[How-To] Force Motorola Droid 2.1 OTA Update (ESE81)

can anyone post a pic of their 2.1 weather/news widget? or if there was one already posted, could someone point me in the right direction. thanks!

Thanks :)

whats your issue?

Not being able to download from the marketplace. I noticed my gmail wasnt pulling either, so I check my account and sync area and my google account was syncing properly which likely account for my inability to download apps. I factory wiped, tried it and tested the downloading, which now works, but i'm still in the process of restoring settings and application uing MyBackupPro. I'll then test again and see what happens. Good times...:icon_rolleyes:

OK, after the factory reset, and restoration of apps and settings with MyBackupPro, and manually changing some apps back to the way I had them, I can confirm that doing a factory reset did fix my issue with not being able to download from the marketplace and not being able to sync with my google account. I'm finally up and running 100% with 2.1 update1:icon_ banana:

Good to hear man! Thanks for your help/support. :]

I have a quick question... do I have to remove the UPDATE.ZIP folder once everything's done or do I leave it alone?

Thanks in advance!:blackdroid:

Worked for me. Thanks for the update. I hate waiting for stuff like this. It seems Im always in the very last group to get any OTA updates.

When I had my very first Sidekick, the monochrome model, I was one of the lucky people to get the first OTA update, and unfortunately it bricked my Sidekick :)

factory reset made a huge difference

I installed the first update zip it had an error at the end of the install but booted up and was 2.1 but was o.o1p downloaded a different update.zip and no error and now on radio .03p like it should be.
First install was slow, decided to set factory default it came up 2.1 .o3p just like when i bought it had to sign in and setup google voice again but download most of the apps i had and some i didnt still fast as heck even with live wallpaper and helix 7 screens not much set up on the screens yet will have to see if it slows down when full but i never remember the phone being this fast.
A few have reported slower speed test with new .03p but i ran speedtest before i updated and after and got slightly faster download speeds and slightly slower upload speeds not much of a difference.

Is it true that when they try to push the update to those of us that already updated manualy our phones will explode?

oh and im not finding the flash update oh never mind i think weve run that one to death :)

How come when I goto gallery now it says, application is not installed on your phone?

Your desktop icon is probably still pointing to the old Gallery. Delete it and then re-add it and all should be okay.

Is it me, or are people forcing the update having issues verses using the OTA?
I updated my phone and my wifes phone and I can say I haven't had any issues that a battery pull after the update didn't cure

Delete the .zip from the filename. It's already a compressed folder, so it won't need the extension added.

Has anyone else on their firmware version get 2.1update-1

I do that and I get
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)

Your problem is you probably downloaded the file on a MAC via the Safari browser. The Safari browser will unpack/extract the files. You do not want this. Instead, download the file using Foxfire (if you are using a MAC or Explorer if you are using Windows).

Rename the file "update.zip" and copy to the SD card.

Follow the instructions in the first post of this thread. Enjoy 2.1 on your Droid.

gggrrrrrr im very tempted by this FORCE update but i been reading all posts and it looks like some ppl are having trouble with it...i think im just gonna wait for the update to be pushed to my phone

I am not a "computer person" at all, but I was able to do it on both of our DROIDS.

Just follow the instructions in the first post and you really shouldn't have an issue.

Here are some things that I messed up on my first attempt:

I downloaded the zip file to my PC, then dragged it on to the DROID, but instead of putting it right on the SD card, I put it in a file called "downloads" so it didn't work. Once I just dragged the file to the SD card, no problem.

When you have to push the "volume up" key and the "camera" key, push the "volume up" key first, and hold it, then push the camera button halfway down. It works easier that way!!

Other than those two little glitches, it went quite smoothly...and the voice to text button is worth the download itself!!! The live wallpapers are cool, but more of a bonus!

Good luck!

Scott

that is weird. mine says the same and it used to say droid. any ideas?

here's something weird that happened to me. install was perfect. phone is great. only difference is, before when i went to facebook. my facebook is touch.facebook.com, at the bottom it always said, Download facebook for your android. now it says download facebook for your hero. any reason why facebook now thinks my droid is a hero?
