verizon just sent me an update to 5.9.901

Does anyone know if this update fixes anything?
All this chat about right and wrong about update path etc. if this update really makes data or camera or whatever better then it matters otherwise who cares.

Sent from my DROID BIONIC using DroidForums

I installed it manually through stock recovery (noticed you no longer have to rename file to update.zip; it lets you choose a zip file). Things i've noticed:

- never had any data issues, but 4G seems faster than ever for a given number of bars
- new bloatware "Apps" (V-Cast related)
- Emergency Alerts app
- new bloatware "MOG Music" (seems to be something like Rhapsody - subscription service)
- new bloatware "Slingbox"

so far those are my findings.

So far I've only been able to test the camera. Focus is fast (in daylight, don't know about low light yet), the exposure and color saturation look good, and the camera just feels snappier overall. I think the camera issue may have been fixed with .893 but I didn't test it then.

I'll test the radio as soon as I can. I live right near a 4G tower but since I live in a bowl the signal goes right over my head, and I get very little signal in my house. I use a network extender and WiFi, so I'll turn off both and see how much better 3G/4G is in my house. .893 actually made the signal issue somewhat better, so hopefully this new update will improve it more.

Settings, About phone, System Updates....Your device is up to date! DANG.....

This is going to be a long wait... But if it improves the performance of the phone, I will continue to check...

If any of you are running stock, you should be able to put the file on the root of your sd card and update via stock recovery - as long as you're stock 5.5.893.

I didnt get this update but there isnt much they can do to make the phone much better for me after the last update ive had 4g solid for like 4 days straight. It was weird though the first two days after the update i could barely get 4g and was about to return the phone. Then out of nowhere it decided it loves 4g and holds it perfect now.

That is correct, the stock recovery allows for browsing the sdcard and running any signed official update.zip no matter what the file is named. The updater-script is what performs all the asserts during the installation, so that is where the security is maintained now.

any progress on getting this to flash on a device with 5.7.893 yet?
I know a couple peeps were up late last night trying a bunch of different theories.

Has there been any news coming from VZW or Moto about this yet? I just ready through all 10 pages, and did some google searching, and still can't find anything about this.

Also, I wonder if this push is specific to a geographic area. I read some posts about the 911 alert app, and I believe those tests are being carried out in limited geographic areas across the US.

There's unfortunately nothing to figure out. The new update is locked to only update on top of 5.5.893. The boot image from 5.5.893 is different than the one from 5.7.893 (even though they share the same kernel) and therefore fail the security checks. This is the joy of a locked bootloader. If an update is not specifically made to update 5.7.893, then we're stuck on this version of the kernel permanently.

I haven't seen any info on this update at all other than it does exist. You could be on to something about the 911 alert app. Perhaps this is a test to see if it works in areas that have that set up.

I'm running 5.5.893 on a virgin bionic (never rooted, only OTA updates) and system updates tells me 'no update is available at this time.'

I'm in the Pittsburgh metro area.
