VZW disabling tethering apps from market

When you get a drivers licence you sign a contract that you agree to obey all traffic laws, or run the risk of getting fined and possibly losing your driving privileges. Does that mean I always go the limit or under? Do my tires come to a complete stop at every stop sign?

I think theres a huge differences between driving 68 on the freeway in a 65 zone, and doing 125 through a school zone while chugging jack daniels.

Of course there's a difference. Why do people bring these moot points up all the time? The point is, and always has been, that if some moron state trooper wanted to give you a ticket for going 68 in a 65 he could. You would most probably get it dismissed, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to give you a ticket....

Because to transfer a downloaded file from your phone to your computer through USB you don't need access to their 3G network. You can put your phone in airplane mode and still do that.

However, if you are piping their network to give Internet access to another device, of course they can know. You can't just hide a device from the internet, and if you could, like I said, these android devs should not be begging for donations. They should be patenting their app and making multi-millions for figuring out a way to essentially "beat the internet"....

And there you are stating that when you tether you bypass the phone. Which you cannot. So you are stating that when you hook your PC up to your phone everything you do can be traced. It what is this hiding device from net? It is the app that access the net not the PC and correct me if I'm wrong but the app is on and can only be used on the phone.

I'm done with thus crap believe what you want.

I'm sorry I don't understand your post. Not being a jerk, I'm being honest. I dont' understand what you're saying.

I did not state that when you tether you "bypass the phone". I don't even know what you mean by that. What I did say was, that when you tether, you CAN'T hide the device that is tethered from VZW. In other words, you can't just hop up and down all giddy because no one at VZW will know that a laptop is connected to their network.

I'm glad you are done with this crap. That's probably the best thing you can say.

There you go making me go back on what I sad.

How do you not understand that the pc/laptop is not accessing the internet, but your phone is? Your apps have the right to access the internet right? If the app also pushes what it accesses to your laptop through USB how is that the same as connecting to a wifi, or data card? It is not.

This is all moot anyways. Once the unlimited data plan is phased away and the tiered data plan is in effect, good luck getting away with using tethering as a replacement for home broadband. Even if they can't distinguish what device is using the data plan, they can definitely count each byte that goes through. They can charge you for all of data you go over your limit.

...tethering is sharing a connection to give access to another device to the internet. Now you're saying that when you tether the PC/laptop is not accessing the internet? LOL..I'm sorry man, I'm trying to present my point, but you're making it difficult.

So when I tether, and use my laptop to go to yahoo.com, my laptop is not accessing the internet? Really...?

Very true...all these arguments become completely irrelevant once tiered plans are introduced. No one will be abusing the network unless they pay. And that's how it should be.

Just to be clear when you tether vzw sends you an IP address for your laptop? I think not. I do believe that it is handed by oh I don't know a LAN maybe. Look up ics for windows and tell me what it says.

I said this once before on this thread but I will say it again because I hope people will demand this and make this happen. Once the tiered data plan is in effect, I hope our byte counting overlords will not charge for tethering and no bandwidth throttling unless you are over your allotted data limit.

when your tethered PC goes and checks MS update, or your xbox logs on over tether you dont think verizon sees it?
it'd be really easy to isolate non android ip traffic from PC/mac/gaming system traffic, and compare it to a list of those that pay for tethering.

I would love to see a tiered data plan that allows you to actually use the data you buy however you want.

So why is it that there line of defense is to remove the apps from market, if they truly can tell who tethers and who doesn't why not shut them down?

The fact is they can't prove who does and doesn't.

Trust me if they knew all tethered phones would know it.

Like I said think what you want. Believe vzw when they say they know who you are.

Such mindless creatures.

This has nothing to do with free speech. You are directly insulting members. No one insulted you. I've been reading every post on this thread.

this goes back to my analogy about speeding...can the trooper pull you over for going 3 miles over the limit? sure he can. will he? no, probably not. Now wiz by him doing 125 and tossing beer cans from the window adn what happens?
Its not like he didn't see you speeding at 68, its just that hes got bigger fish to fry.

their removal of tether apps from the market is like the legislators trying to limit/outlaw radar/laser detector.
