[Update] Verizon's New Family Data Plans Begin: It's Called the Share Everything Plan

Did I read this wrong? My understanding is that Verizon thinks a family can share ten gigs?

I so don't get this. My family doesn't break 2GB, ever. Our phones use wireless at home and work and wherever else we can get it.

The pricing structure will save my family over $30/month if I plan for us to double our data usage.

For those of you breaking 10GB/month, what the frak are you doing?

I have no idea, however if any of the current phones interest you, you might be able to do an early upgrade.
It's for my parents actually. They both had OG Droids and they were curious about the iPhone so they upgraded to the iPhone 4S when they renewed their contract last fall. That has turned out to be quite a mistake since they're now locked into the 3G-only iPhones for another 12 months.

Seriously? The whole my usage is this so yours should be too routine again? I don't use my phone as home internet and I hit right around 3-4 Gigs. I'm on forums, push email, web browsing, all non intensive stuff. I just do it away from home and not around Wi-Fi. 10 gigs for a family of four would be cutting it close for many. I could certainly understand it not being enough.

4G/3G makes no difference, if you buy your new smartphone you will keep your unlimited data plan, get with the times, there is NO MORE 3G only phones on Verizon or AT&T or Sprint, withing the next 5 years , 3G will be no more, 4G LTE will be it, which will also be used for Voice and text.

I have no idea, however if any of the current phones interest you, you might be able to do an early upgrade.

First point- VZW.com is selling 3G deivces. Alot of them. Look for yourself http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...=viewPhoneOverviewByDevice&deviceCategoryId=1

Second point- you need to go 4G. 3G to 4G is a contractual change. So to stay unlimited with 4G you will need a 4G device. If you get a 3G device and then switch to 4G later you will have to change plans within the verizon system which is coded different. At all costs you do not want a 3G upgrade at this point if you want to keep your unlimited data.

I'm trying to find a silver lining in all of this. I saw the following on VZW's website:

I have an unlimited data plan on my account. Do I need to change it?

You're not required to move to Share Everything but if you do, unlimited data will not be retained on your line. As a Verizon Wireless customer you have choices when you upgrade at discounted pricing. You can choose from a standalone data package starting at $30 for 2GB or a Share Everything Plan. If keeping unlimited is important to you, you can choose to upgrade and pay full retail price for the phone.

The way I read this (which means nothing) is that we won't be forced into a plan with unlimited minutes and still have the option to keep data on a per device type plan like we have now. It's still sucks for those with unlimited data, but we all knew that was coming to the end (unless you pay full retail).

Call and see if vzw will offer you an early upgrade to 4g devices. They've been doing that alot lately... push the issues

wait, so since I have a 3G right now, even if I were to buy a 4G phone at full price I would have to change plans?

This share everything plan might actually work better for me. My hubby has just has a*basic phone and I have a the Razr Maxx. I Iike the idea of unlimited messaging and minutes on calls. I actually dont even use up 2G per month but I might just get 4G to have a comfort level. Does anyone know how I can check to see how much Gigs I use per month? I think there is a way to check on my phone but I cant find it.

Review your bill online or call vzw and ask them :)

iPhone 4S?
NO MORE NEW 3G phones, only reason the Razr Maxx is outselling the iPhone on Verizon is because the iPhone is only 3G, Verizon is not selling anymore ONLY 3G phones, only reason they took on the iPHONE when they did was just so they can get it on their network, even though it was only 3G. The iPhone is the only smartphone on any carrier that is only 3G, but that will change with the iPhone 5.

I don't think so. As long as you put a 4G phone on the line and never put a 3G phone on there again, you should remain grandfathered.

So right now I have 1 smart phone (4gigs), 2 dumb phones, unlimited text and 1400mn (with 10 free numbers). With my 20% company discount I pay around $140 per month. We never use over 600 - 700 mn per month.
New plan is $40 for smart phone + $60 for 2 dumb phones + $60 for 2gigs (all I use) + $20 in insurance for a 3 phones. Price after 20% discount would be $144 per month.

New plan is about the same price. I get unlimited calls but loose 2 gigs a month. I would rather have the 2 gigs! That's the hole point here. Every one uses gigs and text and don't talk no more. They are going to make you pay one way or the other.

I don't break 10GB a month but you also have to realize there are many people out there that...

-Don't have easy access to wifi at home or out and about
-Use their smartphones and data plans for everything. They might not have broadband. Yes there are many places that don't
-Can't afford to have a $30 data plan and a $50+ broadband bill

Any of those will easily rack up 10GB a month

The impending new plan only benefits people who are talkoholics and textoholics. If use you any data then the new plan will be a problem.

funny, I pay 250 a month for 1400 minutes 5 lines three smart phones, two with unlimited one with 2gb, TEC on 3 of my phones, two feature phones, unlimited messaging. now for the same amount I can get unlimited minutes and messaging and shared data? no thank you vzw, you must think I'm a complete idiot. I could get less than 4gb... problem is I always use MORE than 2gb on my unlimited plans and my 2gb capped phone definitely uses it all.

I'm not sure what idiot ceo/cfo/hot shot, EVER thought plans like this were a good idea, but they aren't. they are essentially limiting our data even more then throwing more data eating bloatware garbage on our phones AND telling use we can't unlock the bootloader. I mean seriously how much longer will everyone take this. Maybe we need to #OccupyVZW

the problem is people are going to look at this and go, YAY unlimited minutes... I use less than 700 minutes a month, mostly because of friends and family, without it I'd use closer to 1400 problem is I CANNOT get friends and family on a 700 minute plan, so I pay the extra it's not that big a deal. But to have my data limited so much when I bought a smartphone because of the web and email capabilities, not to mention netflix, hulu, youtube, pandora and all the other data intensive apps I use. I'd be paying easily 90+ more per month then my current plan.

they can give unlimited minutes across the board now? why because minutes don't take that much and basically that tech has more than payed for itself. so now what? we pay an arm and a leg so they can roll 4g out quicker? I'd be happy to stay on 3g if it meant this BS wasn't around.

here's hoping AT&T's lte network has good coverage cause if vzw keeps this garbage up and keeps screwing their customer base while playing nice to the face of all the lemmings out there I'm going to leave on principle, which is sad cause I've been with them since my mom bought her first airtouch cellular plan.

it's disgusting, honestly the customers definitely don't come first.

The thing for Verizon is if you get a phone for $200 subsidy they lose money. So if you buy the same phone outright for $600 then they make $400. $400 divided by 12 (months) is $34 dollars. So in essence they are making an additional $34 a month off you from the outright price you just paid. Alot of people will just pay the subsidized price and go tiered
