[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

This is going to be a net win for VZW customers. I'll bet more customers come out ahead with the family share plans than individuals "losing" their precious unlimited data. Probably 95% of users don't hit 4gigs, anyway. So there's not going to be a mass exodus of customers to "punish" VZW. That's a pipe dream.

I bet your right..... I know for a fact I can minimize my data use by just connecting to wifi..... hopefully they come with good prices with this.... oh wait it's Verizon! !!!

That's right! After all we all now know that VZ will set pricing that is "beneficial for [them] for many reasons, obviously" (I really don't have to credit that quote do I?).

LOL...they'll cut prices on family share plans and make more money. It's not rocket science. OF COURSE prices are going to offer value. If they didn't, there's really no reason to break from the standard $30 individual pricing.

I think they should just pool all data into 1 basket. With fair pricing...

Maybe something like this:
$20 - upto 4gb total data used
$30 - 4gb - 6gb total data used
$40 - 6gb - 8gb total data used
$50 - 8gb - 10gb total data used
Then $10/gb after the 10gb max

And, you shouldn't have to commit to a plan. You should just pay for what you use...
My family has 4 phones on 'unlimited data', and got in on the $9.99/mo/phone plan.
So, we are paying $40/mo and we use between 7gb & 10gb a month.
Bionic, D4, DX, D2. I would guess I'd go up 1gb or 2gb when the other 2 phones go 4g

If this is per account and not line, I'm golden. We have 4 lines @ $30 each. That's $120/mo just for data!

We're using less than 4GB TOTAL right now. I'll either bet getting a ton of data or saving a ****load of money.

Just hoping that if i get kicked off my unlimited and have to pay more for a SET plan then i dont want to be throttled.

I imagine their family share plans will be something like:
$20 for 2gigs (if they even offer such a plan, doubtful).
$30 for 4gigs
$50 for 10gigs

+ $10 for each device on the plan. $10/gig overages.

For families paying $30 for each data plan, they might get 10gigs for $90 (vs. $120 for 4 users, they lose a few gigs but probalby don't use/need it).
If you have a phone and tablet, you might be paying $60 for 8gigs and now pay $60 for 10gigs.

These plans are only good for you guys who barely use your phones data. What happens if someone uses 40 gigs? According to you guys they should get a$300 overage fee

This is not a "net win" for customers at all. Will they save a little green? Maybe, but the listed plans I've seen seem to be giving VZ way too much credit. I bet these plans end up "saving" people 10 dollars a month.

Verizon doesn't care if those who are grandfathered avoid these plans (by paying full retail) because they lose money every time you upgrade but just lock you into a 2 year contract. The only downside to VZ for this is that those who want to keep unlimited by any means will simply be month to month (once their contract expires).

Verizon will more than make up that "loss" with the data overages they'll receive or they'll save by forcing those that have been moved to the data share to be more frugal with their data use.

I doubt their pricing will be that good, I hope it is but I guess we have to wait and see.

If they are charging $120 for a family of four they don't want it to cost them too much money. I think they understand that there are customers like me who will add a line and go to the family data if it is priced right (wife is no longer with VZW due to data cost etc).

Remember when they did the math getting rid of the unlimited plan they charged the same price for the max that the average user used (2GB). IMO they shot themselves on that one, it should have been at least 4GB for $30 since it was unlimited before.

I assume they are trying to do a bunch of math and figure out how to add lines and not lose too many customers. I don't care what they do, any change will cause some to jump ship.

If it is 4GB+ for $30-$40 family share I will bring my wife back to VZW, if it is more than that she will stay where she is. Once my contract is up if they force me off unlimited I will proceed to sell my perfect condition Rezound and get a Contract free Samsung to use with T-Mobile and probably go with their $60 unlimited (2GB un-throttled) that will save me about $40 a month and I will still have 90% of the service quality I have now.

I guarantee if enough people drop their service they will rethink this!

Why would someone want to be using 40 gb or more on a cellphone ?

Though I've never used close to that much, it'd be rather easy to do. Say you're on a long roadtrip and the two kids in the backseat are driving you nuts. Get them some Netflix going and some peace of mind for yourself and you'll burn through data incredibly easily.

If you look at voice plans, there's no real savings for just 2 on a plan. But with 4 you're saving $20 or more a month. $250 a year is not insignificant for a lot of families. Again, this new plan is not going to affect the majority of users. Some families will see decent savings. A "few people" using their phones like home internet will lose out. VZW and their customers will be net winners, and nobody really cares about the very small % (less than 2%) that will be losers.

wow. what a nice post.and they say there's no more decent people in the world anymore

Nobody really cares about the 2%.... Minorities don't matter at all apparently. Forget about them u say
