verizon just sent me an update to 5.9.901

Technically, you didn't have to be rooted to get a leaked update. :) A full, signed update of 5.7.893 was around that could be flashed in stock recovery. That's what I used. So, the root voids warranty argument doesn't NECESSARILY ring true here. Nonetheless, most of us that applied the leaked update, most likely rooted, as well, yes. But that's only an assumption. :)

Well thanks for throwing some gray into the mix! :)

Regardless, rooted or not, "you" took something on our phone that was unofficial, and there were a LOT of warnings floating around about potentially getting off the upgrade path. By returning it to Verizon and acting like there's something wrong, knowing full well what you did, it's deceptive, and we do not encourage that here.

This needs to be the end of the discussion as this can quickly derail into an ethical debate, and that's not what this thread is about.

I'm just curious what 5.9.901 improves upon, hopefully more than just adding some apps!

Took the words right out my mouth. The warranty i got is all encumbering. I could smash my phone on the ground. Bring it in. Get a brand new out of box that day. 149.99 for 18 months of coverage.

Eggzactly... that is why I will wait for OTA, and more curious about the process. This was the whole trial that was decided with Apple iOS ... We own the hardware and can do what we want software wise to it. As long as we understand the warranty is void, once we step outside official updates/OS versions.

Kind of like when you add a turbo to a stock car engine. Warranty go bye bye...

Yup, and as I said, I accept the consequence of that action. Personally I'm not going to try sneaking one past VZW for something I did wrong. If others do that, well, that's their choice. For me, I'm just trying to get back on the upgrade path in a legit (or mostly legit if another leak comes to the aid) way and not bother VZW with my mistake.

Seriously, lets stop discussing this and get back on topic.

Makes since to me... I have been there with my Nook Color when I thought I had bricked it. Knew I really had no re-course, and thought I was looking at a $250 paper weight. But I got it running....

Well back on topic.... Settings, About Phone, System Updates..... Your Device is up to date! Dang..... 5 Minutes later.... Settings, About Phone, System Updates..... Your Device is up to date! Dang.....:blink::blink:

But when you add a turbo to a stock car engine, it doesn't affect the warranty on the headlights, paint, corrosion, etc....

Within a couple of years, I bet that smartphones will be like computers, where you can change the software and as long as what you did doesn't cause a hardware failure (ie. processor overclocking) they will warranty the hardware but not provide software support

we dont even know if there is a dang upgrade "path" .. show me one press release stating this? The guy who said all this has been wrong so many times. Most are considering him a troll. So much misinformation there. "I heard this and that from this tech blah blah so its deff good info." Plzzz. Just take otas with press releases to back up their authentic nature. And you needn't worry.

Sorry if i was out if line last night but im stuck in the same data loss limbo for 2 months now(plus screaming 9 week old doesnt help much) but it appears 1 developer was able to obtain the leak so were not all screwed. And yes. My hat is backwards and to the side. "Im a gangsta miss katie" but seriously im just a dork that grew up driving rx7's and convertible turbo coupes. DIdn't hurt that every time i would straighten it the girl i was with would turn it right back for me.

For those of you that are wondering, it is now confirmed that if you apply forever root before upgrading, you'll keep root access.

No, we don't know anything at this point except that this update doth not work on top of leaked updates. Anything else is pure speculation until it is confirmed or it happens. All we can do is wait. It's not like the phone doesn't work because we can't update it further. :)

Does battery level have anything to do with getting an OTA update? I tried to do a factory reset one time and found out I couldn't do until the battery level was at least 25%. Even plugging in the phone to the wall didn't matter. It had to be 25% power or more. Now that my 5.9.901 OTA update isn't popping up again, I'm wondering if maybe I need a fully juiced battery to get it to let me do the update.

I guess at the end of the day, there's no rush. Just wish I hadn't missed out on the update. At least I didn't pass on Ice Cream Sandwich.

If this is true I'm betting people who don't have root on this new update could flash their system back to 886 apply forever root, and then reapply the update. I would bet that root could be obtained this way.

Edit: Also the debate about warranty and leaked updates should be in a different thread I think. These threads become too many pages filled with information that is useless to the original point of topic.

That wont work, if they flash back to 886, they'll be stuck with those that applied leaked updates because kernel and radio wont rollback. Then when whatever update they try to upgrade to checks for specific versions, the update will fail.

I would bet no. If this update is checking for the kernel version with 5.5.893 if you did as you describe you would have kernel version 5.9.....I think if you flashed back to 886 you would be stuck there.
