what could be improved upon with the pattern lock functionality?

Fixes, the security leak with the pattern lock. Here is how:
when the phone is locked even with the pattern lock enabled, and you receive a call, you are able to access the phone just like if you unlock the phone. Once you press the home button, it will take you back to the pattern lock.

unless Motorola releases the source code, which they've failed to do for the Droid to date.
That is simply not true, which is more than can be said of the vast majority of "devs."

Motorola Open Source site.

Droid source consists entirely of code found at the Android repo site. Specifically, for the current DROID release (ESD20) you can find the user space code here (android.git.kernel.org Git - platform/manifest.git/blob - android-2.0_r1_snapshot.xml) and the kernel space code here (android.git.kernel.org Git - kernel/omap.git/shortlog).

Looks like they could be prodded to update the description to reflect newer releases, but OTOH, it also looks like they don't do any modification to the standard Android codebase, so the open source code is all available.

Might be a dumb question, but how is the rollout typically performed? Newest phones to oldest? Oldest to newest? Totally random?

Do we have to reboot the phone to be prompted, or should it pop up in the notifications area when it is ready to go?

I think we learned with 2.01 what nobody really knows. Just liek the 2.1 release date, people will speculate. But nobody has a real answer. I think the main idea is a small rollout for the first few hours then widened as people accept it and it updates OK. But before that happens someone will release update.zip.

All i want is have the 2.1 launcher...if that's missing i am really going to be bummed. Hopefully the Launcher will be easier to port once we are running 2.1 if it is not included.

That is an interesting thought. Because the 3d scroller on the 2.1 launcher does not work on ese53 builds right now. It would be awesome if it does os the droid so we could port it to a custom launcher!

Yawn.

Oh, there's going to be an update? Huh.

I'm one who isn't rooted, and don't care about rooting. If you have, fine. I'm not you. (I like the post a few pages back by someone who stated "we are all rooted." Umm. no we are not)

My droid is used as a phone. Special screens, hacked apps/mods, etc - I could care less. I just want my phone to work. If this update makes my phone better, so be it.

As to the update, I probably won't see a difference I'm guessing.

As a non-rooted user, I'm looking forward to "officially" having the Gallery and hopefully being able to ditch Dolphin, which is not the most intuitive browser to use. I played with the 2.1 launcher apk for a while, but really wasn't knocked out by the 3D launcher. I installed Helix yesterday and love it having five screens and fixed shortcuts at the bottom of the screen. Hopefully that launcher survives the update to 2.1.

I'm a little concerned about this, though:

My friend says live wallpapers eat her Nexus' battery for breakfast.

I am patiently awaiting the update. I will be lucky enough to try out the 2.1 OTA on a spare droid before going back to Cyanogen ROM on my rooted droid.

ok here is my 2 cents.. i am rooted and will be blocking this ota update. not to say i am not excited about this update i have freinds who have a droid that don't understand the time i spend installing roms..but to me it like a new phone every other day or so.. so they will finally be able to get live wallpapers (which i don't use they were cool for a day or so) multi touch and so on. there are 2 diffrent kind of droid users out there ones that root and ones that don't.. we should not beat up on one another about what one does with there phones. this is a forum everyone should be able to post there opionions without someone taking offense to it.. this is Droid forums and they welcome both users.. as stated earlier as well i would like to know the number of root users on 2.1 versus the number that will be receiving the OTA update.. could be interesting \.. just my 2c. i also fell like i need to stick up for the devs a littlebit. someone posted earlier that they just throw things at a rom more or less. these guys spend hours trying to make a rom work smooth and giving us all something that we want.. kudos to them they know more about it than i do.. and they give it away. to them thanks. stock users i am sure if you don't like it there will be a easy way to root in less than a week:)

I could'nt agree more. I'm rooted (Droidmod 1.0) and loving it but excited for the whole android community as a whole and the impact that we are making in the marketplace. :motdroidhoriz:
