getting ready to do the radio update, wish me luck - Ive read all 13 pages, and I'm hoping for the best....................

Well, how did it go. The anticipation is killing me. :D

I decided to take the plunge as well. Then I rooted and loaded the SkyRaider ROM as it was getting a lot of positive reviews. Finally, I put the Kings #3 kernel on there as it's supposed to increase battery life. Everything is running pretty good. Only time will tell as far as battery life.

Where can I find that kernal? My battery is horrible and I'll try anything.

Thanks - Ok think I got it (lets hope)

The adventure is over, it appears that I did the radio update correctly although there were some tense moments as the screen looked like it was in a loop (almost pulled the battery) and then I heard the familiar "Droid" and I smiled :)
Start up looks a bit slower but all seems well thanks fotc for the help above

no problem, i was in the same place as you a few days ago.

A couple of observations since the radio update last night:

My 3G symbol (without wifi on) seems/is on all of the time now vs. before the radio update 3G symbol only came on when data was transferring (arrows up and down)

Radio signal bar is better and in checking my network dbm it has improved by 6 to 8 dbm

Initial phone start up is slower, but I do like the DROID screen during start up now so worth the slight delay :)

Question: Do you need to "unzip" the dinc_ota.zip file before dragging it onto your sd card drive?

Question: once you drag the file onto your sd card, then what do you need to do?

Original instructions say:

"2. Now boot into recovery and apply the zip.
2a. adb reboot recovery if powered up or Power + Volume Down then select Recovery.
2b. Now hit Power + Volume Up to bring up the Recovery menu.
2c. Now select apply update.zip"

When I hit the power button, the screen goes black. If I hit Volume down and then power, it just drops my volume.

Thx.

Just move it to the root of your sd card and make sure its renamed to "update.zip" and not "update.zip.zip". shutdown your phone, when you restart it hold the on and volume down at the same time and it will boot into the bootloader and it should automatically find the file and ask if you want to update just follow the directions on screen and you will be fine. It does take a bit to do it so let it get back to where it asks if you want to reboot the phone before you do anything.

do not unzip the file(i actually did this when i tried the first time).
turn the phone off once the file is on the sd card. then when you turn the phone back on hold both the power and the volue down button.
your phone will boot into the bootloader screen (it has three android robot things on the bottom) using the volume buttons to scroll up and down, highlight recovery and select it by pressing the power button once. now you will be on a screen with a red phone and a triangle with an exclamation point. press the power button and volume up button and then scroll down to ' apply update.zip' and select it. let the phone do its thing. it will reboot a couple of times. the whole process should take about 15 minutes

Kind of wondering if the radio update will still allow us to get the froyo OTA. Anybody done this and still gotten the OTA update?

I tried to do the manual OTA and it failed. I am trying to find a solution on how to rollback the radio and I will try again.
