Bionic build 5.9.901....Initial impressions......and what we know so far

We are still going to need a way to make our system appear stock for the next OTA are we not? An SBF so to speak. Like how the 43v3r Root batch file would unbrick us and bring us back to stock.

Even against my better judgement I might be making the jump. I should make a nandroid backup. Flash the rom of choice and replace overwrite the ril files. Right?

This is great news.... Get to 5.5.893 OTA from ANY LEAK - RootzWiki

Also with any custom rom or any upgrade (if rooted) i would always reset battery in the cwr. Just my 2cents. Seems to work great in making battery life even better :)

If what Dhacker says about 901 librarys with with ICS4bionic then that is awesome news and i always believe what dhacker states!

This is awesome

Got 5.5.893 back from 5.7.893 kept root. flashed the 901 update sucessfully and kept rootdancedroid

Im really glad you guys have found a way to get back to the upgrade path. Especially if some of you have found a way to work with custom roms also.

So basically if you are shock, was never rooted, and have the 5.5.893 which came OTA, you could install 901 without problems and still be on the OTA update track?

This is me. Sorta. I too am stock and never rooted. However, I manually updated to 5.5.893. Can I manually update to 901 as well?

I wonder if we are thinking that once ICS drops, root will be gone forever? I was out of the box on 5.5.896. I grabbed 5.9.901, ran it from stock recovery and am now running 5.9.901. If doing this, then grabbing ICS when it drops means losing root forever and never bring able to rub a custom ROM. Then I'm going to flash back and get root. But of it's going to be possible to root, and eliminate bloat and run a custom ROM then I'm going to wait it out. I really want to see what this phone can do. We won't really know until we get ICS. Gingerbread is nice, but not designed for dual core phones. I'm not going to do a lot of modding that will take a lot of time for only a modest performance gain. However, if I need to do this in order to mod my phone with ICS for max performance. I'll do it. I'm just wondering what the devs, are hearing about it. I'd like to be in the best (easiest) path to running ROMs once the 'official' ICS update drops.

Could you tell me where you downloaded it from? Thx.

The link in on the first post of this thread. When you go there, use the mirror site to get it.

I downloaded it last night, but I'm still on the fence with this. I haven't had the problems others had with data drops and the whatnot, so I don't have the need that others do. Look at post#5:

Yes this 5.9.901 is officially from motorola OTA, and will be an official release eventually but is still in the testing phase. It accidentally got pushed out early when it shouldn't have. This is from an official motorola spokesperson on the motorola forums: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/64091?start=60&tstart=0

"Anyway, as you know we are always working on improving software for our devices. There is an update for the Droid Bionic in process and it was inadvertently sent early to a small number of users on Dec. 19. We're continuing to test the software and once the software completes the testing cycle, it will be distributed to all Bionic users."

There's a possibility that this update the the final version of 901, but it's also possible that they may improve upon it. If that's so, putting this update now on my phone could prevent me from getting the improved version as the carrier would see that I already have 901 (no matter which version).

You can get back from .901 to stock if need be. I took the plunge to 901 and I am one happy camper. Haven't lost 4g since install; amazing difference.

If they change anything it will have a different build number and would be forced to update us. I say this because, one they sent people the update (on purpose or in error doesn't matter) and I have written confirmation from them to install the update.

That's good to know. I'm unrooted (never was rooted). How do I do that?

Thank you for that information. That makes it more tempting.

Root will always be possible, its only a matter of time and effort from the community.

Build 901 will get root too. My guess is that it will come before the official release.

BTW, I just noticed that when you go to the link, it says download blur 5.5893. Is this correct?

Yes they number it according to the system it is intended to update.
