[HOW TO] Install the leaked Android 4.0.4 ICS build on the Droid 4 (XT894)

Okay...

Ppl who are on GingerBread(6.13.219) or (6.13.215) and have rooted there phone.

Sceneiro 1- your might have a full stock rom(Gingerbread) and did not do any modifications to build.prop or anything else. Just froze apps thru TI Backup..

Scenario 2- you might have installed Safestrap v1.09 and flashed a custom GB rom...

Either scenarios your best bet is to DOWNLOAD RSDLite and download the GB(6.13.219) FastBoot file. This can be found in the OP(Original Post) if u don't kno how to RsdLite(your SOL...lol jk) there's a step by step instructions in the OP to.
..this process is to insure you u have a squeaky clean stock rom..

From this point u can choose to root your phone, and to retain root thru the ICS update you can install OTA root keeper, and again there is a step by step instructions in the OP...

Now download the ICS leak and place it on ur SDCard, power down the phone. Once the phone is powered down, press the power button+both volume buttons to get u into stock recovery. From there u can do a factory reset, and wipe cache. Once both are completed, u can select "Install from sDCardsDCard" and install the leak..

If you noticed, safestrap wasn't used in the process...

Well, after all that, flashing and updating, i finally got ICS on my phone and im so happy i did it cuz it is amazing! The only thing im missing out is the ability to add homescreens but that dont matter cuz i dont need all that anyways. :) ics is amazing, crispy, beautiful, and well put together n Moto did a real good job on it :D thank you all..

I followed the directions in the first thread to update to the ics leak.

On reboot, my phone will not get beyond the Red Motorola screen.

Any ideas?

I cant seem to turn the phone off either.

The first boot after the update is a long one, like two or three minutes. If you waited that long then you could force a power down and then flash the update again.

Thanks for the reply.Ihad let that go for about ten min and nothing was happening.Ire extracted and copied the update file to my sd card. After updating again, everything worked out. I was worried for a bit because there seems to be no way to turn this phone off.

For future reference, holding the power button and volume down button at the same time forces the phone to turn off.

So i updated to this build like a week ago. What happens when motorola rolls out the official update? Will there be a download for that as well? Will i be able to download that thru this website?(i already know i have been taken off the official upgrade path) will sumone have the entire ics update package to post on here incase we want sum extra stuff we didnt get in the latest leaked build? I just wanna know cuz ik theres things missing in the leaked 4.0.4 build...

I haven't noticed anything missing from 213, which leak are you on?

Regarding your question, most likely we will be able to get the ICS OTA using the Unstick method (tricking the update into thinking you're on GB219 which would allow the ICS update). Moreover, the leak (if up to Moto and Big Red's standards) becomes the official then there is nothing to do. So let's say you're on 213 and that becomes the official ICS update then you're already on it. If you're on 208 then you can use the Unstick method to jump to 213 which would be the official.

For the Razr, leak 211 became the official OTA, so those already running it didn't have to do anything.

.213 won't be official version since leaks .214 and now .215 have popped up for the Droid 4. Unfortunately no one seems to still be stock to grab the leaks via cheesecake.

If/once someone gets the leak, someone will have to patch the kernel so earlier leak users can upgrade.

i am on the 212 ics build and i wanna go to 215 and the method that is on xda is very confusing.... couldnt i just copy and paste the 215 to my external sd card and update from recovery? or would that cause a brick on my phone? what is the point of reflashing the GB fastboot files? hellpppp what do i do?

You can't just update from one leak to another because the update looks to see if you are on stock GB .219. It wouldn't brick your phone to try. It would just fail. That is why the fastboot of the. 219 files is necessary. It tricks the update into thinking you are still on .219.

Here's how OTA's work.

They are not ROMs, they are only patches to ROM (files) already on your phone. They are designed to patch 6.13.219 files and bring them up to 6.16.215 (current leak).

If you are on leak .213 (6.16.213) when it tries to patch the files it fails....because you don't have the original versions to patch that the OTA update is looking for.

You have to use the method to move from one leak version to the next leak version. You will have to do the same when the official OTA is released as well.
