Ics soak test has begun!!!!!!!!

You've got things wrong that cause the update to throw the error 7. Rather than screw around with it trying to figure out what you changed and how to change it back, the House of Bionic will fix it all for you and allow you to install the update. Just read my OP and my FAQ and follow directions. I can't make it any easier than it is. Alternatively you could use the 905 FXZ and go that route but that's rather destructive as it wipes your data.

OK so basically I want to install all the HoB stuff, install the 246 installer, and run the program? And I should leave the update.zip for 246 from Camo on my sdcard? This will not do a factory or data reset unless I specifically tell it to, correct?

Sorry, been awhile since I paid attention to this stuff - not since my D1 days.

So if I download this to my phone. Do I just unzip it and run it and it will update me to ICS? I have never rooted or anything so I assume it would work just fine.

Download to phone move to ext sd. Power off phone hold hold vol buttons and turn power on. Vol down to recovery wait til broken android logo. Hit both vol buttons. Select update from zip, vol down to it hit Powe button

If all you're doing is installing the update zip file, and you're on unrooted .905, here are some steps. It's what Crazebeat said, but expanded for all the steps. If you connected your Bionic to your computer before, steps 1-3 should be pretty familiar to you.

Don't worry that the name of the file is 5.9.905. Motorola gives the name of where is coming from, not where it's going to. Be sure you have the Motorola drivers installed from USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA on your PC. These may install automatically when you connect your Bionic to your PC.

1. On the phone go to Menu>Setting>Applications>Development and check "USB Debugging."
2. Plug phone into computer.
3. Press "Mass USB Storage" from the list of choices. Two drives will show up. One is MOT (Internal Storage) and the other is Removable Drive (SD-EXT).
4. Put the downloaded file in the root (ie main area) of SD-EXT (not Internal Storage). No need to change the name or extract it.
5. Eject both MOT and Removable Drive and disconnect the phone from your computer.
6. Power phone down
7. Reboot into stock recovery (aka reboot recovery) by holding Power and Volume Up/Down at the same time.
8. Select "Recovery" by pressing Volume Down, then press Volume Up to initiate it.
9. When the robot appears, press both Volume keys in at the same time.
10. Select “apply update from sdcard” using the volume keys, then Power to initiate it.
11. Using the Volume keys, choose the file that you downloaded (above), press Power and let it load.
12. When the install is done, press Power. It'll reboot, but it'll be longer than normal (about 6 minutes)
13. Wipe your cache by doing steps 7-9 again, but select the "Wipe Cache Partition" on step 10.
14. When the cache reformat is done, press "Power" to reboot phone.

The whole process, from moving the file into the SD-EXT card to phone rebooted is at least 10 minutes. Of that, 1 minute to move the file and start the update, 3 minutes will be the phone extracting the files (Step 11) and the rest for the install itself (Step 12). A long time to stare at your phone, I admit.

So is Razors Edge still the way to go to root this sucker?

Yes. It's what I use in the House of Bionic.

Right, just follow the instructions in the HoB OP and you'll be good to go. You can skip the transfer step if you want since you already have it on your sdcard-ext, but I wouldn't skip the check hash step just to verify it transferred successfully. And leave the update on there going forward in case you have to use the REINSTALL option. That's like a mini-fxz that allows you to fix your phone from any brick state and reapply the update. The HoB is very useful. ;)

Please make sure to have them do a cache wipe after the update applies but before they reboot. It will prevent issues.

This is an unrooted device though. I am guessing Motorola has these options in their own recovery? I've rooted and messed with roms a ton (OG Droid/Nook Color), but only on devices that are root friendly and won't brick my phone. These steps sound like if you're rooted, but again I've never messed around with a non-rooted phone before so maybe this is the correct process.

I just want to double/triple check. :)

Thanks for your help!

Root has nothing at all to do with stock updates. The cache wipe option is in the same stock recovery you'll use to apply the update.

So how is the soak test going? Has anyone had a less than satisfactory experience so far?

I'm on GB still and not on the soak list. I'm hoping this is going as perfect as possible so I can expect the OTA soon!!
