Does your 4G ever drop for a few seconds or a couple of minutes?

Ok, I have been reading a lot of posts and noticed ICS leaks are not having this problem, and then the text today from verizon about Verizon IM not being supported with ICS. So for an experiment, I went into settings, applications, and running services and noticed IM was running. I killed that process and noticed that my signal strength is not fluctuating like before, and speeds are better and more stable. This process will start up every time you reboot your phone. Now is this just all coincidence? Maybe, but worth a try. I will see how my phone acts the rest of the night.

Interesting find, I just killed it so if it doesn't drop in the next hour or so (it's that frequent!) I'll report the success.

So that means the sim card did not work. By dropped, do you mean you weren't able to get internet or what you were doing stopped or that your data icon changed?

I did what wxman suggested by stopping the IM app. By dropped, i mean i was web browsing and pages wouldn't load. The 4G logo disappeared and the bars turned white. To fix, i toggle the 4G off then on but still have to wait a while.

I still haven't tried the process of taking out the sim card though. If that doesn't work, I'll either wait for ICS or get a new one

I did nothing and thought my problem was fixed. I was using my phone as a hotspot and did not lose data for several hours, like 5-ish. Then finally I was in a death loop of 4G blue... white... blue... white until I rebooted the phone. Happened again 15 minutes later. This is what is making it so hard to diagnose. It can work for for hours or only 10 minutes without changing anything. I'm hoping that with ICS, rooting the phone (with no stupid buggy apps) there won't be a problem even though it does appear to be for some on ICS.

Are you running any battery app, or apps like widgetlocker, a weather app, or others that run constantly in the background that are non stock? If you are, trying killing those for several hours and see what happens.

I went into settings and stopped the IM and a few other programs I wasn't using and my 4g hasn't dropped in the last 48 hours. I'm claiming success!!

I don't think it is necessarily the case. That was just one of the possibilies but not definite. It seems that the sim card is what is responsible but again it doesn't seem to be the absolute fix. Like 93lt said, verizon is messing with something that seems to have changed how our phones work (connect). These are the things I would try:

-run the moto restore reconnectivity app. Probably won't work but worth a try.
-try 94lt's fix, which seems to work for many things. Turn phone off, very carefully take out sim card, with sim card removed turn phone on, turn phone off again, carefully put sim card back in and turn phone back on. Help 94, did I get that right?
-call verizon or go to verizon so they know it is a problem and get a new sim card.
-wait until verizon fixes the problem.

Did option 2 (pulled sim card) and 4G speed is back to what it was when I originally got the phone in March, ~36 Mbps DL and ~ 17 Mbps UL...I am not sure if these speeds will hold or if the connectivity issue will return, but we will see..:)

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads poking around the site like me today..:)

I haven't tried this but just went into running apps and killed everything VZN and Mot. Even more reason to root and install ROM so I don't have to kill a half a dozen or more processes when restarting phone :) I guess I'll get a new SIM first.

I would try just killing the IM app first. That's what I did, and have not had any problems since. I wasnt getting data drops like everyone else, but I could barely keep a signal in my house. Now I get 2 to 3 bars all the time, and my DL speeds are faster. Changing sims may or may not work. These fixes are all anecdotal and no proof that in the long run they will not fail again. Since the Razr does not have this issue while the Maxx does, the only other thing I can think of is there were errors introduced in some of the coding in the 6.12.181.XT912 update (Maxx) vs the 6.12.181.XT910 (Razr) update. Only have to an error on one line in a critical part of the os to create this mess. And who knows, downloading the update could have created an error in the update depending on how stable the connection was. Whether is was through wifi or 4G. That could explain why some people have the issue, and others do not on the Maxx.
