[Updated] Verizon To Officially Reveal Tiered Data Plans July 7th; Plans Leaked Below

Looking at the grand scheme of things.....the reality as i see it.

This is NOT about the "tetherers". It's VZW making the mighty dollar. It's THEIR system and towers. The "amount of data" someone uses isn't crap to them. It doesn't cost Verizon no more weather i use 1GB or 20GB. Your monthly payment is all "capital gain" after employee salaries and system maintenaince

Could not agree with you more!

I wonder if this means the will no longer require a data plan? I would think the majority of smart phone users never even use more than 500MB a month.

I'm guessing these are family plan rates as all of that was discussed earlier as well.

Also, as has been mentioned, 2GB for the casual user is a huge chunk of data. I think alot here aren't noticing that because we fall under the power user category. If these were for single lines, there would absoultely be a smaller tier than 2GB @ $30. I'd expect something like 500MB @ $15 or something.

*Note 1 – We have also been told that this is for both 3G and 4G smartphones and that there are not separate plans depending on device. So if you are under contract currently, you should be fine and don’t need to run out and buy a 4G phone just to lock in as we’ve seen other sites seem to want to suggest.
*Note 2 - And I should probably clarify that these new prices should not affect anyone that is currently under contract. Major changes like this concern only new customers and possibly those that are up for a renewal. We have even heard mention of current customers being allowed to upgrade to a new device after July 7 though, and continue to keep their unlimited data, but are awaiting further clarification on that.

This was added i think after the article was written here. Just as an FYI.

That would be outstanding if it were true about not needing to jump out for a 4G to lock in. Hopefully we'll have some verification soon.

Are the caps the same for 4g devices? Insane, if so. Watching one episode on HBO go will kill half your cap.

If so, boy am I glad that I upgraded to a Tbolt when I did. Having 4g is useless if you have such low cap. Have fun with that one, future Bionic owners ;)

I think that one was verified but of course never 100% sure. But i agree with you, if they view it was just smartphone data and not 3g vs 4g that is better.

@beardface-- i totally understand your aggression towards the tetherers that most likely ruined this for everyone, and i am by no means trying to start a feud with you, but do you think this is the only way? i mean come on, those prices are ridiculously inflated.. do you agree?

Beardface is being totally irrational. Tiered data has been on the horizon for a long, long time. The 5% of tetherer abusers out there have nothing to do with it. He can urge people to direct their anger at them, but this has nothing to do with them and everything to do with capacity and carrier revenue streams.

I've reviewed my old bills and my average data usage is 1.3GB on 3G. One month saw 2.2GB and one saw 3.3GB.

Now, keeping in mind that 4G is roughly 10-20X faster, I know I will start with the 2GB plan and closely monitor my data usage, but I have come to peace with the fact that I will likely and happily pay for a 5GB or higher plan.

The poor 3G speeds are ultimately what have held me back from using more data. Now that I will be able to browse, stream, and game more effortlessly, I will, and I will pay for the service.

This is garbage. I hope anonymous and lulz hack the crap out of Verizon wireless.:icon_evil:
Yeah, that would be TOTALLY AWESOME

Man, I can't wait till they cripple Verizon's service, bringing down the abilities of millions of paying subscribers because some hackers aren't happy. Man, that would be totally sweet to completely ruin those services for their own personal gain.

Let me guess, you're one of the people who tethers 20GB a month while using their PS3, laptop, and other various devices through their phone.

I rarely tether and when i do its on special occasions like when the power goes out, isp fails, or if im on the road with my laptop. My last bill i used 2.63gb of data. I'm an IT guy and am on computers/ internet all day. No need to tether much.

Back on topic. These big companies are going to keep loading it up on us customers. Something has to be done and will be done.

How do they do an upgrade to 4G to have a better availability of bandwidth then cap the downloads anyway? I thought 4G was supposed to allow more users and faster speeds? idk how they can call it a data plan anyways...were just paying to use there bandwidth.

I don't know why but I find all of this highly amusing.

First, I doubt strongly if it will be 2 gb for $30.00 but so what, I won't pay more. And do you guys really use that much data? I just looked, I'm a little past 1/2 way through my billing period, I've used 0.033 gb. :)

I don't see this as an issue, and I think I'll be grandfathered anyway.

Some of those points are true, but you have to remember that the Smartphone market is still growing every year. More and more people are purchasing smartphones and getting data plans now that they are more accessible and mainstream. So while the new network is great, the concern for the carrier is how can it keep up with increasing market demand for more mobile data as they gain more and more subscribers.

I'm not saying it's right, because of course (IF this leak is believed to be accurate) they are predictably gouging us on pricing AND offering no unlimited plan. In that respect, they are showing some greed. But the reason they are doing this should be noted. It is not because of tethering... this has been a concern of the carriers for a long time.

I think the biggest problem (other than the cost) is the fact that we're going back into the stone-age, where we actually have to watch out for the big bad overage monster again.:icon_evil:
