[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

I was upgrading with my mother today at Verizon store in Commons Mall in NJ and I asked the sales rep about the elimination of grandfathered 3G plans and she told me "just talk of it nothing conclusive yet"... right from the horse's mouth nothing to confirm/deny won't know anything for a while. Fortunately mother and I were able to upgrade to RAZR Maxx 4G unlimited. Do it if you're up for upgrade while you still have a chance!

This made me LOL. What a Verizon rep says is about the furthest thing from being "straight from the horse's mouth".

The horse has already said this would happen. And yes as of now you can still upgrade without losing unlimited data because the data share hasn't gone into effect.

Yes, for whatever reason VZ seems to enjoy keeping their reps in the dark about any and everything going on within the company.

Agreed. I usually know more about what is happening than any rep. Last time I went in there, they told me to quote, "keep up on the forums and blogs."

Straight off my hip from the Maxx

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: We ARE BUNCH OF MULES... Sadly... We got Played by Verizon :icon_ devil:. Nice marketing scheme by Verizon tho to jolt their slow arse Verizon stores ..... We are too comfy with our Unlimited Data plan complemented by pretty reliable OG Droids and Droid Xs in our hand ( I know I can held off my Droid 1 for at least 5 years, unlike my BB Storm). Sadly, other Carriers do not enjoy a plan like ours. We as Verizon members vouched for Verizon and how great of a company they are... We took pride and to borderline gloating! What makes it worse? AT&T with their evil plan still raked in more profits, in BILLIONS of Dollars! How can you as a telco competitor not envy with that kind of return? Very Nice! Verizons are now copying ATT by raking tons of money from our Fear! You know what? Their strategy of limiting what we can do in the future is working very well! I upgraded my phone when they sent out the notice on July 2011 (The end of New every Two program and the start of Tiered data for new users past that deadline). What kinda special deal of Double your Data since then ey? That gimmick runs dry every day! They got no new smartphones customers!!!!!! people are not that dumb of actually waiting for a Limited Data plan LoL. Apparently, Verizon just catching on. Well then how the heck should they get some nice money flowing to their bank again? (Like some members posted here earlier) By Kicking our Behind... just like a Jack Ass). Verizon lol ... equal to Lord Voldermorth! I thought they should be happy with no late payments for a decade from me ... sigh.... greedy and seedy corporation now :icon_evil:. Don't do Jack squat is what I say... as the more we cave in ... the more we give ideas n confidence to Verizon's board member that their Fear Tactic is creating Gold Rush! If they changed their mind in the future about our ability to keep our Unlimited Data Plan, then I'll change my 2 smartphones to basic phone! I highly doubt their family plan benefits me. If they don't make a plan worth $30 for 10 Gigs, then bye bye Smartphones :). For some people.. what the heck 10 Gigs... are you out of your mind!!!!! Think folks.. their new proposal is about a shared Data Plan!!!!!!! Shared with how many smartphones in your Family plan..... Ok! It will cost you more instead of save you money! More likely scenario for me... $50 for 4GB (Basic data plan) with $10/ extra 1 GB :) ... Money Money Money.... they need More Money to find New Planet :p:p:p:p:p.

Nobody really cares about the 2%.... Minorities don't matter at all apparently. Forget about them u say

Unprofitable or much less profitable customers, yes. No one forces you to do business with VZW. They seem to know how to run their business and consistently rate #1 in service and have like 100M subscribers, so they clearly are doing something rright. Money talks, you-know-what walks.

Verizon offers top of the line service reliability for voice and data. That means they continuously spend money on upgrading & expanding their network to make sure we have consistent service. That costs money and any business in that position is going to see were they are losing money and fix it (aka grandfathered unlimited plans). Complain all you want but I've been with T Mobile, AT&T, & Sprint and they all suck compared to Verizon...you can switch all you want but you'll be back and gladly PAY MORE for reliable service!

:p We all know we have the brain to decide what to do with our phone bills and choose what benefit individual's taste (similar to Iphone Vs Android pros n cons, there will always fanboys). I don't think without proof of where you been in contract with for your previous wireless contracts, all claims are invalid. What am sure is that Verizon (Just like many carriers) are missing that extra money coming from fining customers who's over their intended usage limit. So many Carriers services are highly cut back due to Internet Reformation, these services may include texting, Video Mail, SMS, and etc. How can they recoup these loses? Internet use Data... with so many new applications that allow users to omit these paid services, there are an explosion of Data usage. By limiting how much datas users can use, believe you me, there are many teenagers that will go over the limit (tho some adults may too :)). These fines become more of a profit for such carriers. The nail bitter for Verizon? With more of a level playing field between phone carriers, users are now freely choose what they like where before they (we) had been cocoon/babied by Verizon. 2 Years contract seems longer for these carriers than us. They need money to maintain their towers, and without customers sticking with them for about 2 years will hurt. We may comeback to Verizon (if there are no new changes) So what? We always feel comfortable with something we tried ourselves anyways right? :icon_ lala:

I agree, it is what it is. People are using more and more data all the time, and the cost of providing that with new networks, new towers and technology increases. When they offered Unlimited, how much could the average user actually consume? Now that everyone and their grandmother is using a smartphone and soaking up considerable bandwidth, Unlimited is no longer profitable, so they get rid of it. People under contract should keep it but only until their contract is up. Once your 2 year contract is up, that's it. You are not entitled to anything beyond that, and if Unlimited has gone away, or prices have increased, too bad.

I don't see why anyone thinks that they are owed Unlimited Data forever once their contract has run out. On what basis? If you ran a business, and your costs kept going up every year, wouldn't your prices have to adjust? Maybe you take on a landscaping client and you "lock in their price" with a 2 year contract. But after that runs out, you can apply the new pricing and they have to decide to either accept that or go somewhere else. But once their 2 year contract is up, can they demand that you keep charging them the old rates forever, despite what your costs are?

Of course not.

For the most part, the people crying the most are the ones soaking up massive bandwidth, as they are the only ones that this will impact, and they are the ones that have been bragging for years about how much data they consume. Well guess what, you had your fun, you used and abused it and VZW and other carriers have changed the plans. Most people have a smartphone and use a sensible amount of data. I am not saying that people are wrong to use 30GB a month, although I think it is crazy to be that "into your phone" that you need that much, but just like the guy eating 9 plates of food at Golden Corral, it is your right to do so I guess. Until your contract runs out, and then you have to look at what the new prices are and decide.

But this crying and whining about how you want Unlimited data forever is just silly. Once your contract is up, they owe you no more Unlimited Data. Just because you want it, doesn't mean that they owe it to you.

And for the record, I would love to have Unlimited Data for $30. It's not like I don't want it. I am just realistic and understand that my wanting it doesn't mean I should get it. I want a lot of things that I will never get. LOL

If I sign a contract for 2 years and it says Unlimited, then I should keep it until the contract is up. After that, they owe me nothing. I have a choice of whether or not to do business with them.

Prices go up, it's life. Look at the motorcycle industry... prices are through the roof. Because sales and revenue are down, the Japanese manufacturers are simply jacking the prices up to make up for the lower volume. A Suzuki GSX-600 is now over $12k! A few years ago 600's were going for $8k. They went up 50% in about 5 years, for bikes that are only a couple HP more than before. Small incremental increases and yet they cost 50% more? But guess what? It you want a new one, that's what they cost. If you don't want to pay it, look elsewhere, but you don't have the right to demand that they sell you the new bike for 2008 prices because "that's what I used to pay and I deserve to keep paying that until I decide not to"... LOL

The business world just doesn't work that way...

 hehe let's call it what it really is shall we? Phone carriers refused to become sheeps. Verizon have always been a premium company. They cost above their competitors. Why? Features, coverage, and unlimited data. For many users that are with Verizon, I don't think the focus is how much money should we pay to have these things. But why many companies now eliminated Unlimited features? UK telco companies never had this imaginary network congestions. Heck they offer much cheaper plan with blazing speed (Unlimited too). So why a sovereign country like ours are copying China and limiting what we can use? Heres what supposed to be the real reason.

1. IP Companies are pressured by MPAA N RIAA to stop the bleeding of copyright violations.

2. Companies that used major data usage like Apple iTunes, Netflix, google clouds, etc became multi-billion worth companies without giving some payshare to ISP Companies that gave them pathway to success.

Well you know what Google pass the anti trust hearing in China to buy Motorola. Well I can hope by wait n see if I can see competition between google n apple to provide us wireless spectrums in the future. I can't wait to dump these narrow minded egotesticle wireless carriers and waves them goodbye. I hope they don't start occupying against the much lesser 1% when they lose their job.

What is sad.... they want us to cut back on data usage - but are eliminating the 3g phones.... and eventually will do the same for basic phones.... My husband DID NOT want a smart phone. He had a couple year old basic phone, but all the new ones were even worse - he wanted to upgrade his camera.... So now he is using my old Droid X......

Another thought... when they started the unlimited plan - it was on way old phones.... mine was the Alias 1 - talk about using a lot of data.... LOL it was so slow....

How about upgrading from my Droid X - my razr is twice as fast so I can do a lot more.... not that my data usage is fast.... We also live in a 3g area that will NEVER be 4g. Our towers are owned by AT&T..... :(

That's an interesting point too.

YouTube, Netflix, etc... All these companies that make a ton of money streaming massive bandwidth content, which hits the carriers network hard with no penalty to them. VZW and others see this massive increase in bandwidth used, for services that don't make them a dime. It just taxes their network while those other companies rake in the cash because they don't have to provide the infrastructure to deliver the content. I mean they have to host it and all, but the actual path it takes to get to our devices is a massive expense that the carrier has to provide, not them.

So like the old all you can eat analogy... that is profitable when you know that only a certain percentage of your customers will truly pig out and eat more than the average share... But when pigging out is what the majority of your clients start doing, at some point that business model no longer makes sense. It's great for the gluttons, but not so much for the guy running the joint. At some point he has to decide... keep the current pricing and hope you stay in business, or increase prices or move to a more traditional "tiered" menu where each person pays for what they eat.

The fatties eating all the food will of course cry and complain about how unfair it is that they have to start paying for what they eat, but they don't really have much of a leg to stand on. They can choose to pig out somewhere else if they way, but the pricing is what it is.
