Android 2.1 Update Rolls Out For Motorola Droid!

Without a really functional bluetooth interface for voice dialing, this update is purely aesthetic and will do nothing to enhance my experience with this phone. Come on, how important from a productivity standpoint is pinch and zoom? I just don't get the hype about this update.

Someone please enlighten me.

So when VZWSupport on Twitter posts up a tweet that says things like....

"@Sc00ter Have researched it and the link is coming from the manufacuter thats why we were not aware of the link nor could we access it."

"@thomroethke Sorry it has been cleared i calld the manufactuer and thats where the link is coming from"

"@standardsdt it is an ota but its sent from the manufactuer"

....is the "manufacturer" Motorola?

(By the way, VZWSupport on Twitter needs to learn how to spell "manufacturer".) :p

Hey guys I been read this thread and want to be 100% sure... So I installed the update.zip manually from "https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip"

Is this 100% the same exact update as the OFFICIAL OTA from verizon/motorola? I just want to clear it up for myself. Sorry if this is a noob question.

It is now official.

Motorola posted the "official" announcement on their forum sight a little over an hour ago:

"We know you’ve been waiting… so we are excited to announce that the Android 2.1 upgrade has started rolling out in phases to all DROID-carrying Verizon Wireless customers. New features include pinch to zoom, live wallpapers, speech to text and more—see the full details here: To be release shortly."

Didn't have time to read all 185 pages. Running 2.1 and all is well except cannot get Swype beta to work. Did all the normal steps. Has anyone else had the same problem?

Nobody can really tell you that with 100% certainty. It looks legit based on a lot of the discussion here but, like with everything on the web, I don't think you can take it to the bank.

Apparently, people don't know it's April Fools Day...You know that VZW page is fake right?

I hope you're playing an April Fools Day joke on us right? ;)

Which page are you referring to? The VZWSupport Twitter account where they confirmed the OTA 2.1 update, or the scanned page post towards the beginning of this thread?

Nice. Now we have official confirmation from both Verizon and from Motorola. :)

Yeah those features are what I have now with the update from Googles website posted yesterday. My question still is is it exactly the same update 100%? Does anyone know for sure? When i go to check which firmware version I'm running it says Firmware 2.1-update1.

It even has that same live wallpaper as on the Nexus one with all the little lines going all over the screen except the only difference is the Droid is only one solid color being RED I guess the DROID color. The nexus one is all different colors.

I'm assuming it is the same, but I just wanted to be 100% sure, that's all so if anyone knows for sure please reply, thanks! :icon_ banana:

That's kinda what I'm curious about. Me and my friend did this manual update on our phones last night and so far they're great. Mine is a little laggy when opening the app drawer and scrolling left or right on the home screens, but it was always like that anyway. I'm also curious if this is 100% the same as the OTA update. I'm also kinda hoping that when the OTA update hits my phone I'll be able to do that one also just to see if it is different and speeds up the graphics on my phone.

Live wallpapers are sweet by the way... I'm running earthrot, and the choices range from the moon to the death star lol, all rotate and there's live backgrounds behind the "planets"

Yeah live wallpapers are awesome. That is the exact same reason why I want to know, I want to make sure the performance is exactly the same. I notice that the little laggy part is when running the live wallpapers, if I use a regular wallpaper it runs smoother, but it's not bad I love live wallpapers and I'm running them. Once someone figures out how to root this new 2.1 and have a kernel for it I want to root just to overclock to 800mhz or 1ghz. I'm sure then it will be way better.

So basically I'm in the same boat, I just want to make sure its 100% to make sure the performance is the same. I doubt Google would not have time to make changes in one day, because the update went out to Verizon employees first. Then again who knows though right?

If someone can seriously confirm both updates are identical that would be awesome!

It's exactly the same. Also, if you updated manually, I believe you will not get the OTA.

Yeah I don't think you will get an OTA because your firmware will say 2.1-update1 already. That's all I wanted to know that it is exactly the same. I mean it's running way way way better basically feels like an OEM ROM vs some of the 2.1 roms I have installed in the path that would get foreclose errors sometimes.
