[Updated] Verizon To Officially Reveal Tiered Data Plans July 7th; Plans Leaked Below

I don't know why but I find all of this highly amusing.

First, I doubt strongly if it will be 2 gb for $30.00 but so what, I won't pay more. And do you guys really use that much data? I just looked, I'm a little past 1/2 way through my billing period, I've used 0.033 gb. :)

I don't see this as an issue, and I think I'll be grandfathered anyway.

If I'm grandfathered in that would be great and I'd stick with Verizon for a long time.

I sorta believe the $30/2GB figure, but I was hoping it would be less. However, like you, I barely use 1GB per month on my heaviest months, so it wouldn't have a big impact on me. What I was hoping for was a 1 or 2GB plan for $15-20 so that I could spend LESS money while using my phone the same way. I guess you could say AT&T's pricing plan ruined that possibility for us.

Yes, I thought that this might save money for a lot of us. I want to hear it from the horses mouth. We will find out in a few weeks.;)

Also while I'm in here I want to remind everyone to be respectful to each other. I've deleted one post already, lets keep it civil.

I'm guessing these are family plan rates as all of that was discussed earlier as well.

Also, as has been mentioned, 2GB for the casual user is a huge chunk of data. I think alot here aren't noticing that because we fall under the power user category. If these were for single lines, there would absoultely be a smaller tier than 2GB @ $30. I'd expect something like 500MB @ $15 or something.

Yes, verizon has been quoted as saying they are going to be moving towards pooled data for family plans. I'd put money on it that these are family plan prices for pooled data.

If that's true, then I will save $10 a month on my phone bill with the 5gb plan. My wife and I both have smartphones, so currently we are paying $60 a month. Heck, I might even drop down to the 2gb plan and save $20 - $30 since my wife and I rarely go over 2 gigs a month combined, and if we do it's only $10 per gig.

I'm actually looking forward to the tiered data pricing.

Some of those points are true, but you have to remember that the Smartphone market is still growing every year. More and more people are purchasing smartphones and getting data plans now that they are more accessible and mainstream. So while the new network is great, the concern for the carrier is how can it keep up with increasing market demand for more mobile data as they gain more and more subscribers.

Not five minutes after I posted this comment, I came across this article:DailyTech - Nielsen: Smartphone Data Usage Continues to Skyrocket

Nielsen has released a new report that characterizes what it calls the "Mobile Data Tsunami." In its monthly analysis of 65,000 mobile lines, Nielsen found that smartphone owners — particularly Android and iPhone users — consume more data than ever before.

Android users consume the most (582MB per month on average), with iPhone users close behind (492MB). Android users’ data consumption has been duly noted by Nielsen and others in the past.

The increased usage translates to even greater numbers than would appear, thanks to smartphone users now accounting for 37 percent of all mobile subscribers in the U.S. (That number is predicted to swell above 50 percent by next year.)

are we sure these prices are for phones, and not tablets?? when this issue came up in the past, i thought there was some discussion about the prices for tablets being more than the prices for phones...??

Good, I'm glad there's a bright side.

I couldn't agree more . . . dancedroid

I have never had to change plans just because I got a new phone. Even when Alltel became VZW in my area and I have since bought two Droids and a T-Bolt and am still on my old Alltel plan. Getting a new phone has always meant extending/renewing my current contract/plan, not having to change to a new one. Hopefully the same will still hold true. Conveniently my next upgrade is on July 7th so I guess I'll find out then

Do you have to buy a 4g phone to get on a 4g "plan"? Meaning, could I just go buy a Thunderbolt, activate it, and get 4g service out of my current data plan with my Droid X?

I'm almost 100% certain because it changes the way you look in the system. 4g has a sim card attached to your name for the LTE part of it. So i'm almost certain you have to have a 4g phone to have the 4g data part of it associated with your account. Though not 100%.

Thanks for the info. I called customer service, and yes the 3g package is different from the 4g package in the system, but switching to it doesn't change your contract or anything. But you do need a SIM card if you don't already have one, though they should give you one when you make the switch to a 4g package for the first time.

The biggest think that ticks me off about this is this: I purposely got unlimited "everything" on my family plan because I hate surprises. I want to know that my bill is going to be $X per month. I can appreciate that possibly prices may have to rise, but I don't want to have to worry about overage fees. Lame.

I totally agree, I use from 8-10gb a month simply because my DX is the only feasible internet connection in the area (besides dial-up). I would probably only use 1 gb on my phone if there was something else.

I would gladly pay more money for an unlimited plan than any limited plan considering that the highest plan won't even satisfy my usage.

I know I use a lot of information, but having a limited plan is just another thing for me to worry about everyday.

This will be the crux of the matter. If the 3G will be allowed to transition to 4G without necessarily upgrading to the phone at the time. A lot of details will hinge off of this.

Yeah, but you do have the Verizon app available so you can use that to track your data usage. Of course when you use that app that uses data. :)

I still say lets wait and see.

2 of my lines have thunderbolts and one has the X i have 2 other lines with dumb phones on them .. if i am thinking right upgrade dumb phones then switch the upgraded phones to the unlimeted lines.. and walla i have unlimeted data still.. i hope...and buy newer dumb phones off ebay or craigslist.

Wow that's painfull!! My wife and I looked at our average for the year and we have never gone over 4gb, but then again never gone under 2gb. So now I'm going to have to pay almost double for my data... sheeesh!

If you two are on a family plan you'd get the 5 GB for $50, you'll actually pay less than what you're paying now.

I'm taking my service elsewhere, like back to my local regional carrier. These prices are ridiculous. Most people are already paying $90/month for minutes, text, and data, and now they throw these at us. I really wish I wasn't in contract right now or I'd be finding another carrier, probably without data, but it would still be cheaper.
