ALERT! 2.2 FroYo Circus continues...FRG01B is Official get it here.

I'm scared to death to do what you have in your instructions. Wish there was an easy way just to load someones package and be done with it.
I hear you. It's a big step. About all you can do right now is try to overclock to 800MHz and install the tethering apps, Titanium Backup (which is an awesome app -- go get it now! :D), and Metamorph. If you want to, I think 928Droid's Black Glass theme has a Metamorph option. It used to. Other than that I've not been too into themes (and still haven't installed his CM6 theme yet. Waiting for the full release before doing that), but I'm sure there are several kicking around that you could use.

Basically, if you don't want to RSDLite SPRecovery in, ROMManager is your best bet if you want to do anything really in-depth like ROMs and easy themes. It'll handle as much as it can inside the app itself.

Well the new 2.2 seems to run about the same - took very little time to install.

How easy is it to overclock to 800Mhz? Can you give me super simple instructions?

I had the 46mb FRG01B installed from last week. I have never rooted. I downloaded the 76mb package from post #1 in this thread and renamed it update.zip. It installed just fine.

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...

Install from sdcard complete.

Again I never rooted and I had the 2.2 update from last week already on the Droid.

Well I wish I'd known that but I bought the .99 cent rooting program and now I'm tempted to use it. Damn thing!

It'd be a shame to let that .99 go to waste now, wouldn't it???? :icon_evil:

You *can* go back to stock if you want. Or you can run a stock rooted FRG01B or FRG22 if you like the root features but want to be like stock. That's what I do.

Lots of options. Based on my experience (and like you, I was pretty hesitant way back when...) if you go to root, you'll probably never want to go without it again.

Go the market, get SetCPU and install it (paid app but the overclocking program), run it. If you're rooted it'll ask for root and tell you to scan for frequencies. It'll tell you what the maximum is and let you clock to there. Unless you're terribly unlucky you'll be able to clock to the max with the installed kernel. :) This also allows you to set up profiles for different speeds, conditions, and allows you to clock the Droid really low in case of overheating.

After reading 21 of the 27 pages thought I would comment. I threw on last weeks update manually. No problems or bugs with it. Just a curious windows user who is used to preferring clean install rather than patches and updates.

Just for ****s and grins I think I will install Easy Root, it sounds like that takes you back to 2.1...and then mess around with a rooted phone to see if I like it more. If not, then I will push this one to my phone. Or, I can still wait for the OTA update correct?

Also...will a Verizon tech be able to tell I rooted my phone and then pushed this manual update if I have to take it in for any reason? I have had enough phones go haywire for weird reasons to take my warranty seriously.

If it goes in with a rooted OS they'll be able to tell. You'd have to unroot to take it back. If you flash in an alternate recovery image you'd have to apply this update or RSDLite a stock SBF to get the phone back to virgin status for repair.

And no, it just adds the elements needed to allow root access to the OS. No flashing back to 2.1 is involved via Easy Root.

Did you name it update or update.zip?? Windows often doesn't show file extensions so if you name it update.zip, its actually update.zip.zip, if you named it using astro the same applies.
$.02, spend it as you please.

okay I will delete the zip part. I added it through astro. I dragged the file from my computer to my sd card. then renamed it update zip. Is that where I went wrong??? I just needed to rename it update? and the zip would have been added for me?
