[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

These phones are not made by Verizon, so phone contents can't be restricted to their likings. What made it worse for phone carriers is the fact that users can modify phone and installed apks outside the Market Nucleus (where they can regulates illegal apps that may hurt carriers). Now just like drugs, such actions are very contagious. How can Verizon do then? Let's regulate it. Installed it to the OS that will frustrate costumers at first. But once you are hooked and sink in to the goodness. Pow! They are starting to charge these data junkies. I'll be honest that I need a rehab! :icon_ devil:.

@ SquireSca

Yes we can determine how much a car cost ( ask many American cars :happy3:). Every cars have their base price, once they go to dealerships, the price varies. Those variation is where costumers negotiatiate with dealers to get a win win solution. I bought new cars through negotiating. A negotiation where I feel happy with my purchase (I don't even care if you can get lower value than me), and these dealers can still survive. Also, they better hear what we want. Because unlike many foreign countries, they are getting business tax break.

If you don't purchase you phone at bonafide B&M store, then you will not get extra insurance coverage. With Ebay for an example, you will either get as is, 7 days, 14 days, or 30 days return.

@ bullit

Yeah the OP of this site had been updated with the link that you gave as soon as Verizon released their statement.

You can buy extended insurance outside on the cell stores... as a matter of fact the stand alone insurance companies have better and less expensive policies.

Like I stated before. You can get insurance when you buy from Buy.com, Amazon, Bestbuy, Cell Hut, and etc. But I don't know that there are insurance companies willing to risk covering phones from a reg guy selling "Retail price like" phone on Ebay. If they do exist, then I feel more relieved. Good to know! :icon_ lala: :hail:

I emailed a phone insurance company once to ask if they insured phones bought off ebay, they said they did as long as you had a receipt. I can't seem to find the email and don't remember the company name since I didn't end up buying the phone. I found them on the internet though.

Found it right after posting. Company is "Safeware" . The email says if you have a paypal receipt, they insure your smartphone.

SquareTrade.com has been offering insurance on eBay items for many many years... They also offer extended warranties on other retail and non retail equipment, at a lower cost than what you would pay Best Buy or other retail establishments

If this is going down like many of us believe it will, there's a new market burgeoning with the second hand phone and insurance. I know eBay and Craigslist are big but I think that's just the beginning.

It is not much different than when Cingular bought out AT&T and back... if you wanted to keep your AT&T plan (more mins less money) you had to buy phones off eBay, craigslist etc. There was no option to buy at full price, they would make you switch to a current plan, so eBay and such was the only option.

I really think people get worked up over the lil things before they even know what is going to come about. Change is never fun but it is growth. This change may favor some people as well.

I suppose, but for the life of me I cant see how this would favor anyone. Yes data sharing sure, but being forced to tiered when you were on unlimited no

This is going to be a net win for VZW customers. I'll bet more customers come out ahead with the family share plans than individuals "losing" their precious unlimited data. Probably 95% of users don't hit 4gigs, anyway. So there's not going to be a mass exodus of customers to "punish" VZW. That's a pipe dream.
I think VZW says 95% are at 2GB. But still, it will be a net win for some, a net loss for others.

Though I've never used close to that much, it'd be rather easy to do. Say you're on a long roadtrip and the two kids in the backseat are driving you nuts. Get them some Netflix going and some peace of mind for yourself and you'll burn through data incredibly easily.
+1 although my kids don't drive me too nutty!

I stream a ton of music from Google Music, Pandora, Tune In and Radio.com and don't even come close to 2 GB.
Goodness. If I use Google Music to stream my trance music podcasts, my usage skyrockets up. The first time I used GM, after 2 weeks I was at 2GB. This is just using some in the car 20-30 minutes each way for work, about 3 -4 times a week. At the end of the month it was close to 5gb.

If I don't use GM, my usage is low. I don't know what music you are streaming. I've reduced my GM usage and listing more to DI Radio again

So you telling me there is no other way to keep your brats quiet or occupied, wonder what parents did 20-30 years ago when there was no such thing as portable media devices, oh yea, a kick in the rear end.

not every kid is the same. That comment is like saying "I use less than 1GB, Why cannot everyone else use that little." It doesn't work. His kids could be autistic and need stimulation, his kids could just be used to electronics. his kids just like electronics, etc.

I was upgrading with my mother today at Verizon store in Commons Mall in NJ and I asked the sales rep about the elimination of grandfathered 3G plans and she told me "just talk of it nothing conclusive yet"... right from the horse's mouth nothing to confirm/deny won't know anything for a while. Fortunately mother and I were able to upgrade to RAZR Maxx 4G unlimited. Do it if you're up for upgrade while you still have a chance!

my mom did the same thing the same day, although she came from a feature phone. I should have convinced her to take my Dinc2... bleh.

Lol Why did Verizon :icon_ devil: charge us $30 if they keep their reps "in the dark" ... Unfreakingbelievable!!!!!
They need the upgrade fee to train THEM!!!! not us.

But if VZW truly feels that these apps over tax their network, they should stop pre-loading the customer's food tray (phone) with an 18 oz steak (V CAST Video, Blockbuster, GoToMeeting, Netflix, NFL Mobile, Slacker) before they even have a chance to go get the stuff they want.
Preach on brother, preach on!!!

:hail::hail::hail::hail::hail::hail:

more like a 18MB steak. they can take Slacker, Netflix, VCast, Blockbuster (are theys till around other than the kiosks?) off my phone.

SquareTrade will. That is the only time they insure used items, from Ebay.

Couldn't alternate upgrades/adding a line bypass this problem? The way it sounds, simple esn changes don't remove you from unlimited, it just changes when the upgrade is done. So add a line, the line gets tiered, then do an esn change and put the new phone on your unlimited line and put a dummy esn or feature phone on the new line. Basically it'll mean that unlimited went up $10 in price.

My brother has a 3G phone. He has been eligible for an upgrade for a couple months now; but, he is training with the Army right now. I am going to visit him at the end of May...that would be a good time to upgrade to a new 4G phone & lock-in the unlimited. Hopefully they don't introduce the new policy before then!
