Verizon beings unlimited data throttle - Your response?

I'm gonna guess its the latter rather than the former. Throttling isn't going to drop you from 3g its just gonna slow you down

I was pretty sure I saw somewhere in the FAQs or someone's post that it actually did mean that you would be on 1x for the next two billing cycles.. but I wasn't able to find it; however, I did find something else that I don't think I've seen pointed out yet:

Is there a way for me to avoid the possibility of having my data speed reduced?
If you’re on an unlimited data plan with a 3G device and are concerned that you are in the top 5% of data users, you can switch to a usage-based data plan as customers on usage-based plans are not impacted. Information on our usage-based data plans can be found at Verizon Wireless - Explore.

You may also switch to a 4G LTE device, as only 3G deviced on unlimited data plans can be affected.

They are really trying to get people to give up their unlimited data...

I saw that too but it actually said you would be throttled for the next two business cycles, not dropped down to 1x.

And that ain't happening. I just got unlimited data (went from tiered to unlimited) so I'm definitely not giving it up.

Wow....missed that one. Now that I think about it...and all those iPhone users you mentioned...seems like Verizon isnt bending over too much for Apple. But Apple and Verizon are in a tug of war about Facetime, the iPhone and 3G:

FaceTime 3G for Verizon iPhone may be restricted to tiered data plans | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence
No FaceTime Over 3G for Verizon iPhone This Year as OTA Deals are Being Worked Out?

Now that I re-read that....hmmm. Could be used as a ploy to get all those iPhone folks on tiered plans too. (I know Verizon wants us ALL on tiered plans..lol) If it is...again it seems like Verizon isnt bending over too much for Apple. This is one of the few things I kinda agree with Apple about, I also understand Verizon's stance too.

I ask honestly surprised that they haven't found a way to just force yes all on the tiered plans.

I don't think its fair that they consider 4G data as part of your 2GB allowance. I could blow through 2GB using 4G in about 5 minutes, however it would take way longer on 3G. I just checked and apparently I've used 2.5GB so far this month trying out 4G on my new bionic. Since they only throttle 3G, I think they should only count data u've used on 3G towards the 2GB cap. Other than that, I think what they're doing seems pretty fair.

Of course, thats always a possibility. And a likely one....Is all this considered plan changes so ppl can leave without paying ETF's? I remember something about some plan change earlier this year...cant remember if this is part of that or something new.

Unfortunately, this isn't an actual change to the contract or agreement. It has always been in there that they can control speeds.

So what you are saying is that if someone is going to get throttled, then they might as well take one for the team and get throttled for going WWWAAYYY over the 2gig limit and pull the average up for the rest of us?

I still think if that were to happen, Verizon would change the percentage to throttle and not the threshold to throttle...

This wouldn't do anything to the number crunching. They are looking at the top five percent users. So let's say 5 out of 100 users exceed 2gb, they are the top five percent. It doesn't matter if these five users are at 5gb, 10gb, or 20gb, they are still the top five percent and the threshold doesn't change.

I've used 5.102GB in 17 days which means i am a heavy user but if they mess with my download speeds, They WILL be hearing from me regardless if it says that they can throttle the data speeds in the TOS or not. Stupid Verizon is always trying to stick their hands in your pockets to get money you don't have:angry:

What exactly are you going to tell them?

Ok, third post in a row and I promise it will be the last so I will get off my soapbox.

I have been one that has been saying this optimizing was no big deal and was ok. Well, I changed my mind. I don't know if my speeds lately are because they already implemented these controls but my phone had been sh1t lately with connection. I am one that easily exceeds 2GB a month but that is because I do everything on my phone and I spend a lot of time out of the home listening to streaming music, in the car, riding bike, jogging, at the gym, etc. Lately no matter what time of day the streaming sucks, out rarely makes it through one full sing before it needs to buffer and I never used to have a problem.

Now, as I really start thinking about this, what really gets me is that I (add I am sure many others here have too) have been a loyal verizon customer for upwards of 7 years. I want over that just jumped in at the last minute in July to take advantage off their unlimited plan. So, as a loyal customer for years, I get shafted for going over 2GB but a brand be customer who purchased a 5GB plan keeps their speed?

Finally, what really gets me is that even though they don't have a "family data plan", I think there should be some consideration for the fact that I pay for 4 Droids on my family plan and the other three never go over 1gb each. They have no problem collecting $30 a month for those 3 phones that I am clearly overpaying for.

BTW, I know this doesn't apply to 4g yet but unfortunately I an stuck in a 3g area for another couple of months.

They never said they were gonna charge you for using more than 2gb. They're just going to slow down your speed :)
