I'm surprised by this. I would think with LTE coming out (and the increased fees associated with LTE), they'd be eager to upgrade people from their "cheap" 3G unlimited plans or even cheaper feature phones, making upgrades MORE accessible, not LESS.
I'm interested to see how it plays out, as well. But I'm not convinced LTE is going to cost more, outside of being capped and then exhorbitant overages.
But I've been kind of counting on being offered an early upgrade because VZW will want to report good numbers to investors for LTE. I also figured with the IPhone coming and the millions of expected AT&T switchers that VZW will have no choice but to push as many subscribers to LTE as they can.
This announcement is a real blow to my way of thinking. On the other hand, they can always make an exception. It does sound like there are pockets of deteriorated 3G speeds around the country, so I do think VZW will be aggressive in enticing people to switch to LTE.
Quite possibly. But at $8 a month that's nearly $200 over 2 years, plus $100 replacement cost. You have to lose or break a phone every 4 years to break-even on that. Almost a non-issue if you have annual upgrades, especially when I'll soon have my OG Droid as a backup.
I would think this is going to carry us until we get our next phone. I can't believe that they will revoke when we have received our upgrade offers. Just think this will be the last time we'll get it early and the new upgrade will be the start of the new policy for us.
I'm definitely not thrilled with this change at all. Sucks actually. May have to go to year to year contracts, which I have a feeling is what they are pushing for. Leaves more openings to be able to fiddle with contracts on the more regular basis. Meaning fluctuations in fees.
Well this blows, I would think with verizon begining to dominate the market they would at least throw us a frickin bone. I think they may be forgetting that the early upgrade switched a lot of people over to android phones and in turn a data contract thus giving them more revenue. How is sprints 4g? T Mobile's? I think its going to be time for a change. What is meant "pay $70 for the one year plan"? Are you paying $70 more on the phone but still have rebates?
Yes. For example, my X was $199 after mail-in rebate on a two-year. For a one-year it would be $269 after mail-in rebate. NOT bad considering you can get a brand new phone 12 months earlier, only ends up coming to an extra $6 bucks a month over the course of 12 months.
I knew I should have gone one-year.
Good thing I really like my phone and I have options as to customization.
Yeah an early upgrade. But you only get one of those per account for the life of the account according to their policy. Sure there's probably ways around it by complaining a lot, but im just talking about their standard practice. My upgrade date is october 2011 and I guarantee you that won't change in february without some salesman forcing an early upgrade.
im eligible for an early upgrade right now, but im waiting on the Thunderbolt or maybe the LG 2x, if they do retroactive im not gonna be really happy! If they change it then ill need to wait till June.
I'm a NE2, but are you telling me I could force at least 1 early upgrade (never used one)? That'd be a sweet deal and get me out of a bind here looking to get an LTE handset some 8 months before my upgrade date.

One early upgrade per life of the account? Nope. Been getting one every year. They are funny about the wording, but I haven't gone more than thirteen months max between getting phones on discount with my two year plan.

Right now, if i want to upgrade my phone, I can wait till my two year contract is up, then get the fully discounted price. Which is what I do. (with two lines, so I get a new phone every 12 months, but thats not the point here.)
So, with this "new" policy... I can still do the same thing, but now I can't.. what exactly?
-I can't pay the full purchase price to buy a new phone at 18 months into my contract? No, I'm sure they will let you buy a new phone.
-I can't get my fully discounted phone early? OK, but could I get that subsidized price early anyway? I never succeeded in getting an early discount.
Someone help me out here. What does this new policy change?
This policy is doing away with early upgrades at twelve months and moving it to twenty months out of a twenty-four month contract. Locking you to your phone eight more months before upgrading at a discounted cost.
So my wifes phone is eligible on feb 4th(20 months) for an upgrade, shes been limping her POS dieing phone until that day...now she cant get one until June--full 24 months, even though everytime i log into myverizon,it says eligable on feb 4th? How can they offer something, then take it away? Looks like sprint may be in our future if this is the case...im not even going to tell her....I dont have the heart.... I sure hope this is a bad joke or were grandfathered....
