Currently looking for a used smartphone solely for the purpose of adding unlimited data @ $29.99 to my line, hoping this plan doesn't backfire..

Just for a warm-fuzzy, if I change my current phone to a used Droid, Ally, Vortex etc (some names I've been searchin for), and add unlimited data prior to 7 July, then I will have unlimited data locked in and an upgrade still available correct?

Will this in any way affect my current contract? Like will changing phones automatically renew my contract/negate my ability to get a discounted upgrade? Still holding out for Bionic, but I hate the corner that Verizon has painted me into...

More info was posted in our intranet as of 6/25:

Existing lines of service that have the smartphone data plan of $29.99 are grandfathered in on or after July 7th, even if they are going from a 3G smartphone to a 4G smartphone (great news IMO).

The new data plans are for new lines of service (which includes an existing account adding an additional line{s}) activated on or after July 7th, or existing lines that are activating a smartphone on a line that has a feature phone on it (the $29.99 data for non-smartphones is not grandfathered to the unlimited smartphone feature), whether via upgrade or customer provided equipment.

Of course things can change by July 7th, however this is the most recent info gleaned from the VZW intranet, less than 2 hours ago. TBV

Activating a used smartphone on your line will not affect your contract status or upgrade eligibility, and yes, it should also get you grandfathered for the unlimited data after July 7th...my suggestion however is to activate the device using your My Verizon account or go into a corporate store to have it done... stay away from authorized/premium retailers, as they are known to pull 'funny' chit on accounts, as they make their money off of renewing/establishing new contracts. I have a Samsung Alias 2 an I've just added unlimited data to my plan so that I'm grandfathered in. I'm eligible for an upgrade in late August. Am I going to have a problem getting a 4G phone with unlimited data when I upgrade?

Yes. Your alias is not a SMARTPHONE you will not get 4g unlimited.

Could I activate a spare BB Tour that I have before the 7th and be grandfathered in?

Yup. I believe BB data is the same as the others. Just remember you have to keep it active till you swap to another smartphone.

Or if you want a cheap NEW phone with no contract, you can simply get a Palm Pixi Plus. They run about $50 brand new (they had them at Newegg this weekend, but now I see they are sold out). That will get you the unlimited smartphone data, and a plus is that you also get 5 GB of tethering per month for free while you have the phone on the account.

Good idea. I think I'm going to get the Pixi from Amazon...$47.

that $47 is for a non contract phone? my d1 has officially gone crazy and i wanted something to hold me over till the bionic without wasting my upgrade...and plus does that mean free tethering if i use that phone?

Correction...it's $48 and some change for a Palm Pixi no contract Verizon (CDMA) smartphone. According to the pervious poster, you get 5GB per month tethering with this Palm. Can anyone provide some more information on this?
