z4Root - One Step Rooting for Many Android Devices!!

OK my experience with this app is awesome. My original Droid had gone schizophrenic and the touch screen would just do. Regardless of wipes, stock ROM, custom ROM, etc.. it was just done for. So I go back to stock 2.2 this past Friday and get a replacement from VZW Corporate. Get into my car pop in my SD Card and fire off the app, rooted in about a minute. Download and install ROM Manager and CMR and then flash alternative recovery to SPR. Restore the backup image I took after the cache/data wipe. Back to my BB v0.5 w/ Slayher kernel and all the goodness I had before in just under 10 minutes.

God I love my Droid. This app just makes it that much nicer!

z4root

I have seen this application mentioned. I was curious of what anyone thought about on using it. I will be upgrading to a Droid X tomorrow and was curious if anyone saw any faults with using this. I know the terminal emulator process is probably the preferred method of rooting the Droid X but was curious of what benefits it offered over the other or what disadvantages z4root has. Thank you for any responses

I'm sure everyone has their preferred method. I used this one: Link this morning after I had to sbf flash my phone back to stock. Worked flawlessly too.

As long a you end up at the same thing...being rooted there is no disadvantage to any way you choose. This seems to be the quickest and easiest way to root.

I went more manual method and got to learn about adb shell and some commands in it that have helped me since rooting.

Like I said there is no right or wrong way to root as long as the outcome is a rooted x

Thank you all for the comments, and well I may give this a shot tomorrow when I get my Droid X. I understand your sentiments Wyatt and I went through all that you are describing at least I believe I did lol with my D1. It was a great learning experience and felt like I accomplished much when I did even though looking back was a relatively simple procedure.

Not sure if you guys had any problems rooting using z4?
I chose the temporary method (the new update has permanent & temp root options) and it loaded and the super user app was in the drawer so I thought I was rooted. I then installed wireless tether and it keeps saying No Root. I tried a few different things to no avail. I wonder if the temp root doesn't work on the droidx? I wanted to get the temp to work before I applied the permanent.

If anyone had similar issues, please let me know if you found a workaround. I tried posting in the XDA forums for Ryan but haven't seen a response yet. Stock DroidX-Froyo-OTA
Thanks.

Nope...its the things you will be able to do after...

After you root get bootstrap and get a backup.

i have rooted using this app, but i would recommend backing up your system before you root just to be on the safe side, i used bootstrap recovery to backup my system mind you this is a 2 dollar app but i dont know if theres a free app that can backup your phone in the recovery menu anyone know please post it. thanks

I am rooted the old fashioned way and tried to un-root with Z4. It says it is unrooted but it is not, so I am assuming that you have to root with it before it will be able to un-root your phone.

I am going to reverse the steps of rooting and see if I can un-root, then use this z4 to root and unroot just to see if it works.

let me know how that works, cuase I'm rooted the old fashioned terminal way. I was looking to unroot in a flash with this

I was reading the threads and found this one:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-2-tech-issues/99678-help-me-please.html

OneTenderRebel posted the link below where we can get the sbf (and other files) for the 2.3 update.

New 2.3 sbf files at this link:
TBH & MyDroidWorld Present: Droid 2 (2.3.20) Triple Threat

I will just copy and paste my comments from that thread here for those who are interested in z4Root.

"I was just reading and saw the link above to the 2.3 sbf which I thought was not out yet. I went over there and downloaded the sbf (full Version) and flashed it to my phone with RsdLight4.7. As I was reading while the process went on, I saw that I was supposed to use 4.8 or higher. It worked though and phone is fine.

I wanted to flash back from root so I could try to use z4Root. I did use it and made sure all my apps were backed up with Titanium, then I used Droid 2 Bootstrapper to make a backup copy.

(After root with z4)
I made sure I could use Root Explorer, and write a script in the emulator. Then I used Z4 to un-root, just to see if it works as advertised. (It would not when I had been rooted the nuts and bolt way from ADB).

It says I am un-rooted and I can not use Titanium, or AdFree, nor get su in the emulator, or mount rw in Root Explorer.

I guess it works."

"Nice, so z4 unroots properly????"

"Yes as far as I can tell. Right after going back to Un Root you can still mount RW in Root explorer, as if you still have root, but as soon as you turn your phone off, you come back, and you can not. Only glitch I can find. The Super User Icon is gone from the app drawer right away, and it is different looking that the one when you use ADB, but when your are rooted you can do as you please. Also Titanium will not work until you download their version of Busybox."

Oh, after the flash of 2.3. I had a blue triangle instead of the 1g/3g and could not go on the net or get mail etc. YOU HAVE TO DIAL *228 OPTION 1 to reprogram your phone.
