[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

Time to switch to sprint then. Verizon just keeps getting more and more expensive. Greedy bastards. They will loose a bunch of customers over this.

4G speed that never dulls?
or Unlimited data?

can't have both. and that's the kicker. never did Verizon promise full speed with unlimited data ( unless I'm missing something in the ToS )
it's a luxury we've been afforded as they tried their best not to put a crutch on things. but it is what it is.

which one would you give up?

I'm giving up neither one.I'm grandfathered into unlimited and I've never been throttled.what it is with U people? Have u been completely brainwashed by Verizon? What's wrong with me having unlimited un throttled 4g? I pay for it. In your mind set, how exactly WOULD it be possible to have unlimited un throttled 4g? It's just impossible? Wtf lol

So your solution is that they throttle everyone because it wouldn't affect you? Wow...

Actually I think you are the reason we are in this position, if you are one of the ones using ridiculous amounts of data.

I had an 'unlimited' 3g data card and I have been throttled... But it wasn't even .5... Try .2 mb. With 4g they probably wouldn't need to throttle it that much... They could reasonably throttle it to 1.5 or 3mb, which would be a tight throttle, but still reasonable speed for most web stuff except like netflix. On the flipside they kinda shoot themselves in the foot when they preload blockbuster streaming app... ??? I don't think they should preload such apps then threaten to take away the unlimited data...its the old bait and switch, which is very unprofessional.

And for the record, I'm not necessarily pro caps/throttles per se, however if 1% is using 90% of the resources, its not fair to everyone else is the speeds start suffering (which obviously isn't an issue right now on 4g bit definitely will be someday... Look how bad 3g got). I think a simple compromise along the lines of what I suggested would be reasonable. Sure the top 1% abusers who are bit torrenting and whatnot won't like it, but they would keep the other 99% happy.

The other side of the coin though is I don't trust them to make a decision that is even as reasonable as that I proposed.

I am fortunate in a way as I just got my Rzr a couple months ago and I can keep my unlimited plan until 2014 and watch what comes out in the wash over that time period. My wife's new Rzr in on the 2gb plan though and she is not a heavy user.

I do have a problem with Vz whinning (and that's the correct term if you have ever read their releases on the subject) about their data being sucked up so exponentially fast and how expensive it is, Then they preload multiple, uninstallable data hog apps on all their phones going out the door. That just not make any sense at all. Make up your mind VZ...

Just a thought: When we didn't need unlimited data a few years ago they gave it to us. Now that we need it they are taking it away from us... To quote an earlier post: "Well poopie!"

I've never seen a contract that guarantees you full, unthrottled speed and unlimited data. If you have one that says that, post a scan please. I was of your mindset when I first got my 3g unlimited data card (like 2 days before they dropped it)... Then my speeds started to degrade over time, thanks to people like you. So now, I have a much more tolerant view of caps and throttle limits, as long as they are reasonable and o.ly affect the worst abusers.

How will this affect my mobile hot spot?

I would imagine the same as a phone... Their goal is to end unlimited plans altogether so they very well may try to force you into tiered data too if you want to upgrade at a discount. You should be fine as long as you don't get an upgrade that is discounted like a normal 2 yr contract. Just IMO.

One member here just trying to tease you, that's not what's matter anyways, so please focus on what matter the most. @ Ben you maybe like me and be joyful about it, but remember every actions have a reaction and there are no guarantee for Verizon to keep their promise m8. It would be far worse if one of my scenarios happens in the future. That is buying full retail phone and paying shared Data too in the future. ATT tried this method of throttling with their so called "Unlimited" data plan and AT&T got sued. I don't like it, but better this way as I can see around what they offer in their data sharing thing. I'm not interested in buying phones anyways as I did it due to incentives made by Verizon.

No offense monkey man.that wasn't directed toward u

"So when you think about our 3G base, a lot of our 3G base is unlimited," he added. "As they start to migrate into 4G, they will have to come off of unlimited and go into the data share plan. And that is beneficial for us for many reasons, obviously."

From the original story/transcript. Just amazing how balls out his statement here is. A thinly-veiled "we're going to stick it to our customers and make lots of money doing it." When I get the time to delve in perhaps I will, but I doubt anywhere did he say anything along the lines of, "we will continue to aid customers who want the best phones at lower prices by offering subsidies and as a fair and intelligent measure we will see returns on this investment faster by moving them to tiered data plans." I understand that money needs to be made, but I guess despite its size VZ used to give a better feeling than Exxon Mobil or various cut-throat finance companies. I guess I'm also used to having family members working at upper managment levels who actually give two craps about the people working for them and their customers.

B.S. on corporations being people, too; they're freaking vampires.

I can't believe we are fighting about petty things . I understood your anger and frustration Ben, but if you do love it? Why don't you keep it discreet? What you been saying is ain't new, and loads of members know this without typing and gloating over it. :icon_ lala:.

What I wonder now is how can Iphone users not barking mad? Since they are the one that capable to see things through. Verizon still win on this as they can still stop current Iphone users from going to 4G without getting limited to Data Tier as they can't move from 3G to 4G. On the other hand, I can move to Iphone 5 without getting limitation as I've been on 4G. I hate Apple tho dancedroid.

Now, I did some quick calculation and I won't go through detail about my plan. This is just from a feeling of peace and what can cost me in the future. This is based on their rate for 10GB @ 80 dollars and $10/GB over. I really hope their family plan be better than what they offer now.

Like I said before, I would be ok with $30 @5GB. With 10GB, it costs $10 more than what I hoped for. This would be different if they are doing it @ 20GB, as I would move and get subsidized phone +NE2 Program is back. The more smartphones you have within your family plan, then their new plan benefits you most sin Unlimited data users tho.

I can hold off my OG Droid for 5 years, but had to let go in 4 with Bionic (was big disappointment for me) due to their new July 2011 Policy.

So I know I can save alot of money with a peace of mind too with my current plan when I can hold off buying new phone every 5 years instead of 2 years. For me, $700-$1000 for latest release be too exorbitant for me. I have to adjust. Instead of getting Galaxy S5, I will be getting S3 as that phone be cheaper for me to get and still be faster than my Razr Maxx at that time. I hope I don't break the phone tho , or that would be a drastic change of plan for me.

You guys should get a job at Verizon.or Apple.they love close-minded people. You talk about how much you love the freedom of Android yet you get mad when people use a lot of data.there's only a small amount of us grandfathered into unlimited so we could use as much as we want and not cause a strain on 4g. I can't believe I guys are throwing a hissy fit about people using lots of data. I use less than 5 gigs sooooo every one should have to! I'll use an extra 50 gigs this month just 4I.bet it Ur not even grandfathered in. u prolly HAVE to use less than 5 gigs

And you wonder why they want to bump us all off unlimited plans? You need to get off your high horse. You obviously do not realize that broadband, especially wireless, is a scarce resource. No one is suggesting you have to use less than 5 gb. You can use it all you want, as it is unlimited. But don't be surprised when they start throttling your behind so you aren't affecting my ability to browse. And honestly if they start getting poor network performance on 4g because of people like you, YOU will be the reason we all get throttled, not us who use a normal amount. It's the top 5% users who caused unlimited to go bye bye, not the rest of us.
