verizon just sent me an update to 5.9.901

Soak tests, if that is what this update is and it appears that is the case, are always pushed out on a very limited random basis to a set number of users. They then gather feedback from any issues that arise from that group and push it to another limited number of users, given no serious problems. Nonetheless, this has yet to be announced or acknowledged by any official source, so all assumptions are dangerous at this point.

I'm still running the original SW. I haven't even gotten the LAST update. Yes I'm rooted.

so you're still 5.5.886? I have the stock 5.5.893 file if you'd like to update... same as above, you should be able to install from sd

So I've been running bone stock kernel and radio while happily hacking the system with custom ROM's

I was able to get the 5.5.893 OTA and keep root and keep on romming with Kin3tx (which uses 5.8.894 system files)
found out about this newest OTA and was able to get it to work. this is what I did.

1. restored back to 5.5.886 system files using Dhackers released and forever root thread
2. reapplied the forever root hack
3. phone asks me to update to 5.5.893 again (mind you the kernel and radio already are, but the system wasn't)
4. ran the update, verified that I still had root
5. ran the 5.9.901 update, verified that I kept root (which I did)
6. back on Kin3tx with everything peachy keen so far.

for those who were able to get the official OTA and such, restoring back to the 886 system files seems to work in getting you pushed forward to the 5.9.901
at least for me it did. granted it took me a while going through each step.

Soak testers are typically given a web page to report issue on.

That means if Moto hasn't given them a web address and long-in, it is not likely a soak test.

funny thing is moto's forums have been, and look to continue to be, down...

I got it to work, but hadn't been updated past the original leaked 5.5.893. Stock otherwise.

This.

As a matter of fact, their forums aren't even functional right now and haven't been for a few days. If it were a soak test, I would think that Matt from Motorola would have contacted us somehow.

I haven't seen any info on this update at all other than it does exist. You could be on to something about the 911 alert app. Perhaps this is a test to see if it works in areas that have that set up.

I've been watching this since the beginning and another trend that seems prevalent is that everyone that received it OTA got their Bionic "last week". They received the 5.5.893 earlier and then the 5.9.901 yesterday. You see constant mention of people receiving two updates within such a short period.

Yea, I have no idea. It doesn't currently do me any good so I'm not too concerned. Just going to sit back and watch how it all plays out. My phone works on 5.7.893 at the moment so I'm not going to stress. I'm curious as to how well the radio works in 901 though.

Ok, question. If I have updated (via stock recovery) to 5.5.893 and then afterwards updated (via Clockwork Recovery) to a ROM designed around the 5.7.893 (Eclipse) and in my 'about phone' it says 5.7.893, does this mean that my kernel info is all still 5.5.893? And consequently I will be able to use recovery root to return to. 886 and 4ever root then update to 5.893 then update to .901?
I am not able to try it now (on the road home from annapolis).
Any thoughts?

Should work fine. Just remember you need to be on the stock versions for applying updates, not a custom rom. But the kernel/radio should be fine if you've only done OTA updates.

if the 5.5.893 you have is the OTA then yes you should be able to do it.
and you're correct, the about shows the system file version (which would change depending on the ROM you're on)
but your kernel and radio are still the 5.5.893

I was in the same boat as you, just a few posts back I describe what I did to get the new 901 update

Just checked my kernel versions and y'all are right, it checks out.
When I get access to a comp, I'll try it and post the results here if its helpful.
