Verizon Tech here - ask away!

Status
Not open for further replies.
Thanks to all responding to this thread. VERY informative, even though I don't have any issues with the Droid, it's always good to learn. Thanks VB for your enormous time investment. Probably makes you the go-to tech in your store, every store has one.

Good evening. I have a problem with my notification ringtone ever since the new update was installed. It seems to be "stuck" on the Ta Da and Vibrate each time I receive a text message and not matter what I change the Notification Ringtone to it is still using that Ta Da tone and vibrating. Thanks in advance. I hope that you can help me. It is quite annoying.

OK guys, sorry I didn't get to post here last night. Here we go...

Honestly, that's crap that he said that. The only way to tell if it was rooted would be a terminal program and typing "su" to see if you get access. I doubt he went through all that. If you had apps that said it required root and you didn't have root but you downloaded anyway, that doesn't matter.

For info on how to unroot and things of that nature, take a look at AllDroid.org. Now, I have not officially heard if rooting voids your warranty. I doubt anyone is really familiar with what rooting is, to be honest. I will see if I can get a better answer for you, but it will take some time to get this answer. Lots of emails and things need to be sent and I will have to ask a few people who will have to ask their people and you know how that goes.

Now that being said, I would think it is safe to say that if you root, it would void the warranty. Why? Because you open the phone up alot easier to get screwed up by apps or by terminal commands that you couldn't do before. That is probably how Verizon is going to look at it. That being said, I have mine rooted and I would just assume that I no longer have a warranty. I would recommend that everyone operate under that assumption.

Thank you. I was reading AllDroid.org last night, I'll read more tonight. And, my next document to read is the warranty - What will I loose? Again, thanks for your response.

It's interesting that this topic came up again. I looked into a few things. Verizon has it listed in one of our resources saying that we might start seeing rooted Droid's and gives a very small explanation of what that is. It also says what to look for to see if it is rooted. When I posted that there would be no way a rep would know unless they were really into this stuff, that was before Verizon put this out.

What they are looking for is the info in the About Phone screen. If FW version, Baseband Version, Kernal Version, and Build Number are different than default, that is the way Verizon says you can tell. However, that would only really tell them if you flashed a ROM to the device, not if you have root access.

It also says that "A rooted phone could void your warranty". As far as what does void your warranty, that is not clear at this point and I am seeking clarification. PLEASE don't ask me if I have an update on this, I will be sure to post when I have an answer for everyone. As of right now, that's where the whole rooting thing is at as far as Verizon goes.

Hey while im playing music on the droid it always pauses for a second or two when a notification pops up. I think its great when the sound is on for notifications so the music isnt drowning out the notification sound but is there a way to disable that when the phone is on vibrate or at all? It disrupts the tracks im listening to, its no biggie it jus reminds me of cds skipping and its a bit annoying.

Hmm, I never noticed this as an issue on my phone. Can anyone confirm if this is happening to them?

My battery use is.....

Display 90%

Cell standby 3%

Android System 3%

E-mail 2%

Music 2%

Last night I went to bed with a full charge and nothing running, woke up this morning 7-8 hours later and the phone was completely dead. i was shocked, my battery life has been excellent because I'm not a heavy app user. And i do not do much and e-mailing and no texting or IMing.

As someone already said, check your settings for your display. That seems fairly high, however Motorola has said that the phone can use up to 80-90% of the battery. A little shocking :icon_eek:

Hi VB,

1) The buttons on the bottom don't always work on first touch

2) Quick Search ALWAYS pops up when I hit the home screen or turn it to landscape

3) Sticking sound when I press the touchscreen

4) Web pages time out

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the phone is bad, possibly something with the screen and not related at all to the SW of the phone. Take it in and have them confirm.

As far as the web pages timing out, all pages all the time? Only some sites and some times? More details, please.

I am currently in Puerto Rico and the GPS doesn't work here. Is this by design to prevent navigation from working?

Hmm, haven't heard of anything like that yet. Depending on how the Droid uses GPS, I wonder if it needs to register on a tower only in the USA to work.

Just double check that your GPS setting in the phone are right. Home Screen > Location and Security > Use GPS Satellites.

Hi Viper thanks very much for posting here! :)

My apologies if this has been addressed, this is a long thread!

I got the Droid to stay in touch with my boyfriend who is deploying. I originally thought Skype would work but it doesn't look like it would, even via Fring. So I am on Google Voice but the word on this now that people are using it with the Droid is that it is charged as an out-of-network call. I do not have F&F and frankly am a bit tight on funds - I hope to avoid upgrading my plan.

I am NOT trying to make free international calls, just make them at the most reasonable cost possible. For Google Voice, can you explain the out-of-network thing, like if evenings and weekends do those minutes not count against me? Can I stay really up to date on my actual minutes used by logging in to my Verizon online? Please let me know if you have ideas for other options.

Sorry if my questions seem silly, I'm not really up on this stuff. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Not really sure what you're asking here. Could you elaborate? What do you mean that Google Talk is an out of network call? For someone to call you on? That is correct, but your GT number has no effect on minute usage for you - the number you're talking to does.

Please try to rephrase that a little better so I can answer your question.

I noticed today that when someone calls me, I hear like a really really quiet whining noise on my end.

That is probably the proximity sensor. I cannot answer why it does that, but the Dare did the same thing. It constantly checks to see if you have the phone up to your face so that it can keep the screen off.

When can Verizon Visual voicemail for the Driod worth with Bluetooth? It's absolutely insane that one can't hear their message while driving safely.

As of right now, I have no ETA on that fix. Hopefully in the next update.

Question: Is there a way to send a fax through Droid? I had downloaded PhoneFusion's Visual Voicemail, and my local VZN rep said I already had Verizon's Visual Voicemail (said it was free with the Moto Droid) - but PhoneFusion offers outgoing faxes $1.50 a month (for a limited time).

I would love to delete that app if I can already get sending and receiving faxes from Verizon for free. Is that possible?

Thanks in advance!

There is no way to do that through Verizon, I'm sorry. A 3rd party app is your best bet.

Viperboy, I got a question for you, When will the Moto Droid Support more laguages that English and Spanish ?
No 3rd party software works with 2.0 or 2.0.1
Thanks

I do not have any info on that, sorry. Try to contact Motorola. That is more their thing than it would be for us.

Is there an app to do what you want maybe? I am not aware of one, but maybe if you search you might find something. I really have no idea if they offer an app in the Market for that.

Viper, thanks for your help regarding my issue about the headphone jack audio crackling. However, lots of other people have been having this problem, and there's a reason that I don't buy the whole 'too much gain/just lower the volume on your phone and increase it on your stereo system' theory.

If phone calls were meant to be able to be louder than media playback, why not use the android software to set different limits between Ringer volume and Media volume. You'd think Google would have realized "oh, well, most people set their music to 100% or close to that, so maybe we should design our software to be able to be set to 100% without having the audio crackle and distort!"

I mean, ringer volume and media volume are two separate settings, one can be muted while the other is set to 100%, so why not just make a software limit on the "max Media volume", setting it to a level low enough to avoid crackling, that way people who are used to cranking the volume up to max can still do so, and then they can adjust the Ringer volume seperately (like we currently do), and also turn that volume setting all the way up. This way, you can turn any volume (media or ringer) all the way up without worrying if it's going to cause your speakers to crackle... Apple got it right, I River got it right, hell, my old Dell MP3 player from like 7 years ago performs better than the Droid.

This is NOT user error: it is either bad hardware on most/all Droids, or software problems in regard to the gain that isn't user-controllable and would need to be set lower or changed somehow in a future OS update. You can't tell me otherwise, because any logic trying to prove opposite wouldn't really make much sense.

Consider all this... I have a pretty nice stereo system in my car, an expensive Bose system at home, and a pretty expensive surround sound system for my TV (which has an AUX line-in for a headphone jack, which I use with my Droid) and not a SINGLE CD, MP3 player, or other thing has caused crackling or distortion as bad as the Droid (or even at all, except the Droid) when volume is maxed out on the device (be it a CD inserted into the device [car, bose, or surround sound] or any of my MP3 players plugged in).

I also have a 2nd generation iPod touch and I have the EXACT same music library on it that I do on my Droid. My iPod syncs with iTunes, and then I use Motorola Media Link to sync my iTunes library to my Droid. Exact same songs.

Every single track is encoded in 320 KBPS VBR, which is pretty decent quality, so don't tell me it's the encoding or poor quality music. I buy all my music on traditional CDs and rip it into iTunes @ 320 KBPS VBR. What I don't buy, I borrow from friends and tip it to my library and give back the CD. All of my music is high-quality! When I say every single track, I mean each and every one in my whole library of 2000+ songs.

I experience absolutely NO crackling from my iPod, even with the volume cranked to 100% on any of my systems. I had my iPod before my Droid and wanted to stop having to carry two devices (one for music and then another as a phone) when I got my Droid. That's *why* I bought the Droid; so I could have a good media player for music, videos, etc, and a phone, all in one. That way I can leave the iPod at home and have less things to carry around... however, the Droid FAILS to perform. At less than 70-80% volume on the Droid, the threshold at which audio of any given song with a mild (mild being not very much) amount of bass, combined with whatever system I'm playing music on pushed to 100%, the overall volume sometims isn't enough, and being able to boost the Droid's volume that extra 20-30% would be enough (or more than enough) to hear over the loud things I'm usually doing (driving with the top down on my car, being a few rooms away in my house from my surround sound, etc.) It's harder to hear music with my Droid only being able to give out 70-80% of it's volume. It should be able to perform at 100%.

Since it's unable to do that, I would have to say it's got to be one of two things: 1) a software error, as I mentioned, where the gain or some other setting is too high or is causing distortion and the setting(s) needs to be changed, or 2) a hardware issue where defective parts are causing the distortion above the 70-80% volume threshold.

Viper, would you agree with any of this or am I crazy? Or are cell phones not really very good media players and I should stick to my iPod for music playback.

By the way, the reason I expect my Droid to perform at 100% is because on my iPod touch, I have a Griffin Auto Pilot that plugs in to the bottom of the iPod that provides direct line audio quality sound, and when you plug something in to the bottom of the iPod like that, whether you have the volume bar on the iPod set to 100% or 0%, it still plays sound 100%, because it is direct-line quality. However, if you just plug a headphone adapter for whatever you're using into the headphone jack on the iPod, you have to set the volume slider to 100% on the iPod to get the same level of volume to come from the iPod. I assume it should be the same with the Droid. The Droid lacks a bottom port like the iPod, so I assume that setting the Media volume to 100% is the same as getting a direct-line feed (in terms of volume... not quality... direct-line will always beat out the audio fed through a headphone jack).

And when I say my iPod never crackles, even at 100%, I mean through the headphone jack and through the bottom port. Either way, no crackling, at 1% volume or 100%. The Droid should be able to do the same.

I guess I'm just wondering if you've had other customers complain about this problem; there have been a few posts on this forum, Droidforums.net, and several on the motorola support forums. I am not experiencing this problem alone, which, again, tells me it's likely not user error if people are trying to do something with their phone that it simply sucks at doing.

Here's a link to one of the many threads on Motorola's Support forums: https://supportforums.motorola.com/...10A5F27F0454419B61158.node0?start=45&tstart=0

And another thread regarding this issue: Crackling in speakers when you use the 3.5mm - Page 2 - Android Forums

Again, this is a widespread issue.

I NEVER have any device that I run as a line-in at 100%. I keep my Droid at about 50% and increase the volume of the stereo that I'm using. The more volume you push out from the Droid, the more gain it will have to be able to make the volume louder. It will naturally distort. I haven't seen it distort more than any other audio device that I have used.

I think your problem, as well as others maybe, could be corrected with lowering the Droid's volume and increasing the stereo's volume. I have not heard anything from customers in the store about a problem with distorted audio.

Voice search always goes straight to the web search. Some users have no problem, others like myself do.

any ideas?

Thanks.

Well, truth be told, I don't sure the Voice Search but if you press and hold the Search key from the Home Screen and say "Call John", for example, I get a list of people named John. That doesn't work for you?

Negative. It goes to the internet and does an auto google search for the keywords "call John".

Thanks again for your time!

Hmm, very odd. And it does this in SM too? (I will be referencing Safe Mode as this from now on - alot easier to type!)

Let me start by saying that this is a fantastic discussion that is going on here. I am new to this forum and have to say that most folks have been very well behaved and very courteous to our new found best friend, Viper. I find it highly admirable that Viper has taken the time out of his day to sit down with us and answer questions one by one as they are posted. I am flabbergasted by a few of the posts in this thread that question Viper's credentials and leadership he has displayed to all of us. I have read every post thus far and have not seen one helpful post by the nay-sayers who present themselves as having royal authority and position to pass judgment on others. I have, however, read well over 100 posts where users are looking for advice and are receiving good information that is of great assistance to us all. I am really on a soapbox here, but I cannot help it when people feel they have to stand up and say things that are completely out of line and unproductive. Viper, I say "carry on!" I speak for myself, and assume 99.5% of everyone else, when I say THANK YOU!

OK, now I originally posted this question in a different thread that no one answered me in and thought I would bring it up here. I am new to Android (a Blackberry Defector) and just purchased the Droid on Tuesday. I have noticed when I am using the browser on a site that requires a username and password, like my bank or netflix, that every time I enter the username and then press "next" on the virtual keyboard to go to the password box the browser states "the browser has stopped working suddenly and needs to close." The phone then closes the browser and returns me to the home page. I have had this happen every time I try to log in on any site that requires it. If I try to log in the same sites and press the screen on the password box, the problem does not happen. I am not sure if it is a virtual keyboard issue or a browser issue, but either way it causes the browser to crash and close.

Thank you very much! I do feel very welcomed here! As for your issue, does it happen in SM too? Doesn't happen to me, and I have not ever heard of that being a problem. Does it happen in both landscape and portrait modes? Did you try clearing your cookies and cache and things from the browser too? If it continues to happen in SM and after clearing all that crap out, I would say to have the device replaced.

Viperboy, thanks for helping us Droid users with question/problems we have with our devices! I just have a couple issues that I'm concerned about:

1. Why is it that I still can't view some animated/videos that are sent to me by MMS? I have a friend that has another verizon smartphone (Blackberry Storm) and he has not problem viewing them.

2. When I check my Gmail account, it still shows some of the content (images) that are attached to the email as "question marks" instead of what it is supposed to be.

Thanks again, hope you can help!
Yep same here , can't see pictures in e-mails , just a blue square with question mark .
Any insight in to what to do to see the pictures ?

1) It should work when you tap on it, but did you try saving it and playing it?

2) As discussed, this seems to be an issue right now.

A fair warning for this thread here guys. viperboy is here trying to help and answer questions for us. If you don't have anything nice to say please don't say it (or post it here). I have deleted a few posts already and will be watching this thread as it progresses. Have a great day
First off !!!
:icon_ banana: Welcome to DroidForums Viperboy :icon_ banana:

I have to Agree with Miami TOTALLY !!! I think Viperboy is providing a service to all who read the forums, and this thread. He is taking alot of his own time to do this. I believe he is honestly trying to help others here. I don't think the need to question where he works should be an issue. No matter how he comes by his information. It seems to help those who need it. I find him to be very knowledgeable in all things DROID so far. I just finished reading all the posts thus far, I have no reason to doubt his replies on any topic he has answered so far.

I for one Welcome his participation here at DroidForums !!! This is my personal opinion ! As a MOD, and as a fellow DROID owner.
I am looking forward to his future posts !!! Lets make him as welcome here, as we like to feel ourselves.

Thanks so much! :D

Add one to the can't see Embedded pictures in Gmail
i have narrowed it down to ones that are hosted on gmail..
if someone else embedds a picture and that points to a URL then I can see them.
If the pictured is attached I can download but if it is embedded it does not seem to loaded.

THANK YOU! This is very informative and I will be looking into this myself to confirm. I will send this info up. Thanks again!

Hi.i have download app on my desktop. how can i put it on my Motorola Droid need help. thank

Huh?? If you are saying you have a 3rd party app, you need to save it to the SD card and download an app from the Market like "App Installer" to get it to install on your phone.

This thread has been pruned of most posts that have no purpose being here, or should never have been posted in the first place. I am now giving a warning. The pruning of things such as.. "i don't believe your credentials, or this is stuff that can be found on google" or anything along the lines of that, will also be coming with infractions against those members. If you believe him or not, that's not needed in this thread. He's here helping people and I for one am grateful.

Thank you for monitoring this thread. Let's try to keep this tidy for the good of the community!

Really appreciate your help!! Quick question...Is there a way to disable the search soft key at the bottom of the phone. I hit it accidentally all the time. drives me crazy! thanks.

Nope, unfortunately. Sorry.

Viper/Anyone,
What is the max file limit for sending videos via MMS or to Gmail? I can send a 30 second video without problem, but much beyond that I receive an error message that the file is too large. Thanks!

I am really not sure off the top of my head to be honest. I will look into that for you. Sorry.

skipped my question lol it's ok you are probably overwhelmed with all the questions... so here it is once again.

Do you think I should exchange the droid for a new one?

Been almost a month and my droid reset twice for no reason... its too early to tell becuz of the update but did the update include something that fixed this issue? I also had the sound of my ringtone and notifications(all sounds in general) get switched from the speaker to earpiece.(a reset fixed this but I don't want it to come to that again) I don't have insurance for this phone so I want to be safe. What do you think? And also, I bought it directly from verizon so I wouldn't be able to go to a local verizon store to have it replaced is there? Thanks in advance and welcome to the forums!

Hmm, just seems like a bug. It happens to my phone - battery pull and it's good to go. I would say don't worry about it.

Also, bought it directly from Verizon? What do you mean? Online? Over the phone? We still honor that warranty in-store!

Viperboy -

Thanks again for your assistance. I searched the forum but haven't been able to find the answer to this.

After selecting multiple emails there is an option in the menu to deselect all. How do you select multiple emails? This would come in handy when deleting spam.

No, unfortunately not. I have no idea who was in charge of designing the GMail app, but I would like to kick them :icon_ devil:

I just got the droid and am still trying to figure things out.

quick question. my unlock icon changed from the nice arch to the straight line. Was this a result of the update? Can i change it back to the arch look?

thanks

As stated, part of the update. No way to change it back to before. Try an app like LockBot. Let's you customize the lock screen.

Hi Viper and welcome. Thanks for all the good input and your valuable time. I hope all here will realize that you are offereing tech help pro bono. I for one really appreciate it. I hope you do not get bowled over by so many requests.

Thanks! I have alot to answer everyday, but I like it and actually look forward to it. I don't get fun questions like this here in the store :D

Hey viperboy, I hooked my droid to my car stereo with a auxillary cord into the auxillary jack, and used my phone as a MP3 player, and a handsfree device. After using it in such a way, when reciving or making phone calls, I could not hear the party that called me.

I believe there is a known issue on this at the moment. Should be fixed with the next update.

Hello Viper,

Thanks for all of your help and information. I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked. Regarding the system update, my phone never showed the dialog box asking me to update, but when I checked, the version said 2.0.1. Do you know why this is?

Thanks!!

After a certain time, whether you ignore the update or tell it not to install, it will do it anyway.

I love my Droid! It's the best phone I've had (and I just upgraded from a MotoKRzr after three years...) BUT after installing the new release 2.0.1, I can't seem to access my voicemail properly. I've tried a couple of ways (going to "phone" and hitting vm button, manually dialing *86) as well as checked the call settings for voicemail:

Voicemail service: My carrier
Voicemail Settings: Settings for my Carrier (*86)

Is there something that can be done to access the voicemail -- is there something that needs to be reset?

Thanks in advance, Viperboy...You are doing a great job answering all these questions. :)

Hmm, settings seem right. Do you have VVM? I would call up tech. It could be a big coincidence and be a network problem.

Yes, thanks for joining. I was worried about making GDE, Home++ Beta, Panda or other Homes my default because if that was causing a problem, how would I be able to change to the stock home. Seeing that there is a "Safe Mode" is good to know.

If you want to unassign the default action from any app, go to Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications. You could select Home++ and select "Clear Defaults".

If it helps you, I use Home++. Runs excellently on the Droid without any problems. Very, very smooth. Best of any that I have used.

I have searched the forums and can't find the answer to this one question.

Where does the Droid store a MMS delivered ringtone?

It is not stored on the SDcard, I pulled the card and ringtone is still there.

It is not in the "system\media\audio\ringtones" folder with the native ringtones either.

I figure someone will know the answer here on the forums. I have found all my many other answers with a quick search. If I can't find them there is no way to manage or delete them. I have Astro file manager and know how to use it. So where are they?
Thanks in advance.

Jon

look under downloads. also download an app called astro...saves ya from pulling the card out or having to connect to a pc to access it! hope this helps.
I've tried, believe me. Thanks. I feel like i'm playing a game....let's stump the tech.

Let's play!! I just tested it for you... Went to an audio message I got in an MMS, long pressed (not on the sound icon itself, the blank space next to it), and selected "Copy Attached to SD Card". When I go under \sdcard\downloads it's there. I use Explorer to view my files.

Viperboy, a friend is interested in switching to a VZ Droid. Do you know if he can transport his phone number from T-Mobile to VZW? Thanks.

As stated, not a problem. And again, DO NOT cancel your line(s) with T-Mobile. We will take your numbers and assign them to us (Verizon) and T-Mobile will auto-generate the ETFs, if applicable.

Viperboy,
I am wanting to get to know the OS better and possibly get into the development aspect of it. Where would you reccomend that I go for the resources needed?

Android SDK | Android Developers

It would all start right there :)

Hi Viperboy,

Thank you for offering to help on the forums!! I have a problem where whenever I get a txt message and I press the box to reply back, my virtual keyboard (while the phone is vertical) does not show up. The box doesn't even get highlighted with the orange/yellow color and then the screen will either freeze or will let me scroll through the txt thread, but I won't be able to go to the home screen for a bit. Then, it'll either tell me that the txt messaging needs a force close or I'll be able to go to the home screen.
Is there a solution to this?

Secondly, along with the messaging issue, when I'm using the virtual keyboard my keys won't go through. For example, I'll type out "apple" on the keyboard and it'll say that I pressed it (i.e. the letter bubble will pop up when I press the letter), but when I look in my txt bar, it'll only have "apl" typed out. I tried typing slower and it still does it. =/

Thirdly, I know you said not to post any questions about specific apps, but whenever I run my task killer app, a lot of apps that I haven't even touched or opened will be on my "to kill" list. It's not just the same apps all the time either. Sometimes I'll get corporate email, alarm clock, settings, etc. I'll kill everything and then lock my phone. Wait like 5 mins and unlock it and open task killer, and it'll say I have a list of apps running. Is that normal to have apps start and run in the background even though I haven't opened it up myself?

Also, when I call someone I hear a high pitched ringing noise. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens like 95% of the time. When I put it on the speaker I don't hear it. I took it to Verizon and they exchanged it for me, but it's still happening. This is my 3rd Droid because my first one's sensor was broken and that phone never had this high pitched ringing noise, so I don't know what to think. Since the first one didn't do it though, there must be a problem, right? =/ What should I do? I want to go get a new Droid, but I just feel like I'm having to exchange too many times.

Lastly, I turned off the "haptic feedback" option in the settings, but whenever I unlock my phone (move the green circle on the unlock screen), it'll vibrate my phone. Is this normal?

Thank you!!!

Had the problem with the keyboard before. Seems like a bug that isn't in 2.0.1 anymore. I haven't seen it happen since the update.

Apps will auto-start. Nothing wrong with that. Even apps you don't use. That's just how Android works.

And the high pitched noise is the proximity sensor, as previously stated. Nothing to worry about either!

Whats up Viperboy, quick question and I hope that Im not wasting your time. I asked around here locally and no one knows how to delete a single contact from the favorites list in the phone mode without deleting it the contact from the contact list. The only way that its been figured out so far is by deleting the number or poerson as a contact. Any suggestion.

Go to your Favorite's list and tap on that contact. Tap on the star in the top right hand corner to remove them as a favorite.

If you're asking how to get the ones out that you didn't add in, you can't. It's just the phone's recommendation on who you might want to add to your favorites. That will happen if you call that number more than 3 times it will automatically show up in that list.

Viperboy, I just got the motorola droid, and cannot figure out in the picture gallery how to transfer pics from one folder to another. Is this possible?

1. Just press and hold on the picture you want.
2. Select "copy"
3. Go to the new folder and you'll see a little "up arrow" on the bottom
4. Slide that arrow up and your copied picture will show
5. Press and hold the copied item and hit "paste"

Success.

Thanks for answering his question. In the future, you can always do this with the phone plugged in when in Mass Storage Mode as well.

quick question,

I have been having the same muffled sound issues on the reciever end and have done teh switch first to the -4 then to the 13k. Both give me good quality for about 3 hours then it goes back to being muffled.

Should I return the phone for another Droid, or are all Droids like this right now?

Doens't seem normal. I would see about having it exchanged.

Hey Droid Community

What's good. I have 2 questions for Viper. But anyone eles that would like to can chime in.
1. You said the keyboard sliding mech is sturdy and nothing to worry about. My question is what about the volume rocker? Do you believe that as well is sturdy?

2. Now this Is more taylored to anyone with a droid. I pretty much know almost everything about the phone, (tends to happen to something you want, but dont have in your possession lol) but I wanna know about the less known changes in 2.01. Everybody is happy with the better auto-focus and things like that, I would like to know about the changes that few mention in the update. I would appreciated anyones views on this thanks.

Rocker is solid, not seen a problem with it yet.

For the changes, I will be honest, I haven't really noticed anything other than what was posted by Verizon. You might be better off searching for an answer in one of the 2.0.1 threads.

Viperboy: I've searched on this issue high and low, here and everywhere, but I've come up completely dry. As a last resort, maybe you know of a work-around or not....

I very much want to sign-up and get the Droid. Since I am deaf, the vibration notification option is of critical importance. And getting repeat notifications is doubly-important when the Droid's vibration registers less seismic activity than an ant's sneeze.

Sadly, the "Missed Call" app does not cover email notifications. Nor can I find anyone mentioning an alternate email app that has its own built-in notification function to allow for repeat vibration notifications. An alternate email app wouldn't address Gmail and I wouldn't want to totally give up push email by having to do all email through an alternate email app.

I have to admit being rather baffled that a cutting edge smartphone platform such as Android appears to lack the ability to do such a pre-school task as repeat email notifications (that also works with vibration mode). Grabbing a smartphone out of a holster over and over and over again to check for messages is oh-so-snail-mail ... like sitting in the window watching for the mail carrier to deliver the day's mail.

If I sign-up for the Droid right now, without a workable way to be alerted & reminded about incoming email, I'd be cursing it within the week. And ready to turn it into a thousand pieces before the end of the 30-day return period.

So, before I totally eliminate the Droid from my shopping list (and all Android devices be default), I'm making a last-gasp shout for help on this issue ... before going under water for the third time. Thx for any insights you can offer.

I am really sorry, but I do agree, I wish there was a way to have an email reminded and I have not yet found a program that does it. I use SMS Popup and it has a function for reminders, but only for SMS. I'm sorry.

Just to put this out there...

Viper works for VZW... Not Motorola.

Just remember that when asking....

True, thanks alot. However, there is some stuff I can answer anyway because of the resources we have available.

We do talk you know :)

Viper, thanks for all the helpful answers. Most of my answers are found just by reading through the posts. Just one question I have is, in the battery usage screen under "cell standby" there is also "time without signal". What does this percentage refer to? It varies greatly but I am never without service. Sometimes it say 80-90% and I cant figure out why because I am always in the same area.

It refers to exactly what it says :D however, if you have signal, try a battery pull and turn the phone back on. Verify you have signal and stay on that screen for a little and see if it still does it. Seems like a glitch and nothing to worry about.

All I want to no is when are we going to get animations in the browser???? Will it come when we get flash? Cause on my old bb storm I could bookmark a website with a animated radar and it would animate. I no that there are apps for animated radars. .you think if a POS bb storm could it then why can't the Droid????

Flash is an Adobe product. Whether or not Adobe will release an Android based Flash free version (As I do recall, there is an PAID Flash app for Android in market) will be your true issue.

It should work when we get flash IF it is a Flash based animation. if it were to require a plug-in or something, it might not. Flash support might be something you see in the future ;)

Also, the "POS Storm" works differently than a Droid. I can't answer why theirs might do it and the Droid doesn't. They're different browsers that work different ways.

not sure if this has been addressed in this thread. how can you save an mp3 file that has been sent to you via email or text? I've tried sending myself one so I can save it as a ringtone and haven't had any luck.

tnx.

Are you sending the MP3 to yourself through G-mail... I believe you should be able to save it that way.

However, it would be easier and faster if you use the USB cable to copy the MP3 from your computer to your Droid's SD Card, as most mail systems kind of hate you sending MP3s or other large files over the e-mail system.

Go to where it is in your message thread. Press and hold on either side of the sound icon (not on the icon itself). Select "Copy Attached to SD Card". The file will then be store in \sdcard\downloads.

Hey Viper! Sorry if these are repeated questions, I didn't see it in your FAQ and the thread is up to 24 pages...

1) Any word on the issue with the home screen not rotating except when the physical keyboard is pulled out?
2) After the 2.0.1 update, I've started getting notices that I have new email literally every time it successfully connects to my Yahoo POP account, there hasn't been a new email since early yesterday...
3) Also had a problem with my Incoming sound "oscillating" after 2.0.1. It would sound fine for 20 or 30 seconds, then sound really mechanical, like there was no bandwidth, for about a second, then cut out completely for a second or less, then back to normal again. This continues over the course of the call. I just tried the sound quality improvement listed in the FAQ but haven't tested it yet.

So far I'm loving the Droid, just a few annoyances here and there. Pretty much everything has been the type of bugs I expect to see in a new product and know will be dealt with.

Officially, it is known about the home screen not rotating when held in landscape. I don't believe it was mentioned it would be fixed in a future update, but I can't imagine that they wouldn't fix that.

Try deleting that account and readding. Seems like something just got stuck.

I haven't heard of that sound problem before. Bring it in and have a tech look at it. It will probably be replaced. Try booting in SM for good measure first.

Hoping this can be explained. I bought my Droid on Nov 6th and I noticed that I had some reception issues in the house, so I went to Verizon and checked out some of the Droids on display and noticed that they had anywhere from 7 to17 dBm better signal (I do realize that the closer to 0 the better the signal). I then exchanged my Droid for a new one and checked the new phone with the display phones and the display phone still had a better signal by 5 to 15 dBm but my issue at home was cleared up so I stopped persuing the it. I have looked at about 10 different Droids and all of them have a better signal reading than mine but I have traveled with my phone and not really experienced any poor performance. The only place that I have noticed a decreased performance is at a known dead spot for Verizon, which is about a mile form my house and with my previous phone (Motorola Krave) it would sometimes carry a call through the spot and the Droid will not and the area of the dead spot has increased with the Droid. Just wondering if I was unlucky and got two weak Droids or if this is some network issue with my account. Thanks

Some phones just have better reception than others. The fact that your phone had lower service in the store than the demos is weird. Demos aren't modified in anyway to get better service. I really don't have an answer for you as to why you're having that problem. I would just call tech first to see if there might be something going on at your house, just in case.

You can view all embedded pics by using the browser to get to your gmail acct instead of the gmail app or the mail app

Correct, but I (as well as many others, I'm sure), don't feel they should have to do that.

hey viperboy

i have a question about mms, i can send video, picture, recorded notes, mms but not mp3 files, do you know why? the file isnt large only 15sec, my storm had no problem as long as its under 300kb and the file is 275kb. is it because its something verizon hsnt allowed?

I can't speak for other Android phones for sure, but I would imagine that it is a limitation of Android. Seems pretty inconvenient and I don't know of any 3rd party program to allow this.

However, a small workaround that seems to work is from Explorer, you can press and hold on an .mp3 and choose "Send" and tap GMail and it will insert it. If you try to add a sound from the GMail app itself, the only choices I have are Gallery and Documents to Go. I tried selecting Send > Messaging in Explorer, but it just brought up and empty message and didn't attach it. I will forward this issue up too and see if anything can be done about this in the future.

Thanks to all responding to this thread. VERY informative, even though I don't have any issues with the Droid, it's always good to learn. Thanks VB for your enormous time investment. Probably makes you the go-to tech in your store, every store has one.

I guess you could say that :) thanks!

Try booting in SM and changing it. Do you have any other apps that might affect notifications that might be causing a conflict?

Hey Viper boy I'm having an annoying problem I would love it if you could help me with it. Thanks in advance link is just to another thread on this site. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...s/8711-new-droid-owner-needs-help-please.html

I would try another memory card in the phone first. If that still happens and you're ok with formatting the memory card, do so. If not, try another computer. If you still haven't formatted it, that would probably be your only option at that point. Try that out and let me know.

Yes sir I have reformatted my sd card two different occasions. No dice :( I figure i will try to call verizon or go to wally world and buy a sd adaptor and try it that way would that fix the problem?

Try another memory card and/or another computer first.

viperboy- I just got a eris droid, I have no signal with it sometimes one bar. I previously had a motorola Q and had not signal problems. Do you know if the motorola droid has better signal than HTC? Or should i go with samsung omnia2 thanks

I am not a WM person, so for me I wouldn't get one. How many bars did you use to have with your Q?

I would have at least 3 bars with the moto q- i could make calls -once in a while i would loose connection but not that often. with eris I can sometimes connect but my the call on both ends is in and out really
cannot have a conversation

Viper, Thank you for your time you took to reply to an earlier question regarding video file size limits.
On another note (I checked online and couldn't find the answer), is there a means of moving 1 contact (my wife) to the home page so all I have to do is to touch that icon and her number will dial? Also, my business contacts are mixed with my personal contacts. Is there a way of separating them into 2 different folders?
Thank you in advance. You provide an invaluable service to all of us!

Viper,

Thanks for doing this thread.

I am finding that my space bar on the pull out keyboard is a little lower than the rest of the keys.

Is this normal?
