[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

Question: we have 4 phones on our plan, 3 smartphones and 1 flip phone. If I wanted to keep my unlimited data, would I be able to use one of the other phones upgrades and keep it that way? Would they know if one of the other lines upgraded and I took the phone and stuck my LTE card in?

Are you kidding me? Here's my story if anyone cares. I live in Casper Wyoming, and I live outside of the town. For the last 5 years, I have been desperately needing internet. I can't get Cable, DSL, you name it. The only thing I can get: Satellite internet. The local company only works half the year(In the winter their towers "Magically" stop working), And the other option is Hughes Net. I'm currently on Hughes Net, Which I pay a RIDICULOUS amount of money for. All that money for internet that is about the same as verizons 1x. Oh, thats at stop speeds by the way. When I go over my daily limit (1.2Gigs), It maxes out at maybe 10Kb/s. Why does this make me mad? Recently Ive been using my Droid x2 to use 3g tether. Going over 5gb a month, by using it for school work, and other things, I have been under "Network Optimization" for the last few months. What makes no sense? The 3g tower I connect to is about 3 miles further away from me. Away from the town. It is possible I am the only one using over 1Gb a month on this tower. "Network Optimization" occurs when you are in the top 5% of users on A SPECIFIC CELL TOWER. Hmm.. Isnt that odd? Now, because the tower is magically congested 24/7, I am unable to use my 3g at ALL. Getting max download speeds of maybe 5Kb/s If i'm lucky. So, Just today I was notified that Verizon placed the first 4g tower in Sheridan, Wyoming. What?? Sheridan, Wyoming? Yep. They chose a town with not even 18,000 people, over the biggest towns in Wyoming. For the last year, Ive been awaiting 4g service here in Casper. But now without Unlimited Data for 4g, What use is it? I guess here is Verizons message to everyone: Thank you everyone for using our 3g service for the last few years. Especially those of you who have been under Network Optimization. And now, for our most recent upgrade, we are going to spend millions/billions of dollars on our new 4g Lte service. But wait, We are also going to be forcing you all who rely on our service to purchase a limited data plan so we can take your money! In other words, we are going to be removing our $30 all you can eat buffet, and replace it with $80 for 10 plates of food. Oh, and every other plate of food will cost you extra money! Enjoy! Love, Verizon. :hail:

If this were the case, strictly speaking, then wouldn't the carriers stop pushing the high bandwidth consuming apps like NFL, Netflix, Blockbuster, VCast, or whatever else they are pushing now-a-days? As many have said, they tell us they are charging more and capping our usage with overages because the "network is overloaded" but at the same time are pushing these data hogs for which they are taking a cut of the subscription fees... and it just so happens that these apps they push congest their networks giving a justification for charging more for bandwidth.

Have you ever watched the tv series M*A*S*H? Alan Alda summed it up very nicely: "What are the 3 biggest motivations of man?"
1. Greed.
2. Fear.
3. Greed.

(Sorry, cynicism is running a little rampant tonight.)

Can we lock this thread now?

Not yet. Lets see how many don't read the op post and continue on with their rant. I'm just curious how many people are really paying attention to this thread.

Just left Verizon, the rep knew absolutely nothing about any of this! Of course, he hadn't heard of the S3 or Note/Journal either:icon_eek:

By the way, I read it all and I know the update. If I have to pay full price for a phone anyway, I might as well go Straight Talk for alot less money per month. Besides, more outrage might convince Sprint to never lose unlimited.

Just saw this over on XDA. The best part: "In response to the rather vocal outcries of many of its subscribers on the web." It's nice to see that our voices are heard. Honestly there's no way to know at this point but I wonder what would have happened if everyone had kept quiet like good little sheep? This works fine anyway, perfectly fine with buying my new phone outright.

Is anyone really surprised by this? I would have been shocked if they did know about it.

Already added my 2 pennies worth, so now a point to ponder.
Knowing Verizon back pedalled for the time being (my guess is this summer)
Verizon could let us keep unlimited forever with or without new phones and just upping the price til that 5 gig at 30 dollars sounds alot better than unlimited for 50.
The decision would be totally consumer based.

Living on the Razr's edge, "strop" aside

I just left Verizon with a new RAZR maxx and kept my unlimited. The rep knew about the change and said it will go through as early as next month. I decided not wait that long and just upgraded now.
