New Motorola Droid Update Available

For the people who have the update on their phones and have them rooted again, does it play nice with the custom kernels that you guys are using?

Nobody has verified it actually broke root on the D-1 yet.

Any OTA update will break your root access for your phone that has been rooted. I was asking, for the ones that have updated their phones and rooted them again, that if they were using their custom kernels again is it working properly?

I used Metickone's rooted version of the OTA update. I rebooted and immediately grabbed Pete's standard voltage 1000 OC kernel and applied it. Rebooted again and that is all it took. OC Kernel works just like it did before. No changes. All my SetCPU settings and profiles were still there.

I've searched through several threads about rooting and the new Droid update and as I am such a newbie at all of this I don't now what to do. I rooted my Droid (Motorola Droid, os 2.2) last week because not only did I need to tether (usb) but I also liked the idea of more control through available ROMs. I'm a graphic designer and usually don't have trouble learning new technology fairly quickly, but I haven't had the time to research ROMs and other ways to customize my rooted droid beyond adding a few of the apps recommended by more experienced users on this site.

I'm getting constant system update notifications but don't want to risk unrooting unless I know exactly how to re-root after the update. I don't care if I loose the few programs I installed since the root (Watchdog, PdaNet, WaveSecure, Setcpu, Titanium, Autokiller, and Netcounter) because I figure I an just reinstall after rerooting.

Can anyone tell me - or point me to the thread/post that describes in simple terms - how to re-root my Droid following the latest update? Thanks in advanced and my apologies if I failed to find the right thread to obtain this info.

Thanks!

What recovery are you using? How did you root the phone?

If you use SPRecovery then I can say that Metickone has a rooted version of the OTA posted in his section of the hacker's forums and it installs wiothout breaking root. You will have to reapply any themes, roms or kernels you installed becasue when you apply his update.zip you will have Motorola's stock rom and their stock kernel that allows Overclocking to 800.

Now...if you have SPRecopvery and all you want to do is avoid the constant Vz nagging about the update, let it try to install. SPRecovery will block it. You will still have 2.2 and it won't ask you to update again.

Oh...and if you use a different recovery, do not follow my advice. I only know SPRecovery and I don't use one button root options. I do everything the hard way.

Yikes! I spoke too soon, I figured I'd have SPRecovery downloaded and install before my next reply but I can't find it in Market. Where do I get it?

Let's find out what you have and then work from there. Follow Bosteros instructions. Open the keyboard, hold down the X key and while holding it press and hold the power button. Once you see the M logo you can release the power button but continue holding the X untill you either see a triangle with an exclamation point or a greenish, yellowish ninja droid with a list of options. I don't recall what Clockwork recovery looks like...I used it once back in March and removed it 10 minutes later. But if you don't have the two I described, that would probably be clockwork.

So do this and tell us what you see after the M logo goes away.

I can verify this.

I rooted with Soup or Root but kept the standard recovery (No custom roms or kernals) and I was able to apply the update manually but my root was broken after the update. I tried Z4Root and Soup or Root to re-root but both failed. Ended up using Super One Click Root to get root permissions running properly again.[/QUOTE]
Not what I wanted to hear...:(

Hi, need a bit of advice before I start from scratch. I had my D1 rooted. I was having some issues and VZW was going to replace my phone, so I unrooted. I ended up keeping the phone, and still have ROM Manager installed and showing the SU Ninja in my apps (however when I select it, it just goes to a black screen). Also can't boot into anything except stock Android recovery. Where should I start? Thanks

I keep hearing about an OTA update and reading on the interwebs about needing to have 2.3.15 before trying to download the "early update" how does one go about getting the 2.3.15 build?

Uninstall ROM Manager, reinstall; it and try again. Or search for a thread titled something to the effect of "Root any droid, regardless of version" or something like that. There are links to it in this thread. If you follw that guide you will be manually rooted in less than 30 minutes. But follow each step precisely. Anyone I have seen that had a problem, skipped a step or typed something wrong.

Curious, tried to manually install from about phone and nothing.

I was surprised when I saw the update announcement on my phone tonight. Never saw a post here that it was happening.

Yeah, I see that the first post was on the 6th, but I must've missed it when it came up. I need to log in more.
