[How-To] Force Motorola Droid 2.1 OTA Update (ESE81)

Ok i successfully updated to 2.1 but i have one prob. When i click on gallery app is says the apps is not installed...did I do something wrong? Thanld for the updated pinch zoom works fine but im unable to use live wallpapers id really apreciate the help. I tried dloading and apk for the new gallery but i still cant click the install button to activate a live wall once dloaded..thnx again
Just drag the one you have on your screen into the trash and bring up the one in your app drawer. It should work.

Actually i just held down my finger on a blank space of the homescreen and it brought up the menu...seems to work now. Lol thanks.... btw Do theses drain the battery a lot faster?

Hey Everyone, I did the force update and it was successful. I have a quick question i have to return this phone due to a loose screen. Do I need to revert back to the stock OS on the Droid or am I good leaving this one on there. Will they know that I put the software on the phone or would they assume I got the update?

Don't worry this is an official update. Just make sure you delete the update.zip from the sd card.

I was talking about your gallery. Did you get that to work yet? I only used the live wallpapers for a little bit so I can't really comment on the battery but I would think it would drain it a little faster.

i have the 2.1 launcher and gallery already installed, should i uninstall these before upgrading?

Either delete them or clear them as the default program.

The gallery I would just delete, because you'll have that one stock now with 2.1. For the launcher though, at the very minimum I would clear it as the default launcher. Since it was a port from 2.1 to work on 2.0 there might be some conflicts now.

works like a charm

Force update to 2.1 and installed Helix. Now enjoying Live Wallpapers, have 5 screens for now(instead of the 7 available). 10 minutes and I was done ! :icon_ banana::icon_ banana:
Thanks to this forum, I could not wait :) A geek in my own mind, I wanted the most current stuff. Phone less than a month old and already more awesome.

manual? who said anything about a manual? I have Droidforums !:greendroid:

hmmmm Okay!!!! So what did 2.1 give us??? Can you provide a list, I forced the update and see that it says 2.1, I see no difference...guess I do not use the same apps and I do not care about live wallpapers. So anything useful given to us?

update features for you

Just a cut/paste from source:

With Android 2.1, Motorola Droid users will get multitouch pinch-to-zoom capabilities (using the built-in browser), the Gallery feature (for viewing images), and a Google Maps app. The Gallery app also brings the 3D layout found on the Nexus One, and -- surprise, surprise -- live wallpapers, which were previously missing from the upgrade reports.
Also on the Android 2.1 feature list for the Droid are new Weather and News applications and widgets, and support for voice-to-text entry from within the virtual keyboard (by tapping the microphone icon).
Android 2.1 on the Motorola Droid you will also bring better handset audio when disconnecting a wired headset, an "improved" pattern-lock functionality and automatic night-mode switch in Google Maps.

I agree. Free bump for this thread. This 2.1 push worked flawlessly for me.
I couldn't find a way to paste in astro so I just used my USB to rename the .zip file to update
after that I followed the directions on page one.
Works great now.

Yea my gallery seems to work again, although I dont know what that gallery icon was that I immediately had after the update. It had the green android bot dude(lol) and I tried clicking it and it says it wasnt installed. I recovered the old picture frame icon and it seems to work fine, 3d tilt and all. Btw this is off topic but why the hell does my droid save a pic of every app i downloaded? Like id have 100s of pics of icons upon icons..even the icons within my picsay pro app. Its not a big deal its just a bit annoying. It was like this also when i had 2.0.1

Oh yeah!!!!

Just forced my Droid to 2.1... The process was flawless. I was kinda scared that I would brick it, but, I guess some of the "Droid Does" transferred to me so that "I Does". :D

I took a look t the gallery just because I was curious due to the previous few posts... Man, I gotta tell ya. I'm really diggin this new gallery. Especially since it shows all of the pics as per the date the pics were taken.

So, thanks to the OP for posting this, and to the people that took the time out of their lives to figure this out for those of us "impatient" people.

Thanks,
Josh

did the update by following the great directions on here... one question tho what files should be deleted after its up and running... should the original file be deleted the renamed file or both ??? any help would be appreciated thanks....

Works great! Thanks for the post. The only thing I've noticed is that a couple of my programs have double entries. Not sure how this happened, but no big deal. Again, thanks! :motdroidhoriz:

so it doesn't look like they addressed the data connection problem with wifi

but on the bright side, voice to text is working pretty well ...

Love this forum! Just did the update, and it was simple as advertised.

Only thing that sucks is Sweeter Home 2 doesnt work with live wallpapers, so had to switch back to GDE.

I did the manual update. Everything was very easy to do and I did it all without even plugging my phone into the computer. The live wall papers def slow down the app menu. The browser multitouch zooms smooth. However, the new gallery is much better although all of my pictures AND videos are just under camera. I cannot seem to find a way to have them in a separate folder. With the old layout they were separated and I liked that better. Does anyone know of a way to do this.
Also in the browser when pinch and zooming in the text does not automatically wrap to fit. I have to zoom then double tap to get the text to wrap. When and pinch and zoom outward the text DOES auto wrap to fit the screen. Kind of strange huh? Does anyone else experience these problems??

Other than that everything else seems fine to me. The new music player layout is a little bit better too.

I also cannot find Google Earth in the market. Any word on this?

And another note...Does the navigation automatically switch to night mode at night depending on the time?
