A Plan For A Brighter Android Future

czerdrill To be honest said:
I don't need to waste my time reading about anyone not wasting their time by preventing others from wasting their time. We are big boys here so let us use our time as we see fit.
As for the logical reason that this may, in some refined form, be viable may lie in the success of the fruit company. I have several friends who are willing to make an Appointment at an eye store to maybe get on a Pre-order list. Selling open, modifiable phones has certainly put HTC stocks through the roof once moto locked down. To create a sense of elitism in being one of the few on the superuser plan would create tremendous word of mouth advertising.
I recently "raced "two ifone 4s and blew them away on download speeds on a rooted d1. Now they want droids. It's the passion that drives all innovation that happens outside of monetary gain that makes technology progress.
At least a few young people will end up starting a hugely successful multi-national corperation because they were on these forums learning; doing it for fun, working a lame job to afford the latest phone or tablet. That enthusiasm is what will make change happen.

P. S., one of the phones I raced was a jailbroken 4 and I was on THEIR wireless tether. What's that say about how brilliant this community is in making a product that not only "just works", but blows your mind?

OK boys, here's my thoughts on this...

I agree that there is not a carrier in existence that would be willing to train/hire/pay staff to offer support to those that want the 'root' package. But guess what? It already exists!! How many of us are on these forums in different places offering advice on what some poor user has a problem with?

Some of the more advanced folks have helped me learn to root/unroot and fix various issues I've had in the past. Others have helped me to find the link I needed to put a certain theme on my phone.

What if we all agreed to keep doing what we do to help new users along their journey into the realm of android? There would be no talk of money, just us helping the next user out as we already do. Granted, that may mean we have to check in every day even if we were to skip that one, but I have a feeling we're all here every day anyway.

It would be one way to let the carriers know that there would be no additional cost to them to support this small group of users. There is already a huge support community that exists - this should be part of the plan. There are plenty of Dev's that respond almost
instantly to trouble after they have a new release (whether it be a ROM/theme/app). Why put the burden on the providers when 'we' already do it?

Pehaps a support structure that allows us to provide support at the level that suits us? I am an end-user, but could help answer most newbie level questions. Those of you that are more advanced should not be troubled with the basics...that's what I am here for.

There is already a great repository of knowledge on these forums as a result of the folks that frequent here. A little organization so dumbsch*ts like me could find it easily and pass it on would save the bigschotts wating their time on the little matters.

We already spend time here, and most of us help the new ones along the way when we can. I feel if we could organize all of it, there would be no reason the carriers would have to spend the $ for support. The support already exists - it's just a bit chaotic and disorganized.

Give us our phones - and we give support. No more dollars from us, we support what we do. Donation links stay as is for the grateful soul that thanks us for what that. We keep on helping those that come for help, but it unlocks the providers from the extra(uneeded) expenses.

Just a thought.

This won't work because vzw is not going to hand over support to people that they haven't trained. Its a liability issue for them. If some untrained person tries to help you and you brick your phone, guess who your going to complain to? Verizon. And that costs them money. No way they would say "if you need help just go to a droid forum on the internet". No company would allow some third party to offer official support for them without some kind of training/policy in place.

And secondly as mentioned they would expect you to be there reliably. Not just log in when you have free time. If someone leaves a post and no one responds, again they're going to call verizon to complain. Your assuming that suddenly all the users who for two years have been taking advantage of verizon and using every loophole known to man, are suddenly going to band together for android. Not gonna happen.

Root vs Money

@ The Droid-loving Community

So here's the simple fact:

We are the backyard mechanics of the phone world.

We are the hot-rodders, the guys who took one look at a V8 and said 'Cool! But I can do something with that....'

We are at the beginning stages and the simple fact is, the carriers will come around, even if it only means accepting that it will happen anyway. Will they say 'oh let's make some money off of supporting these guys' ? Maybe. Does Ford, Chevy, anyone? Absolutely, but that took decades to really get going and in the end, you slap a supercharger on that '11 mustang you just bought and BAM, no more warranty. Why should they help us in any substantial way? Why do we want their help? They will eventually start selling us stuff, they will eventually realize, 'hey we can cross-train our techs to put Z4Root on peoples phone and then charge 30 bucks for it!' So why do we, the average gutsier and smarter than normal user want their help? Because there are some of us who bricked and got scared and replaced a warranty. Because there are some who took that speed-limiter off and now are worried about getting ticketed. Well i have a solution, don't wireless tether! Don't send your phone to Verizon and say, 'I dunno, it started acting wonky...' There is a reason that TBH always said, 'here's the patch, we're not saying you should use it, but you can...' They always knew it was coming!! Anyone who took the time to think about it did! I've been rooted since i discovered this great community and it's been glorious, but i never tethered because i read 1984 and realized paranoids have enemies too. Do the wireless companies charge more than i would like? More than a lot of other industries do for what they put in? Sure! but the simple fact is, EVERYONE WHO TETHERS WIRELESSLY, AND EVERYONE WHO FRAUDULENTLY CLAIMS DRIVES THAT COST UP! We can't expect Verizon to wake up real quick and say 'duh, we can make a lot of money off these guys....' IT WILL TAKE TIME!

@Wug That said, Wug, your plan is brilliant! I'll support it any way i can. I think it will take a while, and i think only half (at best) of it will happen. But if you never try, you never get anywhere, you don't sit at the end of the bar and wait for that impossibly hot redhead to come say 'hi' do you? Let's do this, and tell me where to sign or what I can do, i'm in.

So guys (and girls), in the meantime, embrace your inner shadetree mechanic, your inner hot-rodder, your inner dreamer.... THINK FOR YOURSELF! WORK TOGETHER! and use what has made this so d*#% fun in the first place, each other.

For the record, I never compared "the plan" to Obama, or riding a bike. I only illustrated those achievements as a reminder that if there is never any attempt (at ANYTHING in life), then there is no hope. There may never be a cure for cancer, but fortunately the people trying to find one don't subscribe to that philosophy. I'm sure those suffering with it, and their loved ones appreciate that very much.

I am not a "follower" of anyone. I am a supporter of change.

I can't stand how everything turns into a debate on these forums, and it goes back and forth between posts with each person trying to be more "logical" than the last response trying to "one up" each other. It's ridiculous, and immature. This is why I lurked for so long before posting anywhere.

Pardon my rant. I'll go back to posting rarely, and only when I feel it is helpful in some way.

Yeah its probably a good idea for you to post rarely if you get so offended when someone has a different opinion then you. The goal is to come up with a plan that works, not support a pipe dream of a plan. Wug appreciates the criticism and its his plan. Your absolutely right, if you don't try it won't happen. But it also won't happen if your trying something that is impossible. This is not obama becoming president, this is obama being born in another country trying to be president. Its not gonna happen. Same with this plan. In its current state it won't happen. So it needs to be tweaked.

The only immature thing is people who refuse to see that and just start worshipping wug for his plan, and don't want others to try to give ways to improve it.

Disdain for people arguing just to argue is not being offended. I am sure you and I will rarely express ourselves in the same manner, even when we share the same opinion. Your personality is offensive, not your opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, are are also free to express them. I support that wholeheartedly.

I agree with you.

Hey look, we agree again.

But it also won't happen if your trying something that is impossible.
I don't believe it is impossible. I believe it is improbable, but is worth a shot... and positive exchange of ideas can only benefit.

I agree. So does he. That's what this thread should be about. Helping to do just that.

I agree with that on either spectrum. See one of my previous posts where I asked what was wrong with brainstorming.

My other reason for deciding to not post as often... its just too much work. I can't keep up.

Everyone have fun though. If I can be of service in any way, let me know.

Yes you are entitled to your opinion. And, again, I did not insult anyone. I suggested reasons why the plan may not work, and wug and I discussed ideas in this thread. I don't understand what was offensive about what I said, but yes...you are entitled to your opinion.

A quick comment/criticism.

It seems that there are 2 major things to address: 1) tethering and 2) returns. I'm not prepared to comment on the tethering aspect but on the returns, I will.

It seems to me that there is quite an elaborate program in place here to handle this with different warranties and support systems. Anytime you take a massive consumer-based product and package onto it an elaborate system, it's bound to fail. Far too many cogs that have to work nicely together, and not intimidate the consumers. Why not just do this: have us rooters declare ourselves as rooters, have us by the $5/mo insurance (Asurion for VZW, is it?), and if we soft brick it and want to return it, that's fine, we'll just pay the $50 deductible for it. And I bet Asurian would LOVE this because that gives them $50 plus a fully-functional phone plus your monthly premium. VZW would love this because it cuts the returns to them and you know they get a chunk of that $5/mo. Problem solved, right? If you're wanting to root your phone and you soft brick it, you're MUCH more likely to learn how to fix that, right?

That's my criticism on that part.

(P.S. Yes, Wug, I still owe you that email. Working on it - look for it tonight.)

You want to remove some of those bloatware apps? Sure, the OS will allow you to do that... For $1 per removed app.
If we agreed to that, they'd start installing 50 bloatware apps. We'd need some sort of stipulation to prevent that.
or else what.....you'll start another Facebook poll complaining about it? Lollol
And what leverage do you have to get them to change?? Its funny reading threads like these because people actually think Facebook polls showing we want unlocked really matter to the big companies. Because lets face it....what's your real option if they don't....jump to iPhone....who is worse? Jump to sprint when they don't either or jump from sprint to Verizon?

Threads like these are nothing different than a 5 y.o. saying he wants a dirtbike because he really REALLY wants it.
