Android 2.1 Update Rolls Out For Motorola Droid!

Say I don't unroot for a couple of days because I don't want to wait for 2.1, if I were to just go through setting, about phone, system updates would I be able to get the update that way or would I have to install manually? If I'd still have to go manually I might as well just do it manually now.

Android 2.1

you can manually update the 2.1 download and install....i forgot to copy the link (sorry) just google it, and you should find it

I forgot if this is normal when you are in recovery mode but I see this

E: can't open /cache/recovery/command

I see this in the recovery menu below the prompts.

is ths ok?

FYI, I am updating to 2.1 as we speak thanks to the link :)

That is fine. You are good to go. Just don't turn off the phone during installation.

Did the manual update... Took awhile to reboot afterwards, but my stock Droid is running as fast as ever (with live wallpaper loaded). I too love the new gallery; it's just easier to get to everything, and the stacks and scrolling is as sweet as it gets :) . Haven't tried the new News widget yet, but HelixLauncher (the first one) still works great with 5 home pages (no lag for me, with almost all 5 pages full). Still lovin' my Droid; still the best phone I've ever had!

I Did The Update And Running Well, Was The Update Supposed To Change The 3 Original Windows To 5, Because I Still Only Have 3

no only 3 Home screens

As I said earlier, I'm beginning to believe that 4 teenagers on the couch can do more than 10 engineers at Motorola. I'm beginning to believe they are on government payroll. What have they been doing the past seven months? These improvements so far are not worth waiting for. I'm hoping someone will give a full run down of how they spent their time.

This post alone should be a sticky, and should be quoted at least once on every page from now on. Did it all by phone. The live wallpapers are the ****:icon_ banana::motdroidvert::icon_ banana:

does anyone have the thread page # that has the update.zip.
Download this file:

https://android.clients.google.com/u...6.fa406da6.zip <--- Direct from Google's Servers!

OR

signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip

Put on the root of your sdcard (not in a folder)

Rename to update.zip

Power phone off

Boot into recovery (power phone on while holding down x)

When you see the triangle with the exclamation point, press (& hold) the volume up key and camera button key (only press the camera key down half way)

Navigate to “apply update.zip” and press the gold center button on the keyboard to select it. It will start the update process

Reboot

If your installation is 'aborted', it's probably because you named the file update.zip in Windows, which results in a file called update.zip.zip. Try renaming it to just 'update'

EDIT: You can do all this from your phone without using the USB cable.. Using Astro just move the file from your download folder on SD, to the Root of SD..
