I'm amazed by this thread.
First Ill say that Im interested in the improvements in 2.1 as I understand them. Having said that, I dont NEED any of them as my Droid does what I bought it to do - better than I expected. So IMHO, I have no interest in receiving an update that creates new problems that I dont have today, since the device works fine today.
So while I understand that many people may be frustrated by the level of communication from VZW and MOT. Im not going to defend the way it has been handled but I will say this (as someone who has spent some time in the SW biz): Its usually unwise to say ANYTHING about content or availability of a release until the final version is tested and ready to "ship". This kind of noise/pain is exactly what happens when the inevitable bug comes up, or a business issue arises that impacts the release. When we did disclose future plans/release dates, it was only under a strict non-disclosure agreement, was highly qualified with statements that plans can change, and only done when we were looking for client feedback on future product directions. It was certainly not done to pacify the "crowd".
So I would offer this - whether MOT/VZW bungled communications or not, its not really worth your time or increased blood pressure to worry about when its coming. It will arrive when its ready (at least I hope not a moment sooner, as I really dont need or have time for problems from my PDA).
To be direct - If you are confused about what you are "OWED", then I challenge you to find the language in your contract that says you are owed a release, or specific additional function by some date. Im pretty sure it probably says precisely the opposite (but I dont care enough to spend time looking for it).
If you feel that you have been "wronged" in how they communicated, thats fair - it hasnt been handled well. IMHO, they should have never said ANYTHING about 2.1.
You can make a decision: Are you irritated to the point of action? If so, you are free to cancel your contract, pay your ETF (which is spelled out in the contract we all signed), and move to another device/carrier. If you arent quite that irritated, then why waste your energy being mad about it? Spend it to root the dang thing, and get your 2.1 function. Or stop worrying about it, and enjoy it if/when it does come. Either way, enjoy what you can do with the device now.
I dont work for ANY of the parties here... and I guess I probably wouldn't make a good PR guy either... :icon_eek: And before anyone asks, I read this thread because I was interested in whether there WAS anything going on, and kept reading it because it was like watching a demolition derby.
