Bionic build 5.9.901....Initial impressions......and what we know so far

BTW, I just noticed that when you go to the link, it says download blur 5.5893. Is this correct?

Yes, the file names point to the version that needs to be on your phone for the update. You need to have version 5.5.893 already on your phone in order for it to upgrade to version 5.9.901. It's not a new ROM, it's an update. It is only going to modify certain system files and kernels. In order for the update to be successful, the update needs to see specific system files in place. This is built into the updates in an effort to not brick phones.

2 days in with 901, and the change in data connectivity is astonishing.

Totally different phone.

However, I do believe a number of the issues are Verizon/tower related. So I wonder if the effectiveness of the fix is regional to some degree, dependent on the radio software in your local area.

2 thumbs way up for 901 and Howard County MD.

Just thought I'd share this. Completely different phone.

The update doesn't work for me. The process worked perfectly, however my phone still shows 5.5.893. I dl'd the update directly from the mirror site to my phone via the browser. Using astro, I moved it from the dl folder to home (root?) folder. Went through the process which gave me the option to install file name/zip or just the file name. I first tried the file name but nothing happened. I clicked on /zip and it started the process. Upon rebooting, my version was still 5.5893. I tried looking for an update but my phone is already up to date. I then went back to astro and extracted the files from the dl, repeated the process, with the same results.

try

I had this problem. Turned out I had the 5893 and 5901 files writing on top of each other. they are named the same. Re owload 591 and rename it blur 5893901 just to be sure

You are using stock recovery to flash right? Not clockworkmod?

**For those of you that are all about the custom roms, there are working copies of Eclipse and Kinetix in the wild. If you are interested head over to Rootzwiki and check it out over there** Will continue to update as news comes available**

I did a stock recovery and installed 5.9.901 last night. What a difference! I have not lost data connectivity yet and was losing it before at least 3 times a day. It also seems that the phone itself responds quicker when using apps. I am really glad I installed it since I was getting frustrated with the loss of data. Also, when I am at home I was always on 3G but now since I installed the update I connect at times at 4G and it switches back and forth between 3G/4G flawlessly. I think since my home normally is 3G and it was trying to switch back and forth that was the reason I was losing data connectivity so often before the update.

If you are on the fence about this one go ahead and install it.

Well I bit the bullet and did the install. A scary 6 minutes, but it installed successfully.

My Bionic is not rooted, not did I root my OG Droid. On my OG Droid I installed updated apps for the Market and such, plus I did the full install for Froyo. I had never done this with the Bionic, though. Very interesting.

We'll see if it works.

I'm liking the update so far. I installed this a couple of days ago. Data is much smoother, and the phone seems more solid. I'm just hoping that when ICS comes those of us who choose not to root will not be left out in the cold, or be forced to roll all the way back to 5.5.896 root then redo the update process.

This is with 4Glte and bluetooth left on for the duration.
2-3 hours streaming music via bluetooth
3 data intensive widgets on homescreens
1 hour of voice calls
Probably about an hour total of surfing droidforums
A few texts and emails

Pretty fricking impressive considering that I wasn't trying to conserve battery at all. I can't wait to see how long this thing will run with battery saving in mind.

One thing I still can't figure out with the bionic, is how much battery the bluetooth eats up. Out of all the other android phone that I've had, the bionic is the worst in this category by far.

Speaking of Bluetooth, like the OTA update we got a couple of weeks ago I lost my BT connection with my car. It did get restored quickly, but still lost it. This time, however, my ringtone didn't go to default, but stayed my custom.
