After reading the thing about getting out of your contract with Verizon because of the change in regulatory fee, could we use that to our advantage.
Could I do this:
1. Buy a subsidized 4G phone before July 1st so that my contract has the old regulatory fee.
2. I have 60 days from July 1st to cancel my contract without an ETF.
3. I end my two year contract but keep my service with Verizon.
4. Then I can by a Droid Bionic with subsidized pricing whenever it comes out and renew my 2 year contract.
I see one problem with this, will i be allowed to keep the original phone or how would that work?
You trying to work the system to get a cheap expensive phone is part of the reason why we have such crappy contracts to contend with, to keep people from doing the sorts of things that you are talking about doing.
If you want a Bionic, just wait for it to come out, go get the contract price and call it a day.
I plan to start paying full price for my phones so that I never have to deal with contracts again. If they irritate me, I can sell the phone on eBay and go to another carrier with no hassles.
Personally, I think it should be this way across the board. Contracts are justified to help lower the initial cost of the phone, by gauranteeing that you will pay it all back, and more, in the long run.
Contracts also create an environment where providors or vendors can be lazy and deliver sub-par service and not be held accountable for it.
Tell me, would you go to a fine restaurant and buy a $40 steak, and if it tasted like crap, you would be forced to pay for it, plus pay another $40 on top of that because you were displeased with it?
So now your lousy steak that was improperly prepared, cost you twice as much for you to put down your fork and walk away and go to another restarant down the street?
No, none of us would do that, but we do it with cell phones. We lock ourselves into a contract, and if they screw us or let us down, THEY charge US more money because we don't like their service.
It's insane. If you enter into the contract in good faith, but lets say you just want to go elsewhere, or think you got a better deal with another carrier, then sure, they paid the subsidy and you should pay a fee to leave.
But if your phone was junk(Thunderbolt) or you had service issues, dropped calls, etc... I don't understand why it is even legal for them to make you pay to leave. if they cannot deliver on what they promised, why should I have to pay to leave?
Shame on them. Contracts however, let them get away with poor service because they know that 90% of the people will put up with it because they don't want to pay an ETF.
